Liberation Maiden - review

A portion of a Siliconera review...

What makes Liberation Maiden ultimately work, though, is that it’s something different. The Nintendo eShop has some fantastic platformers and puzzle games to buy, but it’s currently lacking in other genres, which gives Liberation Maiden a place of its own and made me appreciate it all the more.

I bought this game mainly to support SUA51 since I LOVE No more heroes 1. However, it just isn't worth the 8 bucks. Yes, this genre is underrepresented on the eshop, but that doesn't make this an instant buy. I finished the game in under two hours. I didn't get all the achievements, but I really don't care about achievements.

What I liked:
-Voice Acting
-Japanese soundtrack
-two nice cutscenes
-fun for a bit

What I didn't like:
-Incredibly short even for an eight dollar game. This game can be finished in an hour and a half. In comparison pushmo lasted me nine hours, might switch force: 5 hours plus, sakura samurai: six-seven hours, mutant mudds: six hours. Liberation Maiden is just incredibly short.
-The 3d effect sucks. First of all, the cut scene are converted into 3d and they look awful. It seems like they took a 2d made cutscene and then thrown some poor 3d in there. This is best explained with the 3ds photo application; There is an option in the 3ds photo app to allow you to push things up from the photo to make it appear 3d. It doesn't look natural but its just fun to do. This is how cut scenes look like but it's just poorly done. It hurts your eyes and its best to turn it off. The 3d in game isn't terrible but its not good either. It barely has depth and it really just looks like it wasn't made with 3d in mind. (Yes, I still care about 3D in my 3ds games!)
-Gameplay got repetitive--which is contradicting to my complaint of this game being too short. I'm glad it got over quickly since the gameplay is getting stale, but this game only lasted for under two hours and I already got tired of it just shows how much I don't like the game. The game ends in a cliffhanger when it could have just gave us ONE MORE STAGE to wrap up the story. But they just threw a villain at you and ended the game.

The score it got on Metacritic and the reasons why it got that score is justified in my opinion.
