Most underrated game you ever played

Postby TheLastBlade » 07 Dec 2011 20:48

Mines would be Tales of Symphonia. I felt like this game was namco's real success in the tales series (aside from xillia). It's story is cliche but in a good way, it has a battle system for all, and all that stuff. This was the only tales game I took seriously..... The rest after is garbage.
Bang.

See you, Space Cowboy...

I loved Tales of Symphonia, also Phantasia was really good too. I have Legendia, but wasn't too impressed with it. I plan on getting Tales of the Abyss for 3DS, I am hoping it will be good.
I don't know what my most underrated game would be. Maybe Rygar for NES, I absolutely love that game, but it's not something I hear mentioned too much. Some others off the top of my head (not really sure what qualifies as underrated, but ones I don't hear about often that I liked a lot) Pokemon Snap (N64), Pac-Man VS. (Gamecube), I-Ninja (gamecube), Super Turrican (SNES), The Legendary Starfy (DS), Blast Corps (N64), Grandia 2 (Dreamcast), Skies of Arcadia (Gamecube, Dreamcast), Crazy Taxi (Gamecube, Dreamcast), Excite Truck (Wii). I also loved both Resident Evil Chronicles games for Wii, even though they seem to get looked down on for being on rails light gun games. Was Earthbound underrated? Because it shouldn't be.

Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing
- This game averages about a 7-7.5. It's easily an 8.5-9. It's the best Kart racer released in a LONG time.

Folklore
- I love this game. The alternating storylines, the emphasis on exploration and collecting. It has a great atmosphere and music score. It's awesome.
Mega Man 9 isn't hard, you're just not paying attention

For me, probably M.C. Kids, the McDonald's game on the NES that AVGN taught everyone to hate. It's a GOOD SMB3-clone that has no powerups, just the ability to grab blocks/snow/ash and throw it at enemies. Levels can be easily beaten, but it takes some time and searching to find the 'puzzle blocks' in each stage. On top of that, the game only requires you to find just a few of each World's puzzle cards before allowing you to move on, meaning that you can either blow through the game in an hour, or(as there is no save feature) spend the day finding all the puzzle cards, unlock the hidden world, and do some tougher platforming stages after that. It really has a lot going for it despite being so trodden down.

Aside from that, Body Harvest on the N64 is pretty underrated despite how great it can be, and I was surprised how well Peter Jackson's King Kong held up. Skies of Arcadia Legends is a great RPG that gets overlooked as well.

All of this.

I'm quite fond of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 despite the flak they get, I really should scope them out again.

SA1&2 get flak? I mean I know RMC says he doesn't really like any of the 3D Sonic games, especially after receiving death-threats for not liking Shadow the Hedgehog(although I kinda liked the game myself, I at least respect his opinion), but I didn't know other people are starting to underrate those two games. Especially since they're still the best examples of 3D-Sonic games to date, really.

For that matter, I loved SA2 for it's longevity. Getting all 'A-Ranks(except for the Chao's)' on the Dreamcast version was one of the most challenging things I've done in a game, to the point that I haven't really tried/done-it-yet for the Gamecube version. It was a GREAT way of extending the life of the game, and the best achievement before achievements were a dirty household term.

Maybe Shadow the Hedgehog should be one of my most underrated games just because everyone automatically hates it. I just like that it fixed some of the blatant rail-grinding bugs that Sonic Heroes was plagued with, and for the most part, auto-targeting with guns felt natural and played decent...although I hear the PS2 version was heavily bugged. The only thing I dislike is that it's a graphically dark/depressing game, and it STILL doesn't give a real explanation on how Shadow survived, or which version of the timeline you played was 'the real timeline' or whatever. But straight-up gameplay-wise, it was still a decent game.

Then again, I could probably just say "Ecco the Dolphin One, Two, and Dreamcast' and that'd be the most underrated games as well. Such good times.

Definitely Sonic 06. It was the closest thing to a third Sonic Adventure we ever got, and I loved it. Sure, there were valid complaints in the glitches, story, and loading times, but the gameplay itself was good old fashioned Sonic 3D platforming that was pulled off very well. The music wasn't bad either, keeping up with Sonic tradition. Also, I personally really liked the overworld in Sonic Adventure, it was a nice way to break up the action. I was upset when nothing of the sort appeared in its sequel, but Sonic 06 brought it back and executed it well, in my opinion. While I didn't enjoy many of the other 3D Sonic games(Sonic Heroes, Shadow, Sonic Storybooks, etc.) Sonic 06 is a game I can say I really like.

I'd say maybe Wario Land on the Virtual Boy. Well...maybe it isn't underrated as much as it is underplayed because people would rather continue thinking the Virtual Boy had absolutely nothing good on it and all it was good for was giving people headaches.

I haven't played it since 2004 or 2005, but it's fun and I will always have a spot reserved for it in my Top 10 favorite games list.

Final Fantasy Mystic quest this game is what a zelda game would feel like if it was a turn based rpg.
Idk why so many people dislike this game the only flaw i can think of about it you can't say about most final fantasy games is it's ridicolusly easy.
But really it's one thing to enjoy a game when it challenges you it's quite another thing when you avoid games that don't challenge you.
Why? because i noticed many challenge gamers are constantly wanting more challenge and eventually this cycle will lead to know game being hard enough which will lead to them not playing games period.
My favorite zelda game is Twilight Princess and Jirachi is my favorite pokemon <3 skype:SSBBKING

I hated it because it was just generic and super super easy. Also, we got that instead of FF5.

