Yeah, I remember being blown away when i was a kid and first got Mario 2 for NES and reading that Birdo was a boy who wanted to be a girl in the manual. I'm pretty sure any remake of that game has no mention of that, I'll have to check my Super Mario All Stars, and Super Mario Advance manuals (didn't get the Wii one). Seems like it's been a girl since the Camelot sports games started having him/her. But I would assume there is a whole race of Birdos so there would be boys and girls. Same thing with Yoshis, i would think some of them are girls. Of course even the boy Yoshis lay eggs which I somehow have never found odd until just now. Maybe even stranger Birdos lay eggs out of their mouths. While not as many colors as Yoshis, there was a few different colored birdos, but they all wear bows on their heads, so the whole race must think they are girls. I don't know, maybe I am just over analyzing the whole Yoshi/Birdo situation.

Perhaps Birdos just have their own culture that seems silly to humans? Perhaps for them, bows aren't a sign of femininity or anything like that; they're just, well, there, for everyone. Humans just interpret it as crossdressing because that's what they're used to.

That is definitely a possibility. But that also begs the question, how does the Birdo race produce all those bows with their tiny arms? They would have to grow like a cotton plant or sheer some sort of sheep like creatures they are raising (maybe they are shearing Fuzzys, of course that would make them dizzy which would be dangerous while working with shears) for the thread and stuff, then weave it into fabric, then make it into bows. A difficult task when your arms are like a foot long.

^ Maybe... they are Born with the Bows? ^^ Like in Pokémon. Most Pokémon with clothes/accessories are either born with them, or evolving with them. XD

i have a feeling that those oversized kissers come with a natural ability only a few of my previous gf have been able to demonstrate: being able to tie things (like cherry stems) in knots with their tongues; so why not ribbons also? they would just need a supplier or source for the materials.

anyway, other than some vague wording in the original manual about what gender birdo considers him/herself (which itself doesn't explicitly denote a sexual orientation), who exactly is it birdo is attracted to that makes him 'gay'? some have said yoshi, but yoshi is a different species entirely, which is kind of a different topic than simple homosexuality.

Though, in all seriousness, i really doubt ANY Nintendo character is suppose to be Gay. Doubt Ninty would think that'd be good for kids..

I think Ghirahim was just trying to scare Link in that one scene, and he succeeded (He was creepy as hell). Besides, there's the fact that

Anyway, I don't think Ninty is really going to ever touch the issue in games that are targeted at a younger demographic. They'd get bad rep from the crazies out there, unfortunately.

I really doubt any Nintendo characters could be classed as homosexual. Most of the more 'mainstream' ones have at least one character of the opposite gender they're supposedly in love with/shipped with/supposed to rescue, and while Birdo is probably a transexual, that's not quite the same thing as being as homosexual.

And Girahim is just trying to be a creepy asshole, I wouldn't read much more into it than that.
