Nintendo sometimes keeps games secret from the voice actors working on them

GN Version 5.0

Nintendo loves to keep their secrets and they go great lengths to do so. You'd think that out of the select few people in the inner circle, voice actors would be privy to some info. Indeed they are, but it only pertains to the lines they read. Believe it or not, in some instances, Nintendo will change character names when dishing out job details to voice actors. That way they don't know who/what they're recording lines for!

This information comes from Rena Strober the voice actor for Azura in Fire Emblem Fates. She details the recording process and how details were kept hidden from her.

“You’re not allowed to know the title of the game, you don’t usually know your character, you don’t know anything about it, because it’s very secret information. So I didn’t know I was hired as a singer, and a speaker, but here was this character that I knew singing was her power. So I just sort of did it and had a great time. ...they often change your character name so you don’t know it’s a sequel to something."

Also, in the interest of full disclosure, Rena made another statement after the original interview. She disputes some of what originally said and we felt it was worth sharing.

“That’s completely wrong! Of course we’re given character traits and history.”
