Pearl Harbor Red Sun Rising

Talk about online services such as WiiWare, the eShop, Virtual Console, etc., or about online-enabled games.

I think I mentioned this earlier in the topic, but I don't really care for the idea of flight sim games, so the quick up-down response is actually something I think I enjoy.

Really love the Wii Remote only control style. I initially thought it needed a Wii Remote and Nunchuk from the Wii Shop Channel banner that warns about which controllers the game uses, so that's the one I booted up the game with and......well, even after playing with Wii Remote only I still can't wrap my head (and hands) around steering with the Nunchuk with my left hand; besides my lack of motor-skills with that hand, I wanna tilt the analog stick at the same time, which just makes the camera swoop around to a rear-view. The thought to try switching hands (so Nunchuk in the right, Wii remote in the left) just occurred to me, so I'll definitely have to try that.

Very fun, with a nice difficulty. Once you learn how the AI reacts to different things, you can navigate the air and get behind them, so it's hard for me to say quick-fire "stunts" are necessary, but it'd be nice to see them anyway.

[quote="legendo"]@DarkNight_DS thank you for your kind comments. I think we'll go for some more aerial style moves etc in part 2, if this sells adequately:) Glad you grabbed and enjoyed our game.

Hi Legendo!

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to talk to your fans/people who purchased your game. It's great that you are being so open to discussion!

I think I might have come across a small bug on one of the levels in the American missions. It's the first mission where you are taking off from a boat, you have to protect your (ship) fleet from the Japanese fighter planes, then fighters/bombers, you next have to bomb their carrier etc. On this mission I died quite a few times (I like to stay low to the water all the time, I kept accidentally flying into my own ships while on the tail of one of the enemies planes LOL). On one of the retries of this mission, my plane exploded before it took off the carrier. I assumed you couldn't do anything until after the plane was in the sky and the outside border went from letterbox to full signaling that you are now in control. Are you able to do something which would cause the crash on the carrier or is this possibly a bug?

I'm almost done the American campaign. So far so good! :)

@legendo:
You may want to let NOA know that the game doesn't have any info on the Nintendo Channel.

I just searched, hoping to find a trailer on it...NOTHING.

Maybe I searched incorrectly, but I searched "Pearl Harbor" under names, and no results were found.

If Legendo could get a trailer up on the Nintendo Channel, that may help spread awareness some...though I'm not really sure how many people use the Nintendo Channel other than data nerds like myself.

On a side note... I just realized I own the PC game with the same name (silly me) also by Legendo. I happen to really like the PC game. I just realized that I only have 1 campaign left in the PC version. I must have bought it when it first came on Steam, played it for quite a while and then forgot about it for some reason. Now my mission is to clear both games. I'm almost done the Wiiware game. Just 4 more missions to go for the Japanese side. I won't be able to play for a few days but will be back into it on the weekend.

Also, that "bug" I mentioned earlier also popped up on the first Japanese mission where you take off from the ground. Strange...

Thanks!

@yomanDS One of the nicest comments for Pearl I've read, thank you. I passed it on to the CEO:)

@WesFX I'm the same tbh but the arcade nature of Pearl allows even a simpleton like me to pick it up and look cool infront of my son. That makes me happy;)

@DarkNight_DS Call me Dan. Absolutely my pleasure. I love popping into forums that have a strong sense of community. It helps build a rapport with our customers/fans and it also helps us listen to what what we've achieved, what's liked/disliked suggestions etc. It's also more of a buzz to me personally to see people enjoying the end product than reading reviews on IGN etc.

Regarding the bug, not experienced that one! NOA, NOE, NOJ, internal beta testing etc didn't find it! You should be in the beta testing biz:)

@Coffeewithchess It is on there but it's buried. We're trying to establish why, it's so enfuriating.

Actually I use to be in the alpha/beta testing biz as the man in charge ;) Looking for things other people missed was my specialty. Usually "bugs" like the one I described would get green lit by someone even higher up if the product needed to ship by a certain date due to marketing. It's not a show stopper, just a small annoyance.

