This comes from the recent Iwata Asks that we shared...
Iwata: What kind of proposals were you making?
Yamagami: (laughs) A game called Fire Emblem 2011.
Iwata: 2011?
Higuchi: Yeah. (laughs) We made proposals that were a complete departure from the medieval worldview so far—like Fire Emblem completely in the modern world or the one which has the sense of an fairy tale. But they were too far out, so we couldn't get started. (laughs)
Iwata: Maeda-san, do you remember what the other suggestions were like?
Maeda: One idea that came up within the team was, well, it was Mars.
Iwata: Mars?!
Maeda: Yeah. Fighting on Mars.
Iwata: Fighting on Mars?!
Kusakihara: Now I know why Yamagami-san was like, "That's too much!"
Everyone: (laughs loudly)
Now we have some crazy ideas of where the Fire Emblem series might go in the future!

Jeeze, makes me think of Street Fighter 2010
Wouldn't that be weird considering that Marth could be Mars?
He did mean Marth! The game would have taken place on Marth. You would play as Caeda.
I see what you did there...
On-topic, while I have no problem with Fire Emblem's traditional setting, it would be nice to see something different at least once, as an spin-off or something. Well, we ARE getting SMT X FE, I guess that won't be a traditional FIre Emblem at all...
I love Fire Emblem's setting and style, so I'm glad they didn't do that. I don't want space-age Marth in SSB4.
Futuristic Fire Emblem was not something I was expecting to say the least.
Sort of glad they didn't do it though, don't think the idea of a space age Fire Emblem game would have gone down too well with the series fanbase...
First thing I thought of when I read, "modern-day Fire Emblem," was Earthbound, and I instantly wanted that. I'd really like to see a modern-day SRPG that uses baseball bats and yo-yos.
Well thats interesting, it probably would have meshed well with shin megami tensei x fire emblem pretty well too. But yea i think on its own it might be to big of a departure.
Maybe someone is a fan of Negima...
Wouldn't modern day Fire Emblem be Advance Wars?
Modern day Fire Emblem would be a bit odd. Sort of like Link using machine guns. It sure would be interesting to see though.
Fire Emblem John Carter style. That'd be interesting.
They already did a modern day Fire Emblem. It was called Advance Wars. (i.e., take away the swords/weapons and give them guns [modern])
