Serious Discussion:Paint It Black - What is it really about?

OK... I may be acting weird on this one, but is Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones about [spoiler]getting horny?[/spoiler]

I mean... honestly. Did you ever look at the lyrics?

Now, I'm not joking around. Here is some evidence.

He sees girls in summer clothes. Could those summer clothes be bikinis? Could they just be shorts? Who knows? Though I think either would be enough to make a man happy.

He talks about his 'darkness' . Is this 'darkness' what he contains inside his pants? I think so.

He sees people turn away? Have they seen his 'darkness'? I think so.
Like a newborn baby it happens every day? Let me ask you, do you get 'happy' every day? I think so.
When he looks inside himself to see his heart black, is that him being ashamed? I think so.

While this may seem like a funny topic( I know it is) for my first serious discussion, I want serious responses from people. Also, I have no clue why, but I really want to know what Zidane and Cort have to say on this subject, I don't know, I just do.

it is extremely obvious that the first lyric is in fact about that. it s exactly as it sounds no need to pick it part.
besides that first lyric i cannot really say i agree.

i think it could definitely be interpreted that way. my takeaway is a little less specific.

to me it seems the author is suffering the guilt of having done something sinful, immoral, etc... indulge in sexual fantasy for example, and the black is him internally reacting to and working through that regret or guilt.

Yup, I knew you would have a good take on it. That is exactly what I think, he did something he is regreting (Sexually).

for some reason, I always thought of it as being more depressed then regretting something or being horny. It's like he lost his loved one or she cheated on him and he is in a massive depression. So he wants everything to be black. But that's just me.

When he talks about turning away from the girls, I thought he might want to hurt them, because his heart is black. Wanting to see the sun blotted out from the sky sounds like suicide.

Of course it IS Mick, so his "darkness" may well just be... something else.

I've always felt that the song was about an outcast or some angry loner who can't work well with society. He doesn't want to be bothered by happy people thats why he wants everything to be black. When he talks about the girls in summer clothes, it doesn't have to mean a bikini. It could be clothes that are just bright. I understand what you're saying about it being sexual, it is the Rolling Stones after all.

yeah.. that was the other thing that hit me, though depression is a much more obvious--and possibly correct--takeaway. the author... emo?? lol.

there are so many interpretations one can derive from it i think..and that's how poetry should be in my opinion; that's how i write my own anyway. there has been speculation in the past about mick jagger's experimentation with the occult and homosexuality, which during those times would certainly make living with such 'secrets' a dark world indeed. even just those two things put a whole different spin on the lyrics...

then again, on a more uplifting note, black is THE colour for rock n roll...it could just be a metaphor for bringing rock music to the world, especially since it was so new back then.

I always thought of "Paint it Black" was a song about mental illness or depression. I never thought of the sexual reffrences in the song.
