What do you want in the next 2D Mario game?

Postby Battlestriker123 » 27 Jan 2012 03:00

According to Iwata: "we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year."

What do you guys want in the next 2D Mario game? Personally, I say throw out the entire NSMB formula and start over from scratch. I want a more action-oriented Mario sidescroller, one similar to the online flash game "Super Mario 63". I want to dive, do backflips, and make crazy somersaults in the new Mario sidescroller. That would just be amazing.

Yeah. That's probably never going to happen.

What do you guys think? You want another NSMB styled 2D sidescroller on the 3DS? Or something completely different?

I would love for your idea to happen. Kinda want a little break from the NSMB formula. I'm tired of it.

I'm more intrigued with who or what team are making this game, I was very certain that a 2D Mario game was being made for the release of Wii U, and then there is the people who make 3D Mario. if this title is ready to come out in a years time then there has already been a lot of work done on it already.

But for a new 2D Mario I would like to see them do away with the NSMB style, to me those games always seemed to be a bit washed out in looks, keep the very bright rich colours and style that SM3DL and Mario Galaxy had but in 2D glory.

Have a World-map like Super Mario World, tons of secrets, Yoshi, unique/crazy bosses, Golden flag status like SM3DL, more star-coins to find, at least 5 of them. levels that focus going in and out of backgrounds much like Donkey Kong Country Returns did.

What I want? Let see:

Spoiler:
Instead of Mario, I want a blonde woman in a futuristic armor
Instead of goombas, I want purple spiky beetles
Instead of koopas, I want bipedal lobsters that fire lasers
Instead of the mushroom kindgon, I want an alien planet
Instead of Bowser, I want a big and evil space dragon that can fly
And anything that has something to do with the mario franchise removed in favor of more alien stuffs
Oh and the game should be named after a flying mortal jellyfish.

Being real now:

* A hub world like SM64
* Multiple paths for every level
* Galaxy like level design (unique levels)
* More unlockable characters with unique phisics each
* Most of SM64 moveset
* Lenghty levels

hub world. I want super high quality sprites instead of polys for my 2d game, but I can deal.

Yeah, I'm really hoping the NSMB/W candy-pop crap is out. It was neat the first time, but it was just so bare bones and basic, it just didn't feel like a 'new' Mario game... just a remix of all the mediocre parts of old stuff, but with none of the charm. It was like going back to the 'pre-rendered 3D is awesome!' days of the Genesis and SNES era... as if the visual style of NSMB/W was its defining point, and all of the actual gameplay just happened to be there to support the visuals.

SMB3 on the other hand seemed much better balanced.. rather than being a game that was trying to simulate something old but with 'new graphics', its visual style fit its capabilities and the music fit the environment very well. It wasn't sitting on top of decades of success and looking down where it used to be and felt the need to make something nostalgic, it was within its own element and going forward, and it didn't feel convoluted and forced and specially made. It's kind of hard to describe, but it feels like SMB3's collective of level design, art style, and music was 'whole', made for itself, built for itself, and well fitted to itself.

That's what I'd like to see... I want Nintendo to sort of be more 'down to earth' about it.. rather than being in the front seat and looking back, I want them in the back seat looking forward. I want them to be serious about it. These days, making a Mario game means making something kooky and comical and a general flight of fantasy, but back in the day it felt more like they were doing what was the best way of showing things on their systems. They made castles and forts with black backgrounds because they had to, but they utilized it by making the environment feel dark and moody, and the music fit with it. Now if they do those sorts of things, they either over dramatize it, or add goofy/kooky bits to it to soften the mood.

Sure, I don't want overly-realistic-Mario-because-it-fits-the-power-of-the-system or anything, but the difference I feel between the variety of moods in SMB3's levels is really different from the new games, and I just wish it'd match the 'feel' the older games had without trying to create a fake-nostalgia OF the old games.

Also sure, neat power ups, secret exits and all that. But I'd rather they focus first on giving back that sense that SMB3 first had without overdoing the forced-nostalgia thing.

I agree with most of you: I was never a fan of the NSMB style. I felt it was very repetitive and was trying more to feed into nostalgia rather than actually furthering the 2D gameplay. I'd like to see something that stays true to the more successful games in the series(i.e. SMB 3 and SMW) in that it eschews linearity in favor of grand world maps with secrets to explore and an array of powerups to find.
That said, I think the game could benefit even more if it were to advance the formula in some ways rather than completely adhere to it. I want to see more creative mechanics. Completely new bosses. Not to mention more interesting ways to take advantage of the system, such as more frequent implementation of 3D for platforming sections and better use of streetpass(maybe racing other player's ghosts for level times?) Give me at least some of this, and I'll be interested.