I see what you mean, but that was the game that got me into RPG's in the first place. I bought it off a friend when I was in 8th grade. I thought it was really fun at the time, I still have it but I haven't played it since. I do remember it being very easy though. But if it weren't for that I probably wouldn't have ever played one of my favorite games of all time, Final Fantasy III (VI).

metroid other m, it has a 78 (which means its good - very good) on gamerankings which I agree with but people go on about this game as if it's the biggest tragedy since E.T, big up the bad 25% of the game and completely ignore everything that was great about it.

I could never stay into any of the Saga Frontier games. I was super bored, and the world was way too open. Sometimes there are no clues as to what to do next, like an old NES RPG...but even Dragon Quest gave you direction.

For me I'd say it was The World Ends With You. This game was never on my radar of games to play since I never heard of it or its existence but once I saw it in a trailer for KH: 3D and heard positive things from people who've played I thought I'd give this game a shot. I was hesitate a couple of times to buy it but when I finally did buy it and played it after awhile I just knew I had something special. The story, gameplay, characters, all of it drew me in. I haven't played such a fascinating game like this in so long. I love it and am still playing it to this day. (Yesterday in fact ;) ) I've heard from time to time that this game is one of many gems in the DS library so hearing that I can definitely agree 100%. Many people should give this game give it a try. You never know, you may just be taken back by its amazement like I did once you engage yourself in the experience.

I don't know if visual novels count, but "Tears 9, 10" was a great visual novel that deserves attention. It's on the app store, and it's on sale now! Go grab it!

I've enjoyed every 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game up to Secret Rings (except Sonic 06 and Black Knight since I've never played them). Despite some of their criticisms, I loved them. Sonic Heroes was still fun even if that's where the series started declining. I still play Shadow the Hedgehog to this day because of all the different branching paths you can take. Secret Rings took a little while to get into but I still enjoyed it. I also love Sonic 3D Blast and Sonic R and I don't understand why everybody gives them crap. Sonic Riders is awesome, and actually just played through it again not too long ago. Zero Gravity was okay, but not as good, and I've never played Free Riders. However, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are still my favorite 3D Sonic games (although I prefer 2 - specifically the Gamecube version).
Check out The Tails and Sonic Show! It's awesome ^_^

That's easy Lost Kingdoms for the Nintendo GameCube (known as Rune in Japan). It is a neat little RPG that uses cards in its combat system. not only that, but it has a very personal connection to me as it made such a strong impression on me when I rented it as a kid, even though I didn't even come close to beating it! So about a decade later I spend a few good hours searching for it online, as by then I had forgotten the name, found it then bought a used copy. When I got it I played it all the way through and had a blast! Since then I've been picking up any From Software game I could get my hands on.

I thought I'd also give a shout out to Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. I don't know if it really counts as underrated, but I haven't really heard a lot of people talk about it and it is also a game I had loads of fun with as a child.

I agree with Motherbrain (that's a first) about Other M. It's rated highly by professional reviewers, but trashed by Metroid über-fans.

I'm going to throw Geist into the ring. It's a very unique FPS/FPA that does things I have never seen before or since in a video game. It was ultimately let down by poor AI and a rushed development cycle, but it's originality in a stale genre should give it a place on the under rated list.

Also Odama on Gamecube, the voice controlled pinball / battlefield game. It's like a pinball table but there are two armies fighting on it. It's your job to give your army orders as to what to do while using the "pinball" as a weapon against your opponent. It's a bit clunky and the graphics are rough, but if you give it a chance it's a really fun game.

I tried out Geist not to long ago and I agree. I wouldn't say it is a good game, but I will say that there were some points in Geist where I was very impressed with. The level were you free Bryson, I think, did an excellent job in delivering narrative in the game without losing the player's interest. It'd be interesting to see what they'd do with a sequel, hopefully then they could iron out some of the issues holding back the game.

FFMQ did do quite a few things well. The game plays off of the environment more than any other JRPG I played at the time. Zelda pretty much, like you said. You can actually see the damage you do to monsters as their bodies deteriorate, giving you feedback. Soundtrack was rockin' too. FFMQ's battle theme is one of my favorite video game tunes ever.

Too bad it was developed by a team that was used to making Game Boy games and made the original FFII so weird they didn't bring it over until much later. Yeah, sales and reviews weren't so great. I don't to mean to sound like a jerk but that's what Square gets for going with a marketing decision instead of making a game that appeals universally.

Any of the Bomberman titles on N64, Bomberman 64 was a very unique platformer with spectacular music! It did the whole jump without a jump button before Zelda OoT, I'll have you know! If there is one game I want on the Wii VC its this one!

Bomberman Hero, I think its a real gem among 3D platformers. The story is pretty basic (its basically Star Wars Ep 4), but IMO the gameplay though kinda floaty is solid, and the levels are pretty varied. One stage your fighting evil clowns, the next your snowboarding down a mountain.

Bomberman 64 2 was really neat too. Lots of good ideas, and a pretty solid story with a fair amount of choice from the player!
