SA1 has a lot of camera problems, the story is stupid and the gameplay is not Mario 64 but it's kind of cool and fresh. SA2 is not a good Sonic at all, it's maybee a good game but not a great Sonic game! The magic from SA1 has gone from 2. Even Colors is not a great Sonic, the gameplay, like in SA1 and 2, is not that perfect. Keep in mind Sonic is SEGA's answer to Mario so it should be at least equal in everyway or better, the genesis games are other the top, not the 3d ones (even if i had a lot of fun with Colors).

I'm not very fond of the Genesis games either. Granted they're good, but they're not something I would play over and over.

I think an underrated game I've played is Goemon's Great Adventure... I don't know, it's not a game that has been talked in most sites...

Claymates for SNES. I was obsessed with that game when I was little but I don't think it was very popular. Would love to see an eShop release, eventually.

Super Mario RPG!!!!!!!!!!
That game is the absolute BEST game i have ever played, yet whenever i mention it, no one knows what the heck i'm talking about! All my friends say they're Mario fans, but they never played it.

Has anyone here ever played it?

Yeah I've played it, but never beat it due to a problem with the cart I was using. It is definitely a good game, but I'm not sure I would label it as underrated.

well, maybe it's not underrated... it's just that vitually no one my age has heard of it, so i figured it was underrated. my generation is too young to know about the SNES, which sucks because it's my favorite system.

Fair enough, although that still somewhat surprises me considering how prevalent the retro-gaming community is even in mainstream gaming. Personally, I can't get enough of the 3DS and Wii's virtual console or the PS1 classics on PSN.

Star Fox Adventures.

If the game didn't have the star fox universe on him, it would get more love and better scores in reviews.
3 basis steps to improves nintendo´s activities:

- Iwata should be take off from the presidency;
- Reggie should be put in some place out of NOA's presidency;
-Miyamoto should take a slap of sense to start caring again for the hardcore gamers.

MAGNUS-8M wrote:For me, probably M.C. Kids, the McDonald's game on the NES that AVGN taught everyone to hate. It's a GOOD SMB3-clone that has no powerups, just the ability to grab blocks/snow/ash and throw it at enemies. Levels can be easily beaten, but it takes some time and searching to find the 'puzzle blocks' in each stage. On top of that, the game only requires you to find just a few of each World's puzzle cards before allowing you to move on, meaning that you can either blow through the game in an hour, or(as there is no save feature) spend the day finding all the puzzle cards, unlock the hidden world, and do some tougher platforming stages after that. It really has a lot going for it despite being so trodden down.

The joke in there, is that AVGN and his friend/collaborator Mike have admitted at a convention, that that episode was hard to come up with shovel for, and that it was one of his least favorite, simply because it IS actually a pretty decent game. They said that basically, the only reason they did it was because it would be funny to make fun how ridiculous it is for a game to be based off of something like McDonald's. But AVGN doesn't actually hate all the games he bitches about...that's why it's a character he's portraying. Another good example is Castlevania 2, which he says he actually really likes, but there is indeed so much legit shovel you can bitch about that game for.

But yes, I guess maybe there are different kinds of "underrated". I'd say, taking inspiration from you, that two distinct categories could be:

1. Games that general gamer consensus seem to think sucks, when in reality they're pretty good.

Games that could easily fit this category, to me, would include: Castlevania 2, Zelda 2, M.C. Kids, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, Yo Noid!, FFCC: The Crystal Bearers as just a few key examples.

2. Games that are severely underrated simply because few people have actually bothered playing them.

Games that could easily fit this category, to me, would include: Mushroom Men, The Munchables, The Kore Gang, Little King's Story, etc. as just Wii examples of such games. There are too many to really count.

As for me, personally? My MOST underrated game I've ever played? That's a damn tough question. I guess I'd go with the second category for that, perhaps. And even then...I dunno. Mushroom Men is a good candidate, because I don't think many people even gave it a chance, as if they had, they would have seen that it is a fun and unique little action game. Two games that I really enjoyed as a kid on the NES, that many people probably haven't played, are Monster Party and Totally Rad. Both are really "out there", oddball games, but both are also very high quality and fun. Another that is actually available on VC, is a game by Natsume called "Shadow of the Ninja". It's a really good game, obviously inspired by Ninja Gaiden, but as good as those games are, I actually feel SotN is a slightly better game, due to tighter controls, and not SO unforgivable a difficulty. It's an excellent game, and I think more people should try it.

Another stand out would be Tetrisphere on N64. A really great take on the Tetris concept, but with a 3D sphere, it had a really good soundtrack, and was a puzzle game that actually made you think. Good stuff.

But honestly, there's probably dozens of games I've played and liked that most people haven't, so the list could get quite long....

The Wii and DS are chock full of underrated games, to be perfectly honest. I can't even begin to list them all.

