"Wii U will have in-game chat functionality for select games, including, but not limited to, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin’s Creed III and Mass Effect 3. This feature will be supported by licensed stereo headsets that plug directly into the headphone port of the Game Pad. Licensed headsets are available from Turtle Beach and TRITTON." - NoA statement
A reconfirmation of what we heard earlier today. It's still a bit puzzling. Nintendo seems to make real strides in some areas of online, but in others, they make odd decisions.

The scenario you described may still be possible through video chat and text messages in Miiverse. We know some of it is for sure. It may end up being less convenient (although we still don't know the specifics) but it's likely sending messages while you are playing a game is as easy as sending a text on your phone. Nintendo will probably include premade messages to quickly communicate such as "Want to play a game?" and you can respond "In a minute".
Comparing how much I text people over talking on the phone nowadays, I could see this being the preferred method of communicating especially while in the middle of a game. Why have a whole conversation when you can get right to the point in a few words?
It still comes down to how Nintendo executes it all, but the lack of cross-game audio doesn't mean a different solution for a similar function won't be available.
The phone is made for everyone as is Wii U.
You buy a Wii U to play games like Mario and Pikmin.
You buy a PS3 for a media center that plays Blu-ray!
You buy a 360 to play games with gamers online and offline.
Obviously you should be playing 360 instead of wanting a Wii U.
How do you know this was the reasoning for this decision?
There is voice chat in games that it is added to. There is Miiverse where you can probably communicate in plazas with people who are not on your friends list. Video chat has been shown in two separate trailers for both E3's and in the Gamepad Iwata Asks they talk about how important it eventually became to have 30fps video streams and how hard they worked on making it a reality. It's highly unlikely it's been scrapped.
On the 3DS, Swapnote doesn't require anything more than having the person on your friend list and in that you can send pictures, not just that you draw but also ones you take with your camera.
Nintendo isn't as risk adverse about the internet as the once were with the Wii and as much as you assume they still are now.
Edit: Reggie even mentioned video chat at the September Media conference. It's definitely still in.

Wow.
It's true and you cannot deny it.
You've gone from saying that you would rather talk to people on the phone while playing with them on the Wii U, to saying that the Wii U isn't even for online gaming.
I'm saying if you want the full online experience, you get an Xbox 360.
If you want to play Nintendo games, you get a Nintendo system.
If you want multimedia experience you get a PS3.
I'm not saying Wii U can't be used for online gaming, I'm saying you shouldn't expect to have the full online experience on a non Xbox system.
So Nintendo's deals with Netflix, Youtube, Hulu & it's TVii service is it just pretending to be a multimedia device, okay, just checking.
And your insistence that only the mighty Microsoft can provide something mystical like cross game chat is just wrong, sorry.
I wouldn't use Swapnote as an example of good online features from Nintendo. Swapnote is pretty annoying to use. It takes sooooo long to get your messages and go through them all. I know this because this one dude on my friends list sent me Swapnotes all the time, and trying to delete them all was a pain. And for some reason, I couldn't actually send notes to the people I wanted to. It was super slow and unintuitive.
If this is any indication on Nintendo's revamped, "robust" online experience, we know that its gonna be absolute SHlT. Nintendo claims that they are building their online system around the idea of social interaction but they leave THIS OUT? Do they even slightly understand what social interaction is??? I'm really excited to see the Miiverse now, if we're lucky it'll be as sophisticated as a comment board on a college student's blog page. Seriously. Awful. Nintendo lets us down again.
No, it just giving you some multimedia services.
If you want full multimeda experience you buy a PS3.
How hard is that to understand?
@Seroth
I have no problems using Swapnote, it works quite well for me.
A "full" multimedia experience, because of bluray? Bluray is on the way out, the future/present is streaming media. That's not the discussion here so let's not even get into that.
The discussion here has been beaten to death by both sides to the point of exhaustion, especially by the Xbots/PC gamers.
Due to extremely high prices for decent internet speeds and ISPs capping our internet to 150GBs-250GBs depending on where you live, no one is going to be ditching physical media for their games, movies and software.
PS3 has nearly every codec known to man installed on it
The PSN store has every media company on board
The system even lets you play store and play movies you ripped on your PC.
I wasn't using it as an example of a good feature. He was talking about how Nintendo is unwilling to loosen up the reigns on their internet features because he thinks they have to be overprotective of people regarding the internet.
I agree as far as what you are referring to. Swapnote could have been much better if it was integrated in the OS but I don't think Nintendo realized how much people would want to use it which is probably why it was developed as an app. Miiverse seems to be taking what they learned from Swapnote to the next level.
I said streaming media, ie movies, not games or software. I've never run into problems going over data limits either. Yes the PS3 has codecs, stores etc, so does my PC which is hooked up to my TV. Again this isn't the debate here.
@Chris_the_wings
There never was a debate in this thread, but mere XBL users and PC gamers going off the deep end like they always do.
There maybe be a few fair weather fans in the bunch.
