- insert an SD card into the Wii U
- access the Wii System Transfer application
- put the same SD card into their Wii
- download another transfer application from the Wii Shop Channel
- app will move data over to the card
- this must be put back into the Wii U
- Wii data is moved to the Wii U
- data deleted from SD card
The data that can be transferred in this way includes:
Wii Software save data
WiiWare and save data
Virtual Console titles and save data
Add-on content
Wii Points
Wii Shop Channel activity
Mii characters

Now I just need confirmation that the "locked" online (SSBB, MKWii, etc.) data can be transfered! :3
This may sound like a dumb question but when you do the transfer, it is pretty much how it was for the DSi and 3DS in terms of transferring the data? All the DSi data went to the 3DS and the DSi had nothing on it after the transfer?
Can we select which titles to transfer over or does it do everything? My brother and I share a Wii, but we're getting our own Wii U's, and we wanted to divide our virtual console games between both of us. So, can we both get everything, can we choose, or is it one person gets all?
I wonder if this includes the Homebrew Channel...
Good to see that I can transfer when I get my hands on a Wii"U".
Doubt the Homebrew Channel will come over.
I want confirmation for locked saves like Brawl, The Last Story, Sonic Colors, and Mario Kart being able to transfer...
I wonder if this can be done with multiple Wiis transferring to a single Wii U? I have 2, both with a lot of games purchased on them.
I'd also like to know about the online games' transfers. Since you can't copy the data to an SD card, how can this be done?
I certainly hope not.
Will the Wii points become real money?
I have so many VC and Wiiware games that all of them can't fit onto the Wii itself. Wonder if I'm going to have to do the transfer twice or not.
Whoa whoa whoa...
Wii Points too? Does Wii U use the points system again? Or is it changed into a dollar amount?
Nintendo Points are obnoxious and archaic unless I can, like on 3DS, choose to get the *exact* amount when I buy a game. No more of that "SPEND $10 IN ORDER TO USE $6" or "Spend $20 to use $12" crap. Yeah, you can use that leftover money/points, but what if you have nothing you want to buy after that? Or if you get left with a weird amount (for example, I have 100 points sitting on my Wii). That's the whole reason I didn't buy stuff on DSi and stopped buying things on Wii (from the shops).
That being said, only thing I want to know is if I can transfer my save data from locked games like Brawl or ones that aren't even online, but have leaderboards. Like Darkside Chronicles.
@t27duck
If I had to guess, it will probably just delete it and say "Some software could not be moved because it was corrupted".
@JJOR64
Considering it moves the shop activity over too, I think you'd just be able to redownload them via Wii U, but I guess we'll see.
I'm worried about this too. My old Wii died and I had lots of games purchased on it. I didn't purchase many things on my new Wii but it has all my current stuff. And then my old Wii sort of revived so it'd suck if I had to choose between the two.
I was under the impression that the Wii Shop was 100 pts = $1 and not the odd numberings of XBMP.
"and save data"
Phew!
I guess the Nintendo Channel "activity log" data doesn't get transferred, which is a bummer to people like me (not very many people). Very interesting to hear that the Wii Points get converted into eShop currency!
... Looks like I'll have to make sure all my GC game saves are put on a separate SD card then - don't want them deleted!
@Chosenoneknuckles Won't GC saves will be on your GC memory card anyway?
I have ~100 WiiWare/VC games on a SD card in my Wii.
Do I have to download them all again on the WiiU after the transfer?
Or can that card maybe be put into the WiiU after the transfer?
Uhm.... I have 2 / TWO Wiis... Can I transfer from both? (don't ask why I have two, OK?
My Wii and GC saves are kinda spread and mixed across 3 memory cards atm [me, my sis and our respective others really like playing Timesplitters 2 and 3, so making Maps ate alot of space up!].
So yeah, I'm gonna try and get all the Wii ones on one memory card tomorrow methinks [since Nov 30th is ages away, and I'd likely forget to do it before then - I like to be prepared, even though we don't know when we'll be able to transfer stuff over yet].
What I wonder is people with pirated WiiWare and VC installed: Will it transfer those to the Wii U? Will it know whats legit and whats not.
The Wii is pretty pathetic at detecting piracy so I don't have high hopes that the Wii U transfer app will detect pirated stuff.
What I'm saying is that your GC saves are on a GC memory card, not on the Wii or on an SD card. Unless you have a homebrew thing going on?
Oh, I see what you're saying now. Yeah, I think they're just on GC memory cards only [so I need an SD card anyway].
Ok, sounds good, just hope it doesn't take forever to get through this process.
I'm in the same boat, but I'm not too worried. Because the data that you're transferring, which for us will be mostly save data that doesn't save to SD, get deleted from the SD card you use, I think that the fact that your wii shop channel purchase history gets transferred means that you will siply have to put the SD card that was in your Wii into the WiiU following the transfer process.
I plan on having the SD card slot dedicated to the one I had in my Wii, and then keeping my 2 TB HDD connected via USB most of the time for everything else. Keep the 32 GB internal free for whatever.
