"I think the one word I've said the most this year, by far, is 'Ow!' Not only am I getting calcific tendonitis, but they've also found what are apparently several ruptures in the muscles. My upper arm hurts, and there's this chronic dull pain in my elbow joint as well. On the lower arm, there's this feeling of fatigue around the flexor muscles that turns into pain when I use a keyboard or game controller with my fingers.
There's no instant cure for it, so all I can do is either block the pain with injections or put my arm in a cast to keep the ruptures from spreading. I was told that the important thing was to keep my arm as rested as possible. In order to get it fully healed, the only thing is to not use my right arm or hand. So not only am I using a trackball with my left hand; now I'm using it to eat, brush my teeth, wash my hair, and even drive as much as I'm able to.
As a director, I don't have much time in the weekdays to proceed along with my own work. The entire day is spent overseeing other people, holding meetings, working on other proposals, making visits elsewhere and so on. If I can get everything squared away, then I can work on my own stuff, but most of the time there's just an overwhelming lack of time. Often I go in on my off-days to catch up on my own work, but with my body going on me like this, I have to cut these extra days out of my schedule and even with that I can't use my right arm very much to control things. If this disorder lingers, or if it never gets fixed, there's no telling what impact that would have on the project.
I've had to control two characters at once in a lot of game projects up to now, so as long as I keep it to simple moves, this works well enough. It doesn't go that easy with the Nintendo 3DS version, though, and the debug camera is pretty hard to control. Still, now I realize how important it is to have your health. I'm glad I'm still in good enough shape to work." - Masahiro Sakurai
Health is certainly the most important thing here. I think we'd all willingly let Smash Bros. take a dev delay in order to let Sakurai nurse his wounds. He's given us years and years of great gaming content. Giving him a break seems more than fair.

I lol-ed hard outta this. Funny!!!
lol
the sacrifice
i feel for him , especially since i think he knows there isn't a cure to those . The pain could go a bit lower but not that much . It's quite horrific really .
A one-hand only control scheme option for SSB4 confirmed!
Sakurai, please take it easy! We can wait for Smash Bros! Let your arm heal first!
Wow people in here cracking jokes!? Are you fucking serious? This man has a pretty severe illness. This is the guy who brought us Kirby games up until Air Ride, all the Smash Bros. games, and Kid Icarus Uprising. Saying he should work with one arm is pretty low. Yes I know it's a joke and you don't REALLY mean it but it's still pretty tasteless. I hope his arm gets better I can wait on SSB4. But if Nintendo REALLY wanted to help him lessen his work load they would cancel the un-needed 3DS version.
His health is way more important than anything else. I love Smash Bros., but in the end it is just a game. It's probably a better idea to let him rest his arm and delegate a little bit. I'll be happy if he can keep Namco/Tekken out, unless he wants to include Pac-Man in some capacity. I liked Mario sports Mix, for example, but the Square characters just felt weird.
I have the perfect solution. Bring Iwata in to share the load. If I remember correctly, Iwata developed the original Smash Bros. prototype, right? I'm sure he isn't that busy these days. It can't be that much work running a huge global gaming operation.
I think he should take a break, and let himself heal before continuing on this project. Although everyone wants it, it doesn't mean he should sacrifice his health for it.
*cough*blame Kid Icarus*cough cough*
Poor man. I hope he gets better. Honestly, we don't need the game any time soon. I'd prefer the man takes an extended vacation so that he can relax his arm. He deserves it.
Also, I'm imagining him trying to play Kid Icarus. Now I feel worse.
Differentialy to Miyamoto and Anouma, Sakurai is also a programmer (and a very good one), he is programming his own stuff into his own games that he is directing, is a lot of work.
Ugh, seriously?
Come on, it was clearly not taking the piss out of his condition and of course I wish him well - it was simply a tongue in cheek comment on how badly I want the game.
Sounds like he's played too much Kid Icarus Uprising.
I wish him the best of luck and a speedy recovery!
In all seriousness, get better sakurai.
You should see Gamespot. The comments there are absolutely horrible.
Take a rest Sakurai, the world needs you for as long as it can, we need your games, value yourself over anything else, them your games.
This is what happens when you play Kid Icarus: Uprising for three/four years. Be warned!
Damnit Sakurai, stop working man. There has to be someone there that has played and developed the previous Smash games well enough to know how the game should handle.
Sakurai, I am excited as hell for Smash Bros 4, but if you aren't feeling well, don't work. This guy brought us some amazing games, he deserves a break.
I hope he injured his hand by tripping.
But fap jokes.
Can't he just stand over someone else's shoulder why they code and he be like, "No, you're doing it wrong. I said i wanted more tripping in this game!"
Just saying, he can supervise until it heals. It's not like he makes the whole game himself - I've seen the credits to his games many many times.
he should take time and rest for sure! and the 3ds version can be scrapped as far as I'm concerned, although I'm sure it will be great either way.
