REPORT - Sony May Purchase Factory That Manufactures Wii U's Embedded DRAM

One of the most important components of Nintendo’s Wii U is its embedded DRAM chip, that is considered the “heart” or the “life stone” of the console. That chip is manufactured at the state-of-the-art Renesas Electronics plant at Tsuruoka, in the Yamagata Prefecture.

Today several Japanese sources, starting with the morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper and followed by several reputable business sources like Toyo Keizai, Nikkei, Reuters, Sankei Digital, Mainichi and Asahi Digital, reported that Sony is currently in talks with Renesas for the acquisition of the Tsuruoka plant.

^ But they are. ^^

Also, yeah, they shouldn't be able to afford that, if they even have to sell their Buildings to survive. ._.

Feels like ruthless business practices. Freaking Sony.

Well Nintendo won't need the chips once they shut down Wii U production soon.

Kidding, kidding.

They can either:

A. Find another manufacturer to make the part.

B. Pay Sony for the part.

Not really a big deal.

I wouldn't be surprised if ultimately Sony feels threatened by Nintendo's long term staying power and is trying, note trying, to take a shot at them.

Nintendo probably has a long term contract with the facility already. This will probably mean they will just have to pay Sony for the chip. No big deal.

If they don't have a contract they will have to find another manufacturer. That is, if Sony doesn't want Nintendo's money. I'm sure things will stay as is...

They might as well. Nintendo doesn't need the factory....it's not like they need to build many systems right now.

Why would Nintendo let that happen? Nintendo has more money than Sony so they should be able to outbid them easy.

LOL, Sony didn't have all the techonology they wanted.

Now they envy again of something Nintendo has done that they didn't even think about?

Poor Sony, there there.

You know, I think we get it by now, you can stop now.

Sony does love copying Nintendo and failing at it, so this can be a good thing, hehe.

nintendo already planning to move to other companies in 2 year
renesas announced restucturing 1 year ago
they may go licensing their techs or go find a partner in china to continue production.
Japan is technically in economic default (same for Usa) so also big companies like this are trying to keep alive ...
i guess sony it trying to force then to sell for cheap,
japaneses don't like feoreing companies to buy their home state of art companies...so sony could get great technologies for his camera product fro cheap...

sony already worked for nintendo in snes era...
like samsung for apple...;)
it wouold be nothing strange if this happens again...
