Wii U sees highest monthly sales so far in Dec. 2013 (UPDATE)

Coming from NPD analyst Liam Callahan...

"Hardware sales of the Wii U were also positive with December 2013 marking its highest month for unit sales month so far."

We don't have the number yet, but having the highest total yet is certainly a good thing. If numbers were worse in Dec. than Nov., things would be really bad. As of right now, it seems the sales are above 463K. We'll be sure to bring you the number if/when it pops up.

UPDATE - Unconfirmed reports put the sales figure somewhere around 480k sold.

On one hand, it seems to have performed better than what most of us expected, especially when 3D World isn't even in the top 10 chart, and the console only did around 220k for November. On the other hand, even if that sales estimate is true, its still the lowest selling home console of the month, and to make matters worse, it really needed to sell a minimum of 500k in order to make up for the sluggish sales for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, it seems like January sales will be going downhill as they already have done so in Japan despite how it outsold Ps3 in December.

3D World actually HAS been in the top 10 chart over the last several weeks, at one point right around Xmas selling over 300k copies in one week worldwide.

And as I have been telling people, Wii U had a really good December compared to the rest of the year. The system is now sitting at around (or possibly slightly over) 5 million units sold. NOT "great", but the recovery over the last few months of the year was impressive. With bigger games looming this year, Wii U sales, and thus hopefully game sales, will continue to be steady, and even increase.

Nintendoom needs to stop.

Just like how Japan, with it's better than expected holiday, was supposed to maintain sales momentum? It's already back down to selling <15k a week, quicker than last year even. Mediocre holiday boosts != great recovery.

LSF22 wrote:@gbpackers31

December may be a bigger month, but everyone did their shopping before Christmas. That final week probably doesn't do much for anyone unless you want discount decorations and wrapping paper.

It definitely doesn't do like previous weeks, but people do receive money for Christmas, and could buy systems. Still, that's also why I said it wasn't that much over.

15k isn't all that bad if it stays there and doesn't drop further with a DK bump on the way.

Yeah, 15k hold a week wouldn't be that terrible right now, but I wouldn't expect it to just stop dropping, just like last year. Nor do I expect that large of an increase for DK. But we'll see.

I cannot speak for packers, but personally I say not getting outsold by two newly-launched consoles, a seven-year-old console, an eight-year-old console, or either of the last two Nintendo consoles in literally any year before they were replaced would be a nice place to start.

IIRC but didn't the Wii U outsell the Xbox One somewhere?

Dunno, I was referring to America.

Though if you have a non-VG Chartz source for Euroland, I would be interested.

Wow.. What a bunch of turd eating downers in this room..

Anyway, keep it up world. Buy this super fun gaming console. And here in northeast Ohio wii u and ps4 has been out of stock at stores like Walmart, target and super k but Xbox 1 has been readily available since the holidays. Maybe it's a stock thing and they just have more xboxes

Just about to post that. So, it's not even 500k like we were talking about. 481k is only 18k more than last December, and 109k less than Gamecube's second December...

This only matters if third parties actually recognize that people are buying the system and they should support it.

Otherwise, just increases install base for 1st party games to sell on.

It's not a number I'm disappointed in. I was seriously dreading 300-350k. I think they are going to be okay 'til Kart and Smash.

Also, it's close enough to 500k. There is a 5-10% margin of error, though, that could of course work in the negative as well. No point splittng hairs.

Which will lead to panic mode Nintendo to get out more and better games and make more deals for exclusives. Third parties have been long gone on Nintendo systems, but even still, there will still be the rare Zombi U, Shattered Memories, No More Heroes. That's how it's been since 64. Nothing is bound to change that seeing as Wii sold like bread.

"Turd eating downers". You sir, are my new champion. That was fantastic.

No matter how people try to spin it, Wii U had a good December. Period. And thing will only be looking up in 2014, period.

Well, thas't not really a "big boost" in sales is it?

Personally, I don't see how things are supposed to get that muh better if in a month like December, already with a full year out in the market, with 3D World, Wii Fit U, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics and Wii Party U out too, and the WiiU can't even manage to outsale its past December by a considerable margin.

