HD-DVD for Xbox360

HD-DVD for Xbox360

Postby madgamer » 05 Jan 2006 13:20

Well, its official. Microsoft is releasing an external HD-DVD drive for the Xbox360 sometime this year. So not only do people have to pay the ridiculously high price for the unit, they have to buy this additional drive which will not be cheap. AND You know that Halo 3 will most likely be on an HD-DVD to make people buy this drive....

But in a way at least it will help slow down Blu-Ray. Its not like I have to pay for it :P

i find it stupid to make something that people have buy extra to play certain games that should be playable on the basic system.
Call me at 1-800-bull@#$% when Sony knows how to make a system.

Exactly how I feel. Maybe they will start shipping them with the drive built-in eventually. I know that HD-DVD is backward compatible with standard DVD (BlueRay is not!).

And I bet the PS3 will not play regular DVDs.. only BluRay movies. Like the PSP only plays UMD's. I doubt they would get many converts like that...

I read somewhere that you could also just put your HD-DVD into your regular dvdplayer and then you could watch the movie, but no HD of course. I don't know about you people, but from a consumers place, the HD-DVD got my vote for the next generation DVD

Xbox 360 won't use HD-DVD for games.

It's external, it's not forced on anyone to adopt the new technology.

And no, HD-DVD cannot be played on a normal DVD player. HD-DVD uses a higher frequency laser.

The misinformation is just plain silly. Know the facts or pipe up.

YA, M$ said early on, it wouldn't be a game medium on 360, it would be a connected movie player.

Doesn't mean they/someone wouldn't make games for it though.

Its a fact that many Xbox 360 games are running out of space on the regular DVDs and are forced to use multipled discs. Since HD-DVDs can hold a lot more I would imagine a game as big as Halo 3 needing it. But maybe they won't do that, who knows... but it seems like a Microsoft-like thing to do though.

And no to my knowledge no price was announced.

So someone's going to release a game that only a fraction of people can even play on their system? I don't think so.

That's precisely the reason games aren't going to utilize the HDD.

a price wasn't anounced, but they estimated the product to exceed $300. You will wind up paying the same price as the 360

Halo 3 is just shy of being gold, and from the the rumor mill, it is supposed to be on normal dvd.

what games need more than 1 disc?

To my knowledge, and its still in its a vary vague rumor, i believe elder scroll is the only game which might need more than 1 disc. (or just a dual sided disc.)

I don't mind using multiple discs, you rarely switch discs anyway.

To all RE4 players how long did it take you to switch?

And once again, it's an accessory. It's like the gameboy player. It is not needed for normal console gameplay.

Yea, ok. I see your point, it could just be for HD movies but then why is it an Xbox accessory? For $300 you can buy an regular Toshiba HD-DVD player. But I guess we'll just have to.... well you know the rest ;)

Listen, i cannot, i repeat, cannot stand people like you.

Before you reply just to add your two cents, take a second to read.

In my post I said "i believe elder scroll is the only game which might need more than 1 disc"

Geez, calm down Egress. This is just friendly conversation and speculation here. And I don't think he was refering to your post, "they" could be anyone.

I was just saying its a possiblity that it could be an upgrade of the current drive. They never said anything against it to my knowledge. I just wanted to bring up the topic for discussion not flaming.

I am impressed by the abundance of ignorance. The HD DVD Player add-on is meant to play movies only, not games. They wouldn't make someone pay such a high price for the console, only to have to pay even more just to be able to play specific games. And the difference between DVD-9 and HD DVD is that DVD-9 uses a red laser, which has a wavelength of 700 nm, and HD DVD uses a blue laser, which has a wavelength of 480 nm. The shorter wavelength means it is able to store more data on a disc to put it simple.

As well, Microsoft has already said that if Blu-Ray is the victor, then they will release a Blu-Ray add-on.
