Nefarious exclusive!

The many Nintendo references of Guacamelee

I started playing Guacamelee tonight (PS3). I had heard that it was chock-full of game references, but I didn't know just how many Nintendo-specific nods there were. I grabbed all of these within the first hour and a half alone! Keep in mind, I only took pics of the Nintendo-specific moments. There were many other references to third party games.

Then they should put it on the Wii U.

Yeah. I agree. Although it sounds like they are pretty dedicated to the Playstation. We can hope though, right?

But.... but... it's on Playstation, how do they... are they making fun of...? no, of course not, this is pretty cool in fact. Oh god I want this game now.

Neat. I was already interested in getting this game, and now I've got another reason to.

It looks like Drinkbox is an independent studio, so maybe there's hope for a Wii U version at some point.

Would be cool if it were just this thing, but that game is full of references to Internet memes. Makes me sick.

The game is exclusive to Playstation platforms because Sony funded the game through their pub fund program: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/05/ ... -chickens/

Being a pub fund game doesn't mean it'll be exclusive to Playstation platforms forever though. Even though Sony funded it, the developer is allowed to publish the game on other platforms later on. For example: Joe Danger came to XBLA and Papo & Yo is coming to Steam.

Add these guys to the long list of "we like Nintendo and love their games but we'll never EVER developer on their systems."

As TimmiT said, it was funded partly by Sony so it was never going to come to other platforms off the bat. Doesn't mean they're biased against Nintendo or anything (not that it's also not on 360 or PC? I'm sure if they could it would hit those platforms too.) They also made a game before this that was Sony exclusive, I'm guessing that they did well with it and decided to just stick with the system they knew rather than go on to untested waters of other platforms.

I always love seeing references to other games in games that are completely unrelated. I was going to pick it up tonight anyway (a co-op Metroidvania sounds just awesome) and now there's more reasons to. :)

If Sony helped fund the game, then they should have a say as to what platforms the game appears on right? Whenever they publish a game, they retain the rights to the IP (examples: Journey, Flow, and Flower).

It's really nice to see Sony (and Nintendo) being so supportive of indie developers.

Never heard of this game before now, but between the awesome references and the fact that it's a co-op Metroidvania, I am completely sold. Thanks RMC!

As someone else pointed out, Joe Danger and Papo & Yo appear on other consoles. The three games you named are all from the same studio and they had a three-game contract with Sony. I'm waiting for this to go on sale for less than $10 on PSN. Though I could get it for $12 right now, my backlog let's me wait.

I just finished Guacamelee last night and I can safely say it's one of my very favorite PSN games. It absolutely oozes charm, the combat mechanics are really solid, and the map is pretty big with a ton of stuff to find.

Actually, they're previous game: "Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack" is also on Steam. It used to be exclusive to Playstation platforms though: http://store.steampowered.com/app/206370/
