I'd always figured ToeJam was called that because he (presumably) had so many toes, given his three legs, and the 'jam' part was in the musical sense. As for Earl? I'd just assumed he had a comparatively mundane name for humorous contrast.
Honestly, I think the slip-up was for the best.
