[RUMOR] Xbox 360 price drop?

Postby Edjarosu » 13 Jul 2007 17:03

According to these links, Microsoft will be putting a price drop on the Xbox 360 that would put the Core setup to $50 less than the Wii, the Premium to only $50 more, and the Elite to $150 more.

It's debatable as to whether or not this would affect sales to casual gamers, but I'm sure it would affect sales significantly anyway. I know I'd pick up either a Premium or Core console at those prices.

It's unconfirmed thus far, but still, it'll be very interesting to see where it goes.

It's not hard for Nintendo to do a drop. If they wanted I guess they could have made $100. Even with an X360 price drop I just don't see me buying it unless they created another version of X360 (like GBA SP, PSOne, PSTwo, DS Lite, etc) with all the added features to match PS3 and release that for $400.

I don't know if they'll drop the price after Halo 3, since it'll most likely be a major system seller; or if they'll drop the price before in an effort to sell more of systems and copies of Halo 3.

I won't be buying one before the price drops, though, because I know it'll happen fairly soon.

I also heard that when the prices dropped, the Elite would go down to $400, since it's not selling as well as they thought it would.

however, halo 3 could be a real let down to all its fans and then microsoft would drop the price as everyone who bought one for halo will be selling theirs to other people meaning microsoft make no money, so they drop the price so people buy the console of them (not that they are making any money sellin the consoles themselves!)

I didn't know about the X360 Elite. $500? That's terrible compared to PS3 for $500. They're better off re-bundling and losing more.

$50 less than the Wii? I'd buy one for that.

the 360 is getting a price drop in a month that will make the premium cosole 350 and the elite 400. i think this is good so that halo buyers have a chance to get the elite at a good price. also stevey wonder this halo i doubt will be a let down to the fans...becuase the head of bungie did say that they rushed the halo 2 game and that the multiplayer and single player were a big let down. he even quotes "I ****ing can't play halo 2 multiplayer" becuase of all the things they left out of the weeks of polishing the missed. he did also say that the more time and better consloe they have been working on will definatly make halo 3 a lot better.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm thinking price cuts are still a year out.

some say that the price drop is a response to the Sony PS3 price drop...

Xbox 360 Price Drop Official

Postby thewster » 07 Aug 2007 12:40

Article (You can also find it on the Wii News Channel)

Basically the gist of it is that...

The core goes from $299 to $279.
The premium goes from $399 to $349.
Finally, the Elite goes from $499 to $449

A pretty smart move on the part of Microsoft IMO. They can get all the broken 360s out so they can start bringing in the good ones.

Edit - What I meant by a smart move is that this price drop will get the faulty ones off the shelves so they can start stocking new ones. Maybe not the smartest decision, but I like it :)

That wouldn't be a smart move at all. If they sell off a bunch of faulty systems, they're going to be working to repair them all within a year.

I have lost a lot of faith that Microsoft will be able to push Sony to the side this generation. They could've done it easily. They had a year's head start and were selling for a full $200 less for their top "SKU". The 360 is even pretty comparable to the PS3 where power is concerned. But they fumbled bad. It's like they dropped the ball, tripped over it, landed in a pile of crap, and then all the other players tripped on them and dog piled on top.

The price drop is only to maintain a competitive image. Sony "drops" their price, Microsoft has to do the same. With all of their hardware problems, they need to maintain every edge that they can over Sony.

That's not the entire reason, though. It's already been out for 2 years, so a price drop would've happened soon, anyway.
