Aonuma comments more on The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2, an idea 3 years in the making

“The world of Hyrule has been reborn in a highly realistic stereoscopic vision, which will feature a new story and new puzzles to be solved. The development for the successor of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is going smoothly, so, please look forward to

The day we’ll be seeing the successor is still further ahead, but for those of you who wish to contribute or show your support, please comment on the Wii U The Legend of Zelda series community [on Miiverse].” - Eiji Aonuma

Aonuma seemed to hint that the idea of taking a 2D Zelda and making it 3D is something Nintendo has been toying with for awhile. This was a goal the team has been working on making a reality since 2011.

Well Miyamoto mentioned years ago about A Link to the Past and adding 3D... so yeah \o/

Highly realistic, lmao. I love the cartoonish style the game has, bringing it back to the series roots, but it's anything but realistic.

Also, I really hope Nintendo isn't going to start using Mii-Verse as it's sole source of feedback... that place is full of facebook level idiocy, with a pinch of deviantart... It did get us EarthBound though, which is why im all the more worried that it's their go-to place.

And making 2D Zelda isn't exactly new either, as we've only ever had 2D on the handhelds... they're just going back to what made 2D Zelda good in the first place, which, I hope, can only be a good thing. I'm not too wild about all the new ideas they have introduced to the DS games.

I was wondering the same, and I guess what he meant was that it was a 3D so well done it looked as a living thing. Hope they treat this one with so much thought, It's just that at first glance it looked a little bland to me (kind of a NSMB vibe).

The eShop Video DID alot of justice to the game, tough.

I have played and beaten all the Zelda games upon their release (yes including NES). Some of the hand-held games were different, and while I enjoyed them, I never placed them too high up compared to home console versions.

I think this is going to be the big game for the 3DS this holiday season, along with the Italian plumber on the Wii U. The one issue I feel most have when playing games today, and I am guilty of it as well, is because you have so much experience playing games, you cannot be tricked but also your expectations are too high. A Link to the Past is my favorite game in the series, but it's pointless to expect the same feelings I had playing that game when I was 11 or 12 to run through my body today.

I will watch the 3DS eShop video, but after that, I will not seek out videos/articles/interviews/reviews of the game until I buy it, play it, enjoy it for what it is, beat it, and make up my mind.

@bound_for_earthbound

It didn't necessarily get us EarthBound.

EarthBound only *just* came to VC in Japan. We're getting it because it was the "right moment" that Reggie always talked about, since it made perfect sense to release it in the West only after Japan finally got it on VC.

It's hard to keep a game from us that Japan didn't even have, isn't it?

@Asakura Hao

I think the problem is that it looks too much like ALttP.

obviously, that's the point, but as it stands we've only really seen ALttP's map, but with another dimension. The new tower *is* new, but it's very similar to Tower of Hera.

Honestly, I am drawing more similarities to Sonic 4 Episode 1 (not 2) than NSMB. Sonic 4-1's whole thing was retreading old visuals, maps that were new but looked like they weren't, old enemy designs and old bosses, but was 3D and had new moves.

The difference here is Sonic 4 *felt* nothing like controlling him in Sonic 2 or 3. People who played ALttP2 said it felt like playing ALttP, but faster. So that's an improvement.

@DBPanterA

This is a thing.

I'm in the same boat with playing/beating them all at release (except Zelda 2, which I didn't own until Gamecube & still haven't beaten, and ALttP which I didn't play for myself until the GBA port), though I happen to think the handheld games are the best of the 2D titles.

That aside, back to what I said was a thing: ALttP2's nostalgia excitement is not going to be the same as the excitement when playing any of the first several Zeldas.

The video was exciting, and it will be awesome to play for the first time, and noticing throwbacks, but the actual nostalgia will not retain that steam. From the way they keep describing it, it sounds like this is a "New Super Luigi U" for ALttP. I'm super pumped for this game, and I think it's going to be amazing, but I don't want Nintendo to pull a NSMB and try riding solely on nostalgia.

Luckily, Aonuma and *his* team seem to be working on it, not a different team. NSMB is worked on by a separate team from those that usually made Mario titles. A team that excels at, surprise, ports and remakes. So I'm not THAT worried.

I do think that people are going to have the wrong expectations though. It's almost a mistake to make it a sequel to ALttP and I kind of hope they DON'T call it "A Link to the Past 2" here for that very reason. People WILL have high expectations and they have to realize that as 90s/80s nostalgic fanboys, they are going to be too high and the game will never meet them. It's going to be great, and I'm sure *I'll* prefer it to ALttP, but a lot of people are going to whine that it wasn't enough like ALttP or was too much like it and didn't live up to being a sequel.

As for videos, yeah, it's probably for the best to not look into it past the eShop vid. Nintendo's going to spoil dungeons and puzzles.

It always confuses me to see this, because I always remember Japan's Brawl update years ago. http://www.smashbros.com/jp/gamemode/va ... ous23.html

Mother 2 is one of the games on that list...was it not on virtual console before?

Oh, as for Link to the Past 2, it's good to see the idea was floating around for so long! That means much more heart put into it.

@AnoukiAgentYellow It is amusing in hindsight that Miyamato was confirming this game's existence back then. :P

Actually, I would still like to get a 3D remake of the original ALTTP. Maybe they could include this as a bonus in the new game?

No, Mother 2 wasn't on VC anywhere (not even in Japan) until this year. Why they bothered to have a VC demo of Earthbound in Japan's Brawl is beyond me.

This game looks awesome! The handheld Zelda titles are the only way to go!
