Nintendo terminating select Wii services

This comes from Nintendo of Australia...

We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company’s products. We would like to inform you that a portion of the online services offered through the Wii console will be discontinued from 28th June 2013. We apologise to those of you currently using these services.

The affected applications are as follows:

- Nintendo Channel
- News Channel
- Forecast Channel
- Everybody Votes Channel
- Mii Contest Channel
- Data exchange with Wii Friends via WiiConnect24*

* Exchange of Wii messages on the Wii Message Board, exchange of Mii characters on the Mii Channel and message/data exchange within some games will be disabled.

From 28th June 2013, the above services will no longer be available even if they are started up from the Wii Menu. However, services other than those mentioned above, such as the Wii Shop Channel and “Today’s Accomplishments” on the Wii Message Board, will remain available.

@Fred Duck

In Nintendo's terminology, "channels" are the same as apps. Different name, same concept.

Its easier to just download a 100% complete file from GameFAQs. I unlocked everything in the game all the way up to those vouchers, then I got the file, so I wouldn't feel so cheap .

...Do they have one for Metroid Prime 3 as well (since that and Trilogy are non-transferable)? Never got around to trading with friends.

Basically, yes, but Nintendo's certainly offering a lot fewer and with a very different focus.
That's like saying a computer "program," is the same as a mobile "app." In some ways yes, but your expectations are different.

And apparently, no one is going to explain what a MPT transfer is.

Metroid Prime 3 had friend vouchers that you had to trade with people on our friends list to get the actual vouchers needed to unlock more in game extras. These were not cross compatible between the individual copy and the Trilogy copy.

I don't know about the US or Japan, but in Europe, there was no Wi-Fi icon on the box. The feature wasn't mentioned on the back of the box, either. Other than that - I totally agree. And it was even more stupid that you couldn't exchange tickets between MP3 and MP Trilogy.

Someone should create a savegame that has all Friend Credits you need, but nothing else unlocked - so future generations still have the possibility to play the game unlock everything, free of spoilers.

Actually, Nintendo should be the one to offer such a savegame.

That's not really possible outside of hacking as you have to play through the game to get the tokens.

My FC is 0815 - 5344 - 4357 - 6843

I have about 15/16 Friend Credits to trade for Metroid Prime Trilogy.

... Unless someone can tell me how to work the Gamefaqs saves... Never done that before. Didn't even know it could be done.

I would assume you put it on an SD card and transfer it to your Wii/U

IIRC MPT saves are tied to a console just like Animal Crossing, SSBB, and Mario Kart Wii. So I don't know if loadinfg a save from a website will work.

Oh. Well I have the stand alone game cause I already had the first Prime and I bought 2 and 3 shortly before Trilogy was announced and never saw the point in switching. Is the stand alone tied too?

Edit: Also, GameFAQs has saves for both the stand alone game and Trilogy that has all the Friend Credits without any other game progress so you can start a new game without having to worry about them.

This and especially the Nintendo Channel NEED to be reborn on Wii U. Wii U needs more things like this. And personally, I always thought that features like the photo, news and weather channels were neat additions. It would be nice to have things like that as well, at least as optional downloads.

I do miss the weather channel, I would love to have it back on WiiU

They really need to move these channels to the Wii U.

They could even integrate them into the Miiverse.

Bye bye Wii.

You were awesome. By far my favorite.

what about the channels that we cannot delete? like the weather and news.. are they just gonna be on there and not working? would be nice if they did a small update to allow us to delete those channels once they are rendered useless

(My opinion)
Honestly, Nintendo had to do it sooner or later. Now that more and more people are getting access to all this information easier, it's kind of pointless to continue these channels. Back when Nintendo Channel launched, i loved watching all the videos and Nintendo Week. Now that I have a laptop and a smartphone, I find out information earlier than Nintendo Channel or Nintendo Power by going on the internet.

Only thing I'm gonna miss is hte Nintendo Channel cataloging my play time. An awesome feature that I wish all systems had. I guess the Wii Message Board will still do that and I can add it up myself, but still.

Yeah, I got save files for both games there.

First, Id have to check the ones available in GameFAQs, but since getting a friend token requires someone sending friend vouchers to you, you wouldn't need to progress at all in the games.
Secondly, neither MP3 or MPT are locked to the console and both can be moved to an SD card, I transfered the save files from my wii to wiiu manually too.

Yeah, one of the big reasons why actually owning hardware and games instead of having everything being service-based is a good idea.

I don't mind buying smaller digital games. I have already spent quite a bit on the eShop. But I never full releases!

Not all downloadable games are service-based. If they're fully playable offline, or better yet DRM-free, you still maintain a large degree of ownership and don't have to worry about losing them.