You're saying that they should have sold better than the December right after the console had launched, was brand new, and had at least some buzz going on? Because then that buzz died during the months and months where almost nothing was released for it.

Also, Wii Fit U got pushed back to January retail, at least in the west, Wii Party U isn't exactly a "system seller", Mario & Sonic has kind of burnt itself out (and were never that great to begin with, sadly), and while 3D World is a great game that has sold very solidly, there are still enough people in the world who saw it as "Not the next gen 3D Mario they wanted" to matter, meaning it's not QUITE the "must have" title you might assume it is. The first "MUST HAVE" Wii U game coming out for the system, at all, will be Mario Kart 8. It looks great, it looks fresh and inventive, it'll have good online (because Wii already did, and you'd expect 8 to have better), it'll hopefully not have the BS issues Wii did, etc. It's a big selling franchise now, and many people are looking forward to it. So yes, I would except Wii U sales to be able to improve past what they did in December 2013 within the next several months. Nintendo just needs to keep the heat on, and try their best to have a new Nintendo published title releasing no less than one every two months, on average, if not better than that.

NintendoLife reported that it indeed did better than in its launch months, Nov and Dec 2012. Apparently the number is pegged at 481k. Close to 500k.

Hiltz wrote:On the other hand, even if that sales estimate is true, its still the lowest selling home console of the month

No it isn't. It's over PS3, a console that is cheaper and with a huge library.

''Expect 300-350k max for December in the US. Possibly less even.''

Yeah, his prediction was terrible. Dec is usually double that of Nov. WiiU follows this pattern.

FadedAreWii wrote:Whelp, Vita is dead. under 100k for December.

That's the real story here. It did 245k last Dec., now it's under 95k. Instead of increasing, it decreased. The words 'abysmal' and 'bad' are the right words to choose here. Vita it seems is the first casualty of the 8th gen, and looks to be Sony's last handheld. Funny looking back at all the 'Vita will kill 3DS' nonsense. SonyGAF is a writhing mass of pain right now.

It's funny because I see a lot of people on gaf lumping Wii U in with Vita and I have to laugh everytime they do it.

And, yeah, in front of PS3 and Wii.

I was thinking it would underperform further, plus the other explanation. But yeah, it was definitely off.

But Another reason why 480k is poor and Wii U didn't have a good December? You say it's following traditional patterns - double that of November. November followed the traditional pattern of about 4x October. October was terrible (51k).

So, despite the price cut, despite all the game releases including SM3DW, and despite the heavily increased advertising (something so many have championed about saying that's cause for the poor sales), Wii U didn't manage to break a single traditional trend, which gives credence to the future performing just as poorly before the holiday sales, aka the holiday did nothing. There is no forward momentum. If you take away the holiday bump, typical Wii U sales are just as poor as they were before. Previous months were not good -> December was not good.

Heavy advertising is overstated. They made a couple kid commercials and had Ellen give away Skylanders bundle.

That's a lot more than before. They've been advertising quite a bit based on people's anecdotal evidence I've read for the past few couple of months. As for me, I've seen a bunch of Wii U commercials over the holidays (and I don't even watch much TV) and at the movie theater, something I've never seen in the past. They had those commercials with Walmart, and had many big sales they were advertising.

Oh, there was more, but not much more. Some of the stuff you mentioned is standard fare. There really wasn't as much of a presence, especially compared to the other two. You also put too much on anecdotal evidence you read on the net, which represents such a small minority of supercore gamers. Does not do a good job of representing reality.

Well, from my point of view, there was 0 advertising prior to the holidays (not even banner ads in stores). During, there was a ton. So, maybe I don't represent the actual reality, but around me, it seemed like a lot (and I rarely ever see Nintendo commercials. I never saw one of those Wii would like to play commercials last gen. Ever).

But in my case, that's significant considering I never see any, so I assumed there was significant advertising. I also heard they were advertising in front of Hulu videos (I don't use Hulu so I can't confirm). Nintendo also commented in their reasons for their forecast revisions that they increased their advertising expense forecast by 8BY, so they were definitely not sitting on their hands over the holidays.

Yes, there was more advertising. Not comparable to the other two new systems, and not even comparable to Wii would like to Play.
