Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS to have single player campaign, character movies, plus talk about speed/design choices

Information comes from a Polygon interview with Masahiro Sakurai.

"To paint in broad strokes, Melee is for the maniac, the veteran player, while Brawl is for a newer, more casual gamer, as far as the speed goes. Melee, of course, is super fast, and the people who are used to that game love that gameplay. But it may be a barrier for folks who found it a little imposing. Brawl was designed to be more approachable and accessible by folks who might [used to be playing] Wii Fit or Wii Play. Now, with the new Smash Bros., we're thinking the positioning will be really right in the middle.

The idea with Smash Bros., you have four players come together, and it's a fair playing field. The idea of having one person with this special controller and special features that are only available to the gamepad player flies in the face of that. Right now, we're not adding any additional [GamePad] functionality at all. With Smash Bros. being a four-player game we want people to be on equal footing. That's our main philosophy when it comes to control features.

There will be a single player [campaign], but it won't be like the [Subspace Emissary] mode in Brawl. One thing we can do with the Smash Bros. series that's unique to us — because we have all these different disparate characters brought together — is we can create that sort of fan-movie experience as a special gift. But now those things are posted on the internet, it doesn't really become a gift for people who played the game.

What we decided this time around, we're just going to have [those movies unlocked] from the beginning. We're going to have a movie for Wii Fit Trainer, The Villager and Mega Man and they'll be viewable right at the beginning, you can watch those right away.

At this point we have no plans for downloadable conten. Our goal is to have a Smash Bros. that has enough content, in terms of characters and stages, and that's where all our energies are focused. There's no fundamental opposition to downloadable content if it's something that felt like it worked. We haven't really decided whether we're going to do it or not. We're not opposed to it, we just need to work on completing the full package."

@SparkyMuffin This.

I like to work to unlock things. Like, ya know, I have to get X stars to progress in a 3D Mario game.

If all the content is unlocked from the offset, what's the point?

Glad the Subspace concept is gone. A long affair that sported no real level etc. relations to the series SSB reps. Less time and resources spent on such stuff, the better.

Curious as to what these character movies will entail - them receiving their SSB invitation [alia AC avatar in the reveal trailer] and meeting the others for the first time?

Could be fun. :)

@BigLord Events Mode has to be in.

The Stage Creator should be too [right?!}

Good, I did not like Subspace.

We need more story modes like Subspace. If you disagree with that, something is wrong with you. If there's no story, this game is going to be boring. We need to play through something. Missions are very boring. BRING MORE SUBSPACE

Bye, Sub Space. Maybe they'll bring back the "Every one on a bus" concept.

The SSE was fine but I kind of resented it because it supposedly took a ginormous portion of the development time which should have dealt with fixing other things, mainly character balancing and the online.

I know i am in the super small minority but i actually only played smash bros (the series) because of the subspace emissary. It's a great coop game, difficult enough, quite long and with many characters. Also yeah the movies were nice, not something that i would want to see outside of context though. If there isn't something close to that, i don't think i'll play the game at all. For now, i'm going to foolishly believe they'll have some sort of megaman stages in it, and that would make it so worthwhile .
Obviously, the main point of the series is the versus fighting part, i get that.

Eh, I played Subspace once and never touched it again. Can't say I'll miss it.

My only problem with subspace is that I feel like it made the characters way too easy to unlock... even then, the other goals to unlock the characters were really lame when you compare them to Melee. That was my favorite part of Melee, honestly.

The events in Brawl were pretty lame compared to Melee as well...

I'd love to see a story mode that mixes the games together rather than put them in a weird-smashy world.

Guys

Listen

What if

Guys I'm serious

What if the single player campaign was like the new season of Arrested Development, where each character had their own storyline that crossed paths with others

I would actually be okay with this.

And Game & Watch's cinematic has to be done like a silent film. Title cards and everything.

You guys have great ideas.

And you get to the "boss" of the campaign, and can only go past if you have a certain amount of characters unlocked like with Melee's event mode?

I don't play smash bros for the single player campaign, so I wouldn't mind if they didn't do something like subspace again. Think of it this way, if they don't worry about the story the game can be done MUCH faster.

I can understand that. But for someone like me, who doesn't really play have a bunch of people over to play Smash, the adventure mode for Brawl was awesome. And even for two-player co-op, we had a really good time. It just added so much to the game.

I would be okay with a new campaign so long as they made it significantly better than Brawl's. The cinematics were (still are) amazing but the campaign overall seemed a little lame and boring. And there were some pretty big pacing flaws. So long as they make it better and still give the core mechanics more attention this time I would be okay with it.

Though, an addition of an Arcade Mode with separate cinematics would be cool.

One thing I liked the most about SSE was all the stickers and the rpg-lite element it added to the characters. That was a neat little touch that made it more fun, I thought. I agree that they should have even MORE fleshed out platformer/beat em up levels for it. But overall I really enjoyed it. I'd be really sad if they went back to the more bare-bones approach that Melee had.

Personally, I find Subspace a dud mostly because of how it takes place in this generic location. If we went through different Nintendo-themed enemies and fought Nintendo-themed enemies, it would've been more interesting.

I think what I'd like to see is more in line with Melee's Adventure mode with themed stages and enemies, but with branching paths. Maybe have a total of 30 or so stages, but you only go through 10 in any one playthrough. Have a few secret stages scattered in, too.

Oooooh... this would be cool. Maybe a Victory Road themed stage where you fight off hordes of Zubat? And a stage themed after Bowser's Castle where you jump over pits of lava? That would be so cool.

I feel it's more of a waste of space to have individual character stories. What bore me to hell in Melee's adventure mode was to do the same things over and over with each character.

Exactly. I really liked the storyline/idea of SSE, that they were all scooped out of their realities and plopped into this "generic" land, where they had to make their way through and band together to fight the final boss. Sure, that kind of concept could absolutely be more fleshed out, but I'd like to see something like it again. I thought it was very well done.

Gee, I kind of understand why Nintendo monetizes those Let's Plays now...

I was really hoping for a SSE 2, so this saddens me a little.

However, I'd love for it to be like this. All characters have their own little storyline, with their own small world map (and a Boss at the end for each character). Mario for example could have 5 levels from the Mario games. Ice Climbers would have maybe 2 levels, since they aren't that huge of a franchise. And so on. And of course there should be some sort of crossover with other franchises, since it is Smash Bros. ^^ If they do this, and have a few cutscenes for each Story, I will be more than happy enough.

I liked the SSE mode, especially cooperative, but I'm also interested in seeing what this new story mode will be like.. Hopefully it will feature a co-op mode too.

I loved Brawls coop platformer.

But if they can make the main game even better and release it some day too, I don't mind having something simpler as a single player.