This is the last two cents I'm going to put in here. You people are all rediculous. You act like Nintendo won't allow any voice chat at all. It's not the end of the freaking world! The lack of one MINOR feature that is only available on one other device is NOT a reason to whine and cry! Heck, they may even add it in later. Stop whining, and stop claiming that the Wii U is ruined over something so trivial. If you don't like it, don't freaking buy it!
I asked the other about compatibility with the Wii PDP Headbanger Headset (USB headset that came with CoD Black Ops) and the rep told me that is up to the developer so...
This isn't that disappointing, the response from both sides kind of is though. You know cross chat is something I can live without (although on a system that's all about social interaction, boasting a whole darn gig of ram for the OS alone, it is a bit puzzling) but I don't see why the resources already available on the controller can't be used for voice chat - I mean the thing has a mic on it to begin with, and while I could see button noise and background noise being an issue, it would have been nice to have voice chat capability as basically a standard. Even if you're not big on online gameplay, I feel like co-op games are definitely in demand as of late and without a moc co-op matchmaking blows period. Anyways I definitely do not understand how some of you could be acting like an out-of-box chat solution w/cross chat features would be a bad thing or too much to expect out of a Nintendo console. I totally respect that Nintendo is making steps towards where their online component ought to be, and since this isn't Microsoft we're talking about I can live with not having super duper online for a while. But don't let Nintendo think they can become complacent just because you can come up with excuses and act like Nintendo hasn't made the Wii U out to be something that all audiences including core gamers could get behind
All I'm going to say about that is you can't predict what Nintendo is going to do. I'm not assuming anything. Once the WiiU is out I'll be looking at as much hands on and chat about features and how everything works before I even consider buying it at release. There's no bad blood, but I see no point in buying it when it doesn't have enough games that meet my tastes to justify picking it up just yet.
And if anyone cares I recently found out that the turtle beach Z11 (for PC) works completely for the 3DS, not that there's a game with chat yet? But its a nice find I think.
I don't see why this got such a negative reception. Isn't in-game chat functionality uh... a good thing? I mean according to what I read, the problem with people here is that you guys are expecting to keep talking whether the game has functionality or not... well for starters, I don't think that's very difficult to do. Nintendo can send upgrades to the OS that can let that happen.
Secondly, there's Wii U Chat with webcam functionality which, as the game is suspended, you can easily communicate with people and resume where you left of. Now sure, I'm down to having the Wii U continue my audio communications as I play games or use other apps, but as a solo gamer mainly, I don't think I'll be using that all too much...
I don't care for voice chat…
This is just stupid! And what is Nintendo's anal obsession with plugging stuff into the controller. I thought when everyone made fun of them for tethering the wii classic controller to the wiimote brick that it was clear?!
Nintendo does NOT get the Call of Duty community, or online gamers at all! The wii u is becoming an over priced current gen system with all the things real gamers care about, taken away. it's turning into an over priced board game, with games that kinda look like the big boy games on 360 but arent exactly! Nintendo is the only company who wants you to play together, but won't let you do it correctly online! They want people sitting on each others laps...what is this, going to see Santa at Macy's, telling him how you want a Red Rider BB Gun for Christmas?! It's almost 2013 folks, it's high time Nintendo figured it out! These antiquated systems are getting old and obnoxious!
$350 for less than I can do right now on the PS3 or 360!?
Whoever is designing Nintendo systems needs to be fire ASAP! Between 3DS not having a 2nd circle pad, to pluging crap into the gamepad...it's borderline retarded! There is simply no nice way to say that! NONE! At All!
How can Nintendo bring out "new" systems that have less than current ones?! You want to know why 3DS failed at first, because a year before its release the DSi XL came out. It had a better, clearer camera, the eshop (or whatever it's called on there), and a web browser. When the 3DS came out, it had NONE of that! Whoever in Japan is making the choices here (and we know who it is), has lost his friggin mind! You DON'T tether ANYTHING to a brick in 2012/2013 you just don't!!
Sure, many of you have been conditioned to not want or been told you dont need, such things and you don't care, but think logically for a moment, you're trying to play a game and something is plugged into a brick...of course I'm talking logically to folks who loved FF:CC on GameCube and thought the mess of cords was simply part of the gameplay.
Dude, chill, lol. If your problem really is the headset plugging into the controller then I'm pretty sure some 3rd party accessory maker will take care of it. Honestly, wired communications can most of the time be faster/clearer than wireless so that may be quite a plus for some. And the GamePad's RIGHT in front of you so it's not like the headset's cable will get in your way... i mean unless you wave the GamePad around like a retard......
That said, this is not even the problem (which you blew unnecessarily out of proportion). Everybody here is more concerned with being able to continue chatting through the Wii U regardless of switching games, like a phone of sorts, and I agree with them too. But I really don't see how a little cable that probably runs down your chest and directly into the controller (completely out of the way of your hands given the width of the controller) should be the big deal that you're making it out to be...
...i just hope i can use usb headsets..