- no hub world. i actually find them annoying and just a waste of time and effort having to navigate to the stuff i actually want to do, which is play. a simple map (or linear progression like SMB1 or 2) is the most efficient way to do this.
- sprites. nsmb was at first a good, fresh take on things, but honestly, for a 2D game, sprites still look better to me, and every game that used a 3D mario felt just a bit heavier/sluggish compared to the control of a sprite-based character.
- kuribo's shoe.
- i actually wouldn't mind some of the ideas from super paper mario to show up, be it the visual style, or the switching between dimensions.
- AR levels or features.
- an extensible architecture that allows for either downloadable or street/spotpass features to get new or remixed levels
- playable peach.

it's surprisingly difficult to make good levels. not that the average person couldn't do it, but most probably wouldn't bother, because it's a lot of work.

though i think it's a cool idea for a feature that i would support.

imagine some of those crazy self-playing levels on youtube, but this time, supported by an official level editor, and even a way to upload/feature your creations on a site (like flipnote). dick levels be damned.

All I need is a playable Mario in the game, I could care less what it looks like, unlike countless others on internet forums, who whine about such unimportant things.

Just don't buy the game if you don't like the way it looks, simple no?

an online hub with an auto recommendation system for particularly well designed or awesome levels

if MediaMolecule can do it then Nintendo can do it

although I'm not sure I'd dig a Super Mario with customizable levels personally, between NSMB mods and NSMB Wii mods I've gotten my fix. It'd be a little weird, and you'd think they'd have to go balls out making it a (or the) core feature of the game (something that I feel definitely wouldn't mesh with Mario) or it wouldn't even be worth trying

You clearly haven't seen some of the hacks for Super Mario World on youtube then. Some are just...well, not fair.

I think it really comes down to how good the tools are. LBP has A LOT of tools, but it's really overwhelming to give people that many tools so not many people can make quality levels. With Mario, the game is really simple so not much would be needed to craft good ones. Plus, it controls countries better than LBP.

How awesome would a new Mario with entirely 2D graphics be? It could still incorporate stereoscopy via layering, but dammit I need a new pure 2D Mario platformer in my life. I've had my fill of this 2.5D crap. I don't even dislike NSMB, but two games, and probably a third coming out on Wii U soon -- it's enough. Now imagine if it had fully hand-drawn artwork. I dunno about you kids, but I would *devour* that.

actually, i was referring to some of the stuff you see on youtube, but a lot of that is exceptional stuff; not everyone can or would go to the trouble to make stuff like those. i liked LBP, but never even attempted to make my own level. same thing with brawl. i think the only time i've ever attempted to make a level of something was with mario vs dk 2, because i was bored in an airport and didn't have anything else to do...

I don't think a hub world on a 2D game would really work out too well. I would like a map like Super Mario World. It's big, all connected, and has some secret areas off the beaten path.
I would like a return of flying like the cape or raccoon and tanooki Mario (not the non-flying version from Super Mario Land 3D).
Actually, I think it would be cool if they just threw in every power up from every Mario game. That's a lot of power ups, but it would bring a lot of variety and different ways to play the same levels. They should bring back turnips while they are at it.

I hope they get spice things up in the visual department. NSMB felt so bland compared to past Mario games. I would have liked it if they had gone and used the Galaxy engine. NSMB Wii's levels just felt boring and lifeless. There was hardly anything interesting if you were playing alone. It was good, but it was just another Mario game instead of "WOW a new Mario game!"

Two things:

1. For the game to get the full effort and resources it deserves, and not feel like an afterthought or lower-priority game than the 3D entries.

2. For it not to be a radical departure or reinvention of the 2D series and its mechanics, instead featuring lots of enjoyable new content. I would like more than 2 new general-use power-ups, some inventive new settings rather than just another generic ice world, water world, etc., and I would especially like it if the game scenario didn't involve the Princess being kidnapped for the 38th time.

1) A Bowser's Castle tower defense game where you dispatch enemies to keep Mario from rescuing the Princess.
or
2) A Mario game with more than just Mario & Luigi as playable characters. I would love to be able to be Toad, Peach, Wario, Waluigi, Yoshi without Mario, Birdo and Stan the Bug Man.
We're going to rack up some serious Nintendogs trainer points together!

I would love it if they revisited Super Mario 2 (US) and brought Wart, Mouser, Hydra, etc. back into the picture.

Also another Mario vs Wario title (like 6 Golden Coins) would be nice, with Waluigi and Luigi facing off too. Hmmm, on that note a 4 player battle mode would be sweet in that universe as a side mode. Either way it would be nice to lose Bowser for a game to spice it up.
