Rate Your VC Purchases!

Postby artimus » 15 Apr 2007 15:13

I don't think there's a thread like this already? If so, sorry!

The idea is to list all your VC purchases and rate how good they are. We can slowly update our lists as we buy more and more of them.

Mine:

Bomberman '93 - 8.0
Super Castlevania IV - 9.5
Kid Icarus - 4.0
Beyond Oasis - 6.0

I own most of the Nintendo releases on their original platforms, so I've stuck to 3rd party and SEGA/TGFX so far.

Bjorna started a review thread quite a while ago, but it got DELETED! :P It is understandable that you didn't know this, because the message boards got messed up.

Anyway:

Legend of Zelda LttP: 9.1
Bomberman '98: 7.6

SEGA Genesis:
Golden Axe - 4.0
Beyond Oasis - 8.0

TurboGrafx - 16:

Nintendo (NES, SNES, N64) -

Besides Golden Axe and Wario's Woods, I'm quite satisfied with my purchases. Bring on Metroid, Kirby's Superstar, and Dr. Mario. While I'm at it, bring on the portable games too. I want to play Donkey Kong Land again...

NES
Tecmo Bowl 7.0

Hmm, that is it so far. Lots of good games on the VC, but the prices are just more than I seem willing to pay. I have 3500 points sitting on my Wii, but little I find worthy of buying. My main problem is I still own most of these games and I would rather just fire up the SNES than pay out $8.

NES
Kirby's Adventure - 8.5
Punch-Out!! - 9.0
Super Mario Bros. - 9.3
The Legend of Zelda - 6.0

SNES
Donkey Kong Country - 8.2
F-Zero - 7.8
Super Castlevania IV - 9.4
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts - 8.7
Super Mario World - 9.6
The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past - 9.2

N64
Mario Kart 64 - 7.8
Super Mario 64 - 9.1

TurboGrafx16
Bomberman '93 - 8.6
Bonk's Adventure - 8.9
Bonk's Revenge - 9.4
Soldier Blade - 9.2
Super Star Soldier - 8.1

MegaDrive
Comix Zone - 8.9
Golden Axe - 5.6
Gunstar Heroes - 8.5
Sonic the Hedgehog - 8.3

I was pretty dissapointed with Mario Kart 64, and Golden Axe just seems like a waste of my money now. As for Legend of Zelda (NES), I just can't get into it. Bonk's Revenge gets honourable mention, it's just well cute, and a very decent game.

I currently have 29 VC titles, so I'm not going to list them all, but I would rate my collection of them around 7.8. I have classics like SMW and lame picks like Wario's Woods. That one being the only title I regret purchasing.

I played Super Mario World extensively at my friends house, and I would give that a 9.

Alright here we go:
Wario's woods: 8 (I like it, no-one else seems to)
Gunstar heroes: 8.7
f-zero X: 9
Sonic the hedgehog: 6
Link to the past: 8
The adventures of Lolo: 9

Link to the past and sonic are the only ones I regret buying (and link to the past only because I already own it) I had never really played any sonic games except number 2, which I thought was one, so when I realized how little speed there was in sonic 1 I was disappointed.

In order of purchase

Star Fox 64 - 60%
I was really disappointed here. Everybody keeps raving about how great it is, but I really don't think so. It's a mediocre arcade shooter at best. Some of the levels have a nice style to them, but you don't really get a chance to look before you're done.

Toejam & Earl - 75%
Slow paced and the controls are horribly unresponsive, but it's an awesome coop game.

Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron - 80%
Just how I remember it. Great, quirky style that takes the action-platforming genre a lot farther than most games. Again, it's even better when played cooperatively.

Gunstar Heroes - 65%
I made sure to try this one out before buying it, and I thought it was a great game at first. That wore off quickly, though, and now I haven't touched it in a long time. There's way too little on offer, and what's there doesn't stay enjoyable very long. The coop is more annoying than anything because you keep accidentally throwing each other around which often results in lost lives in areas where you can't fall off the screen. I sort of wish I could return this one.

Ecco the Dolphin - 95%
So many people dislike this game, but I absolutely adore it. It's massive and very slow paced, so you have to be in the mood to put an hour or more into exploring and completing a single level before playing. All of this pays off though because of the amazing artistic direction, deep, involving story, and the astounding sense of accomplishment after beating a level. It's like they crossed a point and click adventure with Contra, yet it never becomes frustrating. You have no time limit and unlimited lives, so the farthest back you'll ever be sent is to the beginning of the level. Exploration and trial and error are key, as well as patience.

