Sonic Lost World to include new gameplay, enemies, old/new friends

"With 'Sonic Lost World,' we're going to introduce new gameplay and enemies, which is always fun. In terms of Sonic and his friends, he'll have his same friends there, and I think there'll be some new ones as well. It's not a reiteration. It's going to be all new." - John Cheng, president and chief financial officer of Sega of America

As usual, the 'friends' bit always worries me. I don't know how much they add into the mix. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles...that's the group I can appreciate!

If I were a game developer, I would hate to feel shackled to only having the same characters over and over again. Yes, the Amy&Big portions of Sonic Adventure weren't great and I've never been a fan of Shadow, but I would hate for Sega to stop trying introducing new characters just because their first batch wasn't well received.

As long as the 'friends' are just story-based, I don't know why people care.

And even then, I like switching up gameplay. I liked playing Amy (who IS a classic character, as are Chaotix) in Adventure & stuff. I liked Heroes.

I don't like Emerald shard hunting or fishing or shootan/drivan. I want it to be like old Sonics if friends are playable: Mostly similar gameplay, but slightly different.

But yeah, friends were in Generations and were handled well, IMO.

@MoldyClay Because gamers like any excuse to complain @ the first sentence.

I think the typical gamer moans more on the interwebs than they actually game, tbh...

I'd love Sonic / Tails / Knuckles / Amy for playables [I liked Amy in SA1 - an expansion on the Hammer gameplay would make for some decent platforming].

But think we'll probably get Tails and or Knuckles at most.

I'm not the one to judge new Sonic characters, never hated them, though (except maybe Big, but in Chronicles, that bastard's a strong character), but I just hope they get rid of Sonic-only and get at least 4+ playable characters (as in the first Sonic Advance, same zones, different abilities).

To be fair Mario's been getting WAY more friends and characters added with each game, yet nobody whines about THEM.

I don't see the problem with new characters. With the exception of Big and Amy in SA1, they never really had a detrimental impact on the game.

Wasn't really gonna give this game much interest but now that I hear this...

OH YEAH! :pbj:

Now I'm excited. :D

You, sir, gave us a strong argument.

When they say "old friends" I have a terrible feeling that translates to " Just Tails, maybe a special cameo from Amy "

I like Sonics friends. I like variety in my gameplay. The problem was never just Sonics friends. It was how terrible they played, and being forced to play them... It got so bad that in Sonic 2006, you would be playing a Sonic stage, and minutes into the level, you'd have to play as a terribly half baked Tails or a very wonky Knuckles. No getting around it.

Sonic Advance had the right idea. You could choose between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Emphasis on Choose. You didn't have to even play as all the characters to unlock that final Super Sonic level. And the characters all played well, similar but unique, with the exception of Amy, who was still well designed.

I don't want "Sonic and unplayable Tails" for the rest of the series. I want them to take the risks to figure out how to make Sonics friends fun again. If that involves making them both into boostless Sonics with Flight/Gliding, I'm down for it.

I'd hardly call Luigi and Toad "Way more friends" than Sonic ( unless you're talking about spinoffs which you shouldn't be making that comparison ). And they, for the most part, play exactly like Mario, and you usually can't even play as them unless you're playing Multiplayer. People are actually whining about who you CAN'T play as more than characters you can.

The Mario series could actually stand to have more unique playable characters to choose from.

@bound_for_earthbound All this.

They've [almost] perfected the Sonic-Only gameplay [just need some more open-spaced levels now, since we're keeping the Boost gameplay, and constricted corridors doesn't mesh well with that] - now I want SEGA to have some balls and take some risks, introduce Tails and Knuckles back into the playable fold.

Speed, Flight and Power traits lend easily to playable characters, you only need to look at S3&K for that. Or SA1.

Sonic tails and knuckles please! Maybe use the others as multiplayer "skins" (Shadow for sonic, rouge for knuckles, charmy bee (sic) for tails, etc)

Part of me is hoping that when Lost World gets released, all the ORIGINAL THE CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL posts on Transformed will shift over to Lost World. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonic, but I don't like wading through a million posts by 12 year olds while looking for other Sega things to talk about on the Miiverse community.

@Kenichi340

People tend to rebound this with nonsense like "Mario's new friends are actually good". Not saying they aren't, but it's not an argument. Mario has more characters than Sonic does.

@Magolor

Replace Amy with E-102. Amy was just smaller Sonic/Tails levels, but with an enemy chasing you.

@bound_for_earthbound

I think that was the point. Even though most of Mario's new friends are via spin-offs, he still has tons of them, and they're unplayable, but unnecessary. And when characters like Honey Queen bleed into Mario Kart 7, I have every reason to be upset that they were chosen instead of a normal character.

And while I like Rosalina, there was no real reason for emo-hair, blue dress Peach.

And yes! People complain about adding new friends for Sonic, but you don't even play them that often.

Sonic Adventure was *all* old characters except Big & E-102.

Sonic Adventure 2 added Rouge & Shadow, but they were clones of Knuckles & Sonic. Eggman & Tails levels were clones of E-102 levels.

Sonic Heroes added no new playable characters except E-123 (Cream was in an Advance game first, and even then, she is a clone of Tails/Rouge/Charmy), who played the same as Knuckles, Big & Vector.

Sonic 06 added Silver.

Since then, we got nothing.

Now, handheld, they also added Emerl & Blaze to normal Sonic games. And a raccoon. But aside from Blaze (who was actually a good character) they haven't crept out of those games.

The bird guys are exclusive to Sonic Riders and spin-off stuff.

So only 5-6 playable characters have been added to console games and 90% of the time, they were just clones of older characters.

So I don't understand the problem. And newer characters like Chip aren't even playable.

Yeah, did you know it took all of Generations' versions a year to match what Colours did in 3 months [1.8 million or so WW]!

It still shocks and saddens me that a 20th anniversary title sold so, well, normally. I guess that's why Ice Cap etc. DLC was never even hinted at [yet alone released]... :|

I, for one, would love if they could revive old enemies like Fang or the Battle Kukku Army. With the series going back to being more lighthearted again, they'd fit in well. Eggman is certainly a-ok as the big bad, but it couldn't hurt to give Sonic a slightly bigger assortment of villains to contend with.

I'm also in agreement that having the likes of Tails, Knuckles and Amy present as playable characters would not hurt. Having been playing S3&K again recently, I've been having a blast exploring the levels as Knuckles and using his gliding/climbing abilities. I do miss that sense of variety.

Saying that one hate's Sonic's 'friends' is really just a short-hand for the increasingly overwrought emphasis on ridiculous stories that Sonic games have had, coinciding with the jump to 3D and all the baggage that entailed.

Given that new (and old) characters are frequently accompanied by some of the worst-written/directed/acted cutscenes to come out of the medium (generally unskippable ones at that), people are justified in being wary of even more of them.

I mean, look at this stuff. How many of the characters in this picture should people associate with fond memories? Big and his fishing? Rouge and her scavenger-hunt segments (and for that matter, Knuckles's)? Shadow's creepy dead human love interest? Omachao and his constant Fi-esque tutorializing? Alien Dude Who Was Voiced by Dr. Claw, and the guns/vehicles Shadow used to support/combat him with? Lava worm guy and his incredibly boring boss fights? The Genie characters and, uh, the entirety of the storybook games?

it's like a time capsule of much* of what was bad about sonic over the last decade-plus. all the repressed memories are coming flooding back.

"Sonic Heroes added no new playable characters except E-123 (Cream was in an Advance game first, and even then, she is a clone of Tails/Rouge/Charmy), who played the same as Knuckles, Big & Vector."

Sonic Heroes having twelve playable characters that are all clones of the same three characters is a prime example of why having more characters is a bad thing for gameplay as well, since that was one where players had to run through literally the same terrible levels and bosses in precisely the same order with characters that played exactly the same way four different times. :X

(Sonic '06 had the opposite problem, where the strain of coming up with nine(!!!) different movesets clearly drove whoever had that job insane.)

"And newer characters like Chip aren't even playable."

Let us not pretend that people are irrational for not liking characters that subject us to some genuinely painful voice-acting. :x

*Pele the Beloved dog, the Werehog, the last boss of Generations, and Grind-Rails are not pictured, so obviously I cannot say 'All'
