Ancel says Wii U 'surprisingly powerful', Rayman Legends has new lighting engine

“What surprises me with Wii U is that we don’t have many technical problems. It’s really running very well, in fact. We’re not obliged to constantly optimize things. Even on the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions [of Origins], we had some fill-rate issues and things like that. So it’s partly us – we improved the engine – but I think the console is quite powerful. Surprisingly powerful. And there’ a lot of memory. You can really have huge textures, and it’s crazy because sometimes the graphic artist – we built our textures in very high-dentition. They could be used in a movie. Then we compress them, but sometimes they forget to do the compression and it still works! [Laughs] So yeah, it’s quite powerful. It’s hard sometimes when you’re one of the first developers because it’s up to you to come up with solutions to certain problems. But the core elements of the console are surprisingly powerful.

“And because we’re developing for Wii U, we don’t have to worry about cross-platform optimization. We can push what the console can do; push it to its limits. And of course, we have a new lighting engine. In fact, the game engine for Origins was mostly just classic sprites in HD, but now we can light them and add shadows and all these things. So there is some technical innovation with the engine itself." - Michel Ancel

There's no doubt about it, Rayman Legends is a gorgeous game. Just because it's 2D doesn't mean it's not asking for a lot of power to perform. Glad to know the Wii U can stand the heat!

It's quite nice to hear dev saying such good things about the Wii U compared to all these anonymous sources...

@cool_boy_mew

Ppsshh! Actual developers lie. Anonymous sources are right all the time! Wii U is just a Wii and an iPad duct-taped together XP

Yeah, and it doesn't even have multi touch... Crap system... And only kiddie games. Don't forget. Bayonetta will look like Princess Peach! And throw flowers and stuff at teddy bears.... Bring it on fanboys! :D

We all know it's better than the 360 and PS3 in terms of specs. Seriously... And Rayman does actually look good ;)

I wonder if the GPU and CPU is a fit for Beyond Good and Evil 2. Ancel has said in the past that the current generation might not work for BG2, I wonder if that was because of the CPU's or GPU's of the current gen? Other developers have said that the Wii U's GPU is a nice step up from the current gen, so if that's where the hesitation was with the PS360 then the game may happen on Wii U. If it's that the CPU's of current gen aren't up to the task then Wii U might be out of luck.

chris_the_wing :

Well I would really hope so.... He is praising the tech somewhat obviously. But he really wants to make the sequell very massive. RAM is of course a very important issue also. But that he already said there is a lot of. Maybe we'll find out something next year.

There are questions that need to be asked:

1) is there a market for said game these days?
2) how much more does it cost to support Wii U?
3) is he being paid by Nintendo to talk up the Wii U specs?

1: Yes, I think so. And with good advertisement new gamers could join in on the Beyond univers.

2: Well it's not coming to the PS360 since they are too weak! So why not start making it the U with the better specs (if they are good enough). And on top of that Ancel wants this to be a HUGE project with a giganti world (the reason it's not coming on the PS360)..So Yes.
3: LOL. Don't think so from his past comments. He has a good track reckord!

Get the system come December, or the game? I ask this because the game has been delayed in case you hadn't already heard. I love my 2D platformers so this is one of my must have games. Sad it was delayed, but it gives them even more time to polish it and it doesn't have to compete directly with Mario.

1) Probably a better market now then there was last gen. It flopped then but has since become a cult classic.