My only complaint is that it's the Genesis version and not the SEGA CD version, which had a much better soundtrack.

Ecco: The Tides of Time - UNRATED
I haven't given a percentage to this one because I only downloaded to save myself the trouble of doing it later. I fully intend to beat the first game before I start the sequel. However, I have messed around in the first level just to get a feel for it.

Remember that amazing art I talked about in the first game? Well, it's vastly improved here. It's stunning, really. And I really like how they incorporated the choosing of difficulty levels into the gameplay. They took the beginning menu system from the first game (swim right for a new game, swim left to enter the password screen) and allowed you to now choose the difficulty level while maintaining the same degree of immersion. Just swim right for the easiest mode; swim upwards through the narrow pass for medium; and break the spiked shells above you for hard mode. It's really brilliant how they made the difficulty of entering each mode proportionate to the difficulty level you're selecting.

I'll list them in the order I bought them. :)

Super Mario 64 - 9/10
I really don't know what prompted my to get this. I already had the N64 & DS versions. But, then again, it's a fantastic game, so why not buy it again? XD

F-Zero - 7.5/10
This game is a lot of fun. Kind of bland, but still fun. But it's also pretty hard, at least for me. I'll admit, I have stopped out of pure frustration. But, it's still one of those games where, despite the difficulty, you just have to keep playing...

Super Mario Bros. - 8.5/10
I'm not gonna lie; I never played SMB before this. It was before my time. And I just never got around to getting any of the remakes or ports. But, when I played it, it just didn't live up to the hype. Sure, it's great, but a slight letdown. Still, well worth $5.

Super Castlevania IV - 8/10
I'm not really too big on the occult. Well, I like Charmed, but that's about the extent of it. Nevertheless, when this game out on the VC, my friend urged me to get it. I wasn't disappointed. It's a lot of fun, seriously. Not one of my favorite platformers, but most certainly not one of my disliked.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 10/10
To the people who claim OoT is the best Zelda: break out your SNES and educate yourselves. OoT is a classic and is one of the best games of all time, but ALttP is just better. I'd never played it before I downloaded it, despite the GBA remake being easily available, but this is most certainly the best Zelda. My favorite Zelda? No, that's Minish Cap. But as far as quality, story, gameplay, music, and everything else goes, ALttP is by far the best.

Super Mario World - 9/10
Now this, this lived up to the hype. Granted, I didn't really hype myself up for this one prior to getting it, but it was still great. Riding Yoshi was a great element to the gameplay, and I loved seeing the Koopalings for once.

Gunstar Heroes - 8.5/10
I played Gunstar Super Heroes a while before getting this, and I loved it. But as good as that one was, the original was just better. Yes, it was hard at times (at least for me; if it wasn't for you, laugh at me all you want), but it was still a fantastic game. The hype surrounding this game is well deserved.

Star Fox 64 - 8.9/10
DO A BARREL ROLL! *cough* Erm, yeah... >_> This was my first Star Fox game, and reliving it on the VC is amazing. Everything looks better than ever, and the gameplay was just as I remembered. This is by far the best Star Fox game, if only they'd make more like these! I would've scored it a nine, but there's just one problem: no rumble. D:

Kid Icarus - 8.5/10
Considering all the good things I'd heard about this game, I went in expecting the best thing since sliced bread. Sadly, sliced bread is still the bigger bang. Kid Icarus is a wonderful game, and I enjoyed every second of it. Even though it is REALLY FRUSTRATING at times. It's my favorite NES game, even though I've technically only played 4, none of which on the original system (2 GBA, 2 VC).

Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Great:
ActRaiser

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
The Legend of Zelda
ToeJam & Earl

Very Good:
Kid Chameleon
Kirby's Adventure
Ristar
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Good:
Ecco the Dolphin
Gunstar Heroes
Wonder Boy in Monster World

Okay:
Bomberman '93
Bonk's Adventure
Columns
Kid Icarus

Donkey Kong Country: 8.5
Donkey Kong Country 2: 8.5
Donkey Kong Country 3: 7.5
Paper Mario: 9.5
River City Ransom: 9
Sim City: 6
Super Castlevania IV: 6
Sonic the Hedgehog 3: 7
Kirby and the Crystal Shards: 6.5

Only went with .5. It's a lot easier to rate games. Everyone loves Super Castlevania IV, but I didn't like it at all. I'd like to get more VC games, but I don't have the money right now. Plus anything I would get right now would be WiiWare and that's going to take up all the memory on my Wii.