Of course for those sort of reports I would have been a tad more descriptive with the exact details. For a quick "hey look" I figured my description above would be good enough.

Have you got any video's up on the Nintendo channel yet? Also, since you have an open dialogue with Nintendo, can you PLEASE suggest they bring the Nintendo channel to the DSi (for DSi ware). I can never figure out what a game is about without searching the net first for that system. ;)

There should be a video on the NA Wii Nintendo Channel, I know that there was!

Regarding having a word with Nintendo, I don't have that much of a clout:)

Just thought I might mention an odd little.... anomaly. With Wii Remote only, and with the Classic Controller, you can steer your plane while it's on the ground. But with the Nunchuk control style, you cannot. And stranger still, when you build up speed and get off the ground, you have zero control over your plane for a few seconds. So it's just like when you take off at the beginning of a mission. And the problem with that is that it doesn't propel you up like it does at the beginning of a mission, so you just potentially crash into a low rolling hill and fail the mission.

Now, I've only taken the time to test this in Free Flight mode, so it might not be an issue in real missions.

Saw that review as well, and maybe you can clear this up, but the motion sensor in the Nunchuk is the same as in the Wii Remote, right? Also, someone might mention to the writer of that review that the shoulder buttons function on the Classic Controller. No reason to only use your thumb for throttle and shooting.

i recently started playing with wiimote+nunchuk(been using wiimote only).. and i wish i had started playing it that way.. just seems more fluid and real to me. i cant believe how good the nunchuk works for something like this.
oh, and the dogfight mode is brutal.. finally made it past 10 kills and 10 minute survival last night. :D

That's the beaut about the controls schemes on offer. There's quite literally something for everyone:) A bit of experimentation and you find the one that suits you.

I haven't attempted Survival on 10 minutes yet, but this game is a blast.
I was skeptical, just because I don't play flying games often; but I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Let me know if you get to the 30 accomplished in Avenging Ace, because I can only imagine how crazy that's going to be!

If anybody here is on the "fence" about the game, and wants to know more; I have put together a video "preview" of sorts for the game.

Hey Dan I don't know if you still come onto these forums, but I'm going to ask this question anyway. Are you guys even allowed to say how well your game is selling? Like Pearl Harbor is selling way better or worst than we thought. I ask this because I'm interested in not only how your game is selling, but how well games sell on WiiWare. But I completely understand if you don't know or can't tell us.

Edit: Also great video CoffeewithChess!

I think Dan is still watching the forums.
I don't know if he can say how the game is selling, but the last 3 days I have checked the Shop Channel, Pearl Harbor has been ranked 3rd, on "Popular WiiWare" titles.

It's ahead of games that released close to it like Jett Rocket, Bejeweled 2, and Toribash.
I would think that means it is doing really well.

Also, thanks for the comment about my video!

@ coffeewithchess

Yeah I've been checking the Top 20 list on WiiWare, but it just sucks that we don't know if that means the top games are actually selling a ton or Wiiware games are selling horrible and the games on the Top 20 are just selling a little less horrible, see what I'm saying?

Yea, we really have no idea.
The game at the #1 spot could be selling thirty copies a month, #2 twenty-nine...etc.

Or, they could be selling thousands(maybe millions?) and we don't know.
I wonder why it isn't public data, since it affects Nintendo's finances and they are a publicly traded company?"

Yeah I know it bothers me soooo much, I wonder how long it will take before they do npd numbers on it every month...I guess not until digital distribution becomes more common, but anyway back on topic. Hope Pearl Harbor Red Sun Rising is selling well!

Here's a video of the 4th mission from the American campaign. It seems a lot of reviewers and gamers that downloaded it have a tough time with the beginning missions, so I put together this video of the mission and wrote a brief article of what I do in the missions to survive sometimes:
