GameStop Wii U midnight release uncertain

Is it fanboy whining if I say that I believe GameStop gives Nintendo fans the shaft when it comes to midnight launches? It certainly feels that way. Case in point, we're hearing from multiple people that a Wii U midnight launch is looking unlikely. There's no official word on the situation yet, but it doesn't seem too plausible. Most stores would have word on an opening like this by now. Thanks to ianlotts for the heads up!

It depends on the store mangers, the Wii U releases on November 18th at 12:01AM when it hits that then people could buy it.

I don't really have any interest in midnight launches (although if I had my friends over I wouldn't mind) but the fact that they're probably not going to do one is ridiculous, seeing as the darn thing has maxed our pre-orders everywhere.

I wouldn't say it's because it's Nintendo. There are a lot of stores that aren't doing midnight launches, including the Best Buy I have my preorder at. I guess they were hoping to do it, but the higher ups said no. Can't blame them, having to get people to work at a midnight launch has got to be awful.

When you think about it: it's the Sunday before Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I've heard stores aren't even doing midnight launches on Black Friday this year because it just isn't profitable for anyone.

I heard its because its a sunday launch. Corporate doesn't have a plan ever set for sunday releases. Plus given that a lot of stores are inside malls, which have regulations in regards to staying open/power consumption.

My local Gamestop told me yesterday that a mid-night launch was a no go, but they would open early. Kinda strange since they had one when the Wii came out.

Was there a midnight launch for Wii? I remember getting up early and getting mine at Circuit city when it was still around. But it only opened early. The only midnight release I did was for Brawl.

The one I have mine preordered at did a midnight release for the Wii and the 3DS. It would seem a bit silly to not due one for the Wii U.

Oh no, we'll all have to wait an extra 10-11 hours to get the console!

I think for those of us who have waited a good two years or more for it, an extra couple hours is no big deal.

Meh, I can wait a few hours. I have a pre-order so it's not like it's going anywhere.

Isn't this really up to Nintendo?

While i'd love to be able to be able to get the system at midnight, I won't be terribly bothered if they don't have a midnight release. I'd have to go right after work, which honestly I doubt i'd want to do anyway.

Wii U preorders sell out within 2 days of September 13th conference.

Gamestop: Should we have a midnight launch? Nah.

Me: (Speechless)

I wouldn't say it's fanboy whining at all. Fact is gamestop doesn't seem to like or promote Nintendo like it does its competitors. Now this could be partly Nintendo's fault as well, as I've heard they can be kinda weird with retailers and promotion. I used to work in a local game store similar to gamestop and I asked my manager in charge of this sort of thing why we didn't get a lot of promo materials from Nintendo. This was years ago, but apparently at that time Nintendo was just too expensive for us to work with from the sounds of it. Then again screw gamestop! :)

it's because it's on a sunday. Gamestop does their payweek sun to sun from what I hear. apparently that's a big enough deal that they never want to do any sat/sun midnight launches.

I hope they don't do a midnight release. The GS employee wasn't too convincing about my preorder being in stock the next morning if they did a midnight release and I didn't show up for it.

Another reason to hate Gamestop. Any intellegent Nintendo gamer should avoid this store like the plague. I hate the fact I have to use them as a waiting list option to maybe get a Wii U if I can't get one at launch.

Shame on you Gamestop, shame on you.

This is not a valid reason to hate GS.
You just love to hate things.

Most companies pay Gamestop and its employees to hold midnight launches!

Nintendo doesn't pay for midnight launches, thus many GSs don't feel the need to do midnight launches.

Mine does midnight launches for all major stuff including Nintendo/Pokemon!

Just got back from my GameStop. Went there to finally try out Rayman Legends, which was cool. Talked to the guy about this and he said to ask back when it's closer to launch. He personally thought they would not do one because my GameStop is only getting in 5 Wii U's and I'm one of those 5 people. From a business standpoint, it makes sense to not open up at midnight just for 5 people. I really hope they will do one, but I shouldn't get my hopes up for it. Oh well.

I just asked at mine. He said he doesn't think they will, maybe just open early. He said it's due to them not knowing how many systems they'll have and not getting a lot of pre-orders.

The three Gamestops here where I live are all doing the midnight launch so im guessing its only some gamestops that are doing the midnight launch.

This is ridiculous if it's true. They did a midnight launch for the 3DS on a Sunday, so I don't understand why the Wii U would get the shaft.

One word:
Sundays.

If Nintendo released their games on Tuesdays like everyone else, I'm sure they'd get midnight launches.

But who wants to do a midnight launch on a Saturday night? PLUS Nintendo's releases don't coincide with anything else. It's a lot easier to decide to do a midnight launch when two or three anticipated games are coming out the same day instead of just one.

That said, I'm sure some GameStops will do a midnight launch for Wii U given that it's a whole console with a bunch of games coming out for it at the same time.

This makes little to no sense. Seriously though, if the Wii U sold out at gamestop from coast to coast in 2 days and made a waiting list of over 250,000 people by early Octobober, why the crap would they not have a midnight launch? Sounds like a very poor business decision to me.

I drive past a GameStop every night on the way home from work and I've never once seen my local store do any midnight release stuff for Nintendo products. They only get signage in the windows they get is for something huge and put up the same week it's supposed to be huge and otherwise you wouldn't know they sell Nintendo stuff unless you walked in.
