Oy. Still a little sore over Sticker Star. I certainly enjoyed myself, but Miyamoto's unnecessary requirements/limitations and the thought of what this game could have been...ow. But that's just what I want.
A little bit more on topic, this is pretty well-made. Reminds me that I need to replay the previous three games at one point.
I never played a single Paper Mario, but I've been interested in doing so. Anyone out there familiar with the series, any recommendations on which games to play, how they play, or what you enjoyed about them? I've got everything from my N64 to my Gamecube to my Wii to my 3DS, but never touched a Paper Mario game... but I've been getting interested. Just don't know where to start.
I recommend playing them in order. There's no need to, story-wise, but I really liked the original and the Gamecube sequel felt like a good follow-up with a little more polish. The Wii one is an acquired taste, since it ditches the turn-based battles. I liked it, but not as much as the first two. Still haven't played the newest one yet...
@Garlador The gamecube one is the best followed by the n64 version. Play that one on the VC. If you play thousand year door the n64 one will feel vastly inferior

Oh, man. I haven't signed into GoNintendo in so long, but I just HAD to tell you: Get Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
It's generally considered to be the best in the series, but I personally find it to be the best game ever made. This is the only game I have ever called perfect. There are absolutely no flaws whatsoever. I mean, sure, there's a little bit of backtracking towards the end of the game, but still. The game is amazing.
The story and characters are fantastic and not just for a Mario game. The music is incredible, although I think Paper Mario 64 is probably a bit better. The world and scenarios are really original. Like, one entire chapter takes place in a floating fighting arena in the sky, and another takes place in a luxury train full of snobby rich people. The hub town is a nasty port town full of thugs. The game definitely has more imagination that any game I've ever played. Not to mention, the humor is actually really funny.
I'm probably not doing a good job at explaining how great the game is but, man, I love The Thousand-Year Door.
As for the other games... Paper Mario 64 is almost just as good as TTYD, so you can't go wrong with that one either. (And it's only 10 bucks on the Virtual Console.) It's very similar to TTYD in terms of structure, but I think TTYD perfected the formula. Also, it's not quite as funny or imaginative as TTYD.
Super Paper Mario is a love it or hate it type of game. Some people complained that there's too much dialogue, which I don't get. It's still an RPG, so of course there's gonna be a bunch of talking. It still has the humor and imagination of the first two games. Great game, but not as good as the first two.
Whatever you do, stay away from Sticker Star. It's not bad, but it's definitely not great. There's almost no story. It's divided into bite-sized levels with a world map like NSMB. It's very bland, like, there's an ice world, a fire world, grass, forest, ect. The only characters you'll meet are generic toads. The game focuses so much on stickers, stickers, stickers, that it forgot that's a Paper Mario game and it's supposed to be amazing.
Thousand Year Old Door is on my list of older games now to play (going to grab it up this month) before I get a Wii U. I still haven't tried that out yet either.
It's a shame that I might never get to play Sticker Star though as handheld gaming isn't something I do too much of now. But it looks pretty fun. And I can't speak enough of how great I think both PM and SPM games are.
The Thousand Year Door was just an excellent game, built off the success of the prequel. However, a few people prefer the original Paper Mario, and it's not hard to see why. The only bad part about either game (and the entire series) is they are way too easy, and there isn't much replay value (unless you replay them about every half year to a year or so, when the game feels slightly "unfamiliar").
Still, it's sad to see the series regress the way it has. Can't they branch all of this non-RPG stuff off into its' own series, and let Paper Mario be like the 1st 2 games (which are clearly the best games in the series).
It's like Paper Mario is becoming Star Fox slowly (where the 1st 2 games kicked a**, but the sequels sucked; certainly, Super PM and Sticker Star don't suck). It's really disheartening.

TL;DR:
Play the first two.
PM: tyd is my favorite out of the whole series. It's such a wonderful, charming game...
<3 this series.

Sticker Star...well...not so much :p

Sticker Star is still an excellent game even if it doesn't copy Thousand-Year Door bit by bit.
If anything, Thousand-Year Door's pacing issues make it much more difficult for me to replay compared to Paper Mario 64 and Sticker Star.
Play them in order. N64 first. Then TTYD.
imo SPM>TTYD>PM>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SS
The first three are great, SS is more like sticker shovel.
