EoD - Wii U holiday

YouTube videos no longer play in Wii U browser

UPDATE - Temporary fix details here

This one is a killer for me. A few readers have emailed in to let me know that YouTube videos won't play on the Wii U browser anymore. I just fired up my Wii U and was met with the same result. I'm not sure if this is a temporary issue or a design choice, but I'm quite miffed with it. I've been using the browser to play YouTube videos non-stop!

Well it's not like anyone is forcing us to use the Wii U's internet browser. Still that's very crappy to gimp video play on the internet browser and force a sub-par Youtube app on the users. Then again, we all have computers...

So I might be actually be correct that youtube is to blame? Nice.

What's going on?

If I remember right, when the PS3 got the Youtube app, the website on the PS3's browser didn't work since they wanted people to use the app. Its possible that might have happened to the Wii U too.

Chill out, just offering a solution right now. Nintendo didn't remove the ability to watch videos on Youtube, it's that the new layout update for Youtube isn't meshing with WiiU's browser.

I had been using the new layout with the Wii U browser for several weeks until today. The layout is not the problem.

Google also released an update for the YouTube app today that is supposed to improve it (don't know about you, but it does to mine). You seriously don't think this is a scheme to get people to use that app instead?

There hasn't been any changes or updates to the WiiU browser, so how do you explain Youtube just not working in the browser?

If that's true, there should be an alternative Browser like Google Chrome or Opera!

There is absolutely no excuse to restrict youtube.

It only worked before because Youtube (unlike a lot of other streaming APIs) had HTML5 support. I'm guessing that support is temporarily gone from Youtube, but it may be restored at some point.

That explanation would've been YouTube identifying a user using the Wii U browser, and thus blocking them from viewing their videos on their site.

That doesn't matter, though. In light of some discussion I encountered elsewhere, I'd like to retract my insinuating proposal about this problem being a deliberate action on behalf of Google. It's looking less like that to me now.

Like I said before, it's got to be on youtube's end of things. Nintendo hasn't updated anything.

fwiw, i haven't been able to play embedded tubes all week, had to play from youtube.com

New Youtube might not be playing well with others. Or I could be conflating two unrelated issues.

This. I'm not sure about android but isn't iOS infamous for not supporting flash? To be honest, it's a format that needs to die anyways, even Adobe isn't really supporting it anymore from what I've heard. My guess is Google/Youtube just got their wires crossed w/ the new update in regards to whether HTML5 versions play or not. Is there a setting a youtube accounts to FORCE it to play HTML5? From what someone posted on the first page of this discussion it sounds like there might be - definitely a way to see if that fixes the problem.

I can stream videos posted here just fine, problems comes from the youtube site per se.

It's apparently to do with youtube's new update, which for some reason right now displays videos only in flash, which the Wii U and other devices like iphones do not have, even though they request for the videos to be shown in HTML5.

I guess YouTube wants to force us to use the app instead of the browser! But the browser is so much better...

YouTube worked for me after the update, only today has it not worked. Perhaps the YouTube website doesn't work if the user is on a Wii U in order to promote their app. This would explain why embedded videos still work.

youtube works like a charm for me

probably a temporary issue

EDIT: nope doesn't work, embeded videos work, but not youtube itself...

It's a youtube problem, not a WiiU Browser problem. Here's a workaround: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.ph ... ount=16674

I hope they'll fix it soon.

Its the Googles trained monkeys.

Eventually they are able to make the Youtube work. I hope that they move into making Shakerspeare after that, instead of updating Youtube to shovel again.

The GoNintendo site was down for a few hours last night, it wasn't just on the Wii U.
