and yes, even Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, are cutting back on UMD releases because of poor sales, reports Variety.

The psp is a failure and will be gone very soon. Especially when sony won't back its own system up. Only if americans(i am american and can't stand its society & culture) weren't so stupid then it would already be gone.
Call me at 1-800-bull@#$% when Sony knows how to make a system.

Debate:

Is this lack of sales due to the PSP being a really bad idea to watch games on;

or

the crappy movies that have come out for it?
Phoenix Clan * Acolyte of Fire * Fire Breather * Prophet of Shai Hulud * Gaijin

Sony needs To Make Games...Not just Sells MOvies. The ratio is like 20:1 with movies to games.

I own a PSP >_>

It looks great if I may say so, it's just that Sony needs to pay it more attention. How much more racing and sport games can we play? And the UMD movies are a total rip-off, pay more to watch a movie on a smaller screen with less options available? I think I'll pass.

To tell you the truth, most of the games I want to play on the PSP are ports from old systems :? Sony needs to wake up.

The early UMD sales were a bit misleading. They were selling well because there was nothing else worth buying on the PSP. Now that there are more games to choose from the movie sales have dropped rapidly.

The problem with UMDs is price. They are a nice little movie format and I have picked up 6-7 of them when I can find them cheap either used or buy one get one free. They are worth it if you like the film and can find them under $10. However, the prices most are being set at are just out of the question. Also if you have the right program and a 1 or 2GB memory stick you can put your own DVDs on to the PSP and be done with it.

I don't think the UMD format should be completely killed, but Sony should look into selling cheap $99 portable movie only units so other people besides 16-24 year old males are buying the movies and also adding support so the UMDs can also be played on regular TVs. That and getting the prices down to a more reasonable $10 a disc will help them develop a nice little portable movie format into something viable.

I still prefer UMD movies to Sony's other idea of selling downloadable movies. At least with UMDs I can lend them to friends and sell them when I am tired of them. With downloadable movies you are restricted by Sony when, where and how you watch the movie and it has no resell value.

¡¿Que?!

The PSP is cutting back it's movies?! But how else will the PSP live? There has to be something that makes a PSP worth buying!

I think Sony did well in launching the PSP, but after that they completely lost it. Since the launch most games were either copy-and-pasted onto UMD from the PS2 or extremely mediocore. On the other hand you can't count Sony out yet, they still have been able to get a sizable chunk of the market. Not only that but the system is still selling mainly on brand. Even in the US it neck and neck with the behemoth that is the Nintendo DS. So as the GN crew says: "We will just have to wait and see."
We will not walk in fear, of one of another.

I heard about the PSP powerstone today. I've heard alot about the DC game and this a chance for me to try it out :D . On the other hand, that's another port/remake in the PSP's library :?

The PSP is all about ports. Sadly two of the best ports Tales of Eternia and Breath of Fire III are not being allowed into the US market because SCEA has a strict policy against straight PSone ports. There has to be at least 30% new content or the game is not allowed to be sold. SCEA apparently has no problem with straight PS2 ports as that is most of the PSP library.

The fact is the developers refuse to spend big money on PSP development so ports is about all the system is going to get. That and a few cheap to develop original games like Lumines and Exit. The PSP is not dead and its still worth owning for its multimedia features (that screen is made for watching movies on), but it will never compete as a game system especially in Japan where they have not been fooled by the failure of the game library.

Yeah, I mean almost all of the games are ports anyways. The only reason I'd want a PSP is for the new Katamari game.