There was a huge point in the Wii's life where a ton of amazing niche titles came out that nobody wanted to buy, despite raging they wanted games but what they were actually saying was "We want the big games on PS3 and 360" not "We want good core games", so nobody bought any of the true gems that exist on Wii simply because "Oh, well, they're niche" and then tried saying they sold bad because they were not as good.

I don't know what my most underrated game is. Will have to get back to that. Maybe Billy Hatcher & The Giant Egg? I loved that game. Also the Magic Pengel/Graffiti Kingdom games.

Ah man, this a million times. There are a lot of games that somehow got sucked into a void of "it sucks" but honestly don't. There are a lot of games that auto-"suck" simply because they are licensed, but this mainly happens to games that are "different", which is hilarious.

People always cry out for "Why won't the developers change up the formula? We want a different kind of game!" yet whenever they do everyone screams that the game ruined everything about the originals for not being exactly the same. Or they are like IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!, even though they were just upset about it being stale. Then they wonder why they don't change it up again later, after the changed game was so ill-received by indecisive brats.

But in the NES days, there were a lot of games like Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2 that changed up the formula immediately. Most of the people who seem to hate those games, though, tend to be people who didn't play them when they came out and have since played all of the games that were more similar to Castlevania 1 or Zelda 1, so to them, it's an archaic abomination. In reality, they both brought a lot to the table and were amazing, but they had some broken features (like how you lose all experience and stuff, destroying hours of playing).

I think the most underrated game I've ever played is Magical Starsign, loved the characters and the story.

And Bomberman Hero and Battalion Wars 2 deserve an honorable mention as well.

Harley's Humongous Adventure for the SNES. This game is a lot of fun, with colorful backgrouds and an interesting story.

Would Ghost Trick count as underrated? I love that game, yet it doesn't seem like too many people know about it.

I'd say it's overlooked, not overrated. It seems that those who've played it have positive things to say about their experiences with it, including myself.
It'd be great if we can get this game on the 3DS eShop. But not every game deserve a second chance, though, so I don't want to see every ugly shovelware title making re-appearances (it's already started to happen, unfortunately).

I'm also crossing my fingers for that second Miles Edgeworth game, Ace Attorney Investigations 2.

SSX Blur. I don't get why this gets ignored so much. Once you got the hang of the controls it wasn't hard, it was a lot of fun, looked really good on the Wii. Yet when people talk about SSX it's like it never even existed.

I guess people compare it to SSX Tricky and SSX 3 on older consoles, because they had characters with voices and personality, lots of extras, and no motion controls.

With Blur, the motion controls cannot be completely turned off. You have to tilt for sharper turns and draw shapes in the air for big tricks, which are NOT 100% responsive. Another strike against it is that I don't find it to be a true sequel with many courses reused. Overall, I felt that the game is inferior to be inferior to what's already available, and disappointed me.

It's not a terrible game, but still, with more effort, it could have been a lot better.
I bought this game near its time of release, and it remains the least-played SSX game that I own.

I don't like the more realistic SSX that we have now on the HD consoles. I just want them to go back to SSX Tricky and SSX 3, and create a real sequel to those. Bring back the goofy! Bring back the fun!

I have to vouch for SSX Blur being pretty good, actually. The motion controls really aren't too bad, and mostly come down to execution rather than 'just not being recognized'. But what else can you expect when something that would otherwise be a digital button press is turned into something that takes skill? You expect it to work every time, but when you mess it up, you blame the controls. But after I play long enough and remember how to do them again, I can usually pull them off without too much trouble, which is what you'd expect out of something that takes time to get used to. And personally I really like the motion controls for steering, with edging being assigned to the control stick for finer trimming. There are a few times where it feels like you're patting your head and rubbing your belly, but most times it does work really well. It just takes a lot of effort to really get in to.

I have got one for you: Brothers in Arms DS!
IMHO, it's the best war shooter on the DS and it's not an FPS. The settings, sound and overall sense of choas on the battlefield, is engrossing.

Mega Man X8. After X6 and X7, everyone gave up on the series, but I thought this one was very good. The levels were much bigger and interesting, Axl isn't useless anymore, X doesn't have to be unlocked, you no longer have to rescue Reploids, you can now, instead, collect crystals and use them to buy the upgrades, and the bosses are more interesting to fight.

Yeah, it never came out in Australia either, but I found a euro copy on ebay a few years back.... Doshin would be such a popular "social" game nowdays... best bloody game...and sosurreal and evil!

You do realise that gecko on homebrew will allow you to play it on wii, don't you moldy?.....most definately worth it.

Yes, I do know that, but I am waiting to re-hack my Wii until after I get a Wii U and transfer everything. I don't want to potentially mess up/jeopardize the transfer with homebrew stuff being on the Wii.
