NYTimes - 'Wii U is also the only new console with a video game worth playing'

The tide is changing when it comes to the perception of Wii U. Have you seen all the mainstream articles talking about how the Wii U is the right system to go with this holiday season, due to all the games available. Now the NY Times has jumped on the bandwagon, saying it's the only new console with a game worth playing this year. Can you guess what game that is?

I agree. I don't think it will help Wii U but I don't find the games on the other consoles very appealing.

Yeah, none of the PS4/XboxVHS games interests me so far (kinda curious about Black Flag, but that's on the Wii-U too, so, yeah).

Still, that isn't saying much. And we also must factor in that the Wii U has been out for an entire year, already. If it couldn't have something even slightly appealing by this point, that would be really bad.

Sadly, all we've got (IMO) is something slightly appealing. The PS4 and XBO just launched. The Wii U is in a different place.

It pains me to imagine that gamers - specifically Wii U owners - might forget or ignore the undeniable quality of New Super Mario Bros. U, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Rayman Legends, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, The Wonderful 101, Lego City Undercover...even Nintendo Land is a fantastic proof of concept that works well if you can manage to gather a handful of people to enjoy it with. Super Mario 3D World isn't the ONLY great game on Wii U. It is one of the best for sure, but it isn't the system's only saving grace.

The article is decent. But I feel it ignores all of these other fantastic games and pretends the Wii U is only outfitted with one good game, period. What a shame.

@KingOfSafari

Very true, very true.

I've been enjoying my Wii U all year long. Mario's great but his games are far from the only ones worth playing!

PS4 and One have both hardcore value, filming themselves and publising it on facebook with the share option. I'm so glad i'm a casual on a Nintendo since i don't care about facebook, youtube or whatelse seems to be for sony and microsoft the major concern for hardcore gamers, oh and tv, tv, tv, tv! i just have a console to play games.

Not a bad read though I don't like how every Wii U game thats not Super Mario 3D World is disregarded. That said, it's nice to see some positive news.

Good to see the Wii U getting so much positive attention lately, especially from major news outlets. Looks like Nintendo might reign supreme this holiday season with the Wii U. Nobody wants to buy a $400-$500 console with no good launch games when they can get the new Nintendo system with Mario and Zelda on it for a more reasonable price. That's what parents will be thinking about when they go Christmas shopping.

@my name is S

Onlive enabled you to post game videos to facebook and social media a long time ago. This is nothing new and really it didn't have that big of an impact. Wii U can post screenshots to social media via image share and I'm perfectly fine with that. My friends seem to think it's pretty cool because it's not a video that they have to devote 3-5 minutes of their time to watching. They see a really cool scene from a game that I snapped and like it, simple as that. Video's in general don't get that much attention on social media(excluding youtube) so like I said I don't really see it being that big of a thing.

This is great. And a mainstream outlet at that.

I agree. It's a good article, but they definitely forgot about those games you just mentioned; they need to be spotlighted, too, alongside Mario 3D World to show the rich diversity the Wii U game library has. And let's not forget the indie games and the Wii U's backwards compatablity to play 'all' Wii games; they, too, need to be spotlighted, as well.

Oh my gosh, yes! Why is nobody talking about the fact that the Wii U is the ONLY new-gen system that is almost fully backwards-compatible with the preceding generation's games? Neither the Xbox One or the PS4 have this feature, and it's a feature that's really important to me.

Also, even though Virtual Console is nothing new for Nintendo and they have a lot of catching up to do with themselves - a LOT - it's still great to have. I have a nice handful of retail games and probably a dozen or so virtual console/download games on the system. I've got plenty to play.

Fortunately, Iwata is already thinking about making improvements with the service, aside from the ability to play eShop purchased VC games on the Wii U Gamepad. ^_^

Wii U is the best value, it's $100-200 cheaper than the competition, WITH at least one or two pack in games no matter which version you choose. It's the only system with backwards compatibility, the only system with free online play. It's got a god-load of eShop games in the pipeline, and games of about every genre you could want.

I think Lego City, NSMBU, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter Tri HD and Mario 3D World already give it that edge, if you ask me. And next year is going to be huge for Wii U games.

Having not read the article yet...I'm going to guess...Tank! Tank! Tank!

<edit>

I'm wrong. :(

Well, Super Mario 3D World is all right.

Nice positive, but wasted oppurtunity to have actually had some effort put into it as everyone has mentioned. The list of Wii U exclusives looks amazing next to what you get on the other systems right now.

Monster Hunter
Zombi U
New Mario U
New Luigi U(which both now come with the system at 300)
Mario 3DW
Lego City
Wind Waker HD
W 101
Pikmin 3
2 Scribblenauts games
Wii Party U
Wii Fit U
Wii Sports Club
Game and Wario
Nintendo Land
Mario and Sonic Olympics
Sonic Lost World
Pokemon Rumble U
Nano Assault
Mighty Switch Force

I mean, are you freaking kidding me?

The last year I've been led to believe that Nintendo fanboys are pretty extreme... but the launches of PSOne proved me so wrong. Millions of people buying into systems that basically offer NOTHING at this point that isn't possible on everything else... woah.

In all honesty, I think the absolute best any gamer could do, in my personal estimation, is to have a combo of Wii U, and PC with Steam.

well that's not fair ! it's not every year we got a luigi mansion and a glorious new perspective 3d zelda !
lol
seriously it's exactly like last year, at the time i asked if someone could point me to the other local shooter with asymmetrical play where all parties are vital and uses a lot of vertical elements. Or the other 1:1 sword fighting with asymmetrical play where protecting the 1:1 archer and where the strategy is vital . Craziest thing it was in the same package. But lonely gamers did not experience that. Nope online gaming is not a viable substitute to local gaming for technical reason (ping latency is not magic) but also because online everyone wants to do the same thing at the same time.

so this year, please point me to the other 3d platformer with four player action and four different characters .

other places, it's shooter autoaim corridor 20 seconds action, openworld i don't know what to do except those three four actions, and a few racing games which are the most interesting .... exactly like last year ! that's an undeniable fact. Oh sorry you gain xp point for facebooking scores or something stupid like that; oh double sorry i forgot this year to play online you have to pay 60 bucks , lol ! and micro transactions apparently ! oh wow

PS One? That is so 13 years ago.

Side note: I didn't like how sony released the original PlayStation with the name "PSX," then took the name away to use on its DVR / PS2 / DVD burner thing.
