Rhythm Thief or Theatrhythm?

Whats better then one screen? Well two screens of course! Current-gen portables inside: DS, Lite, DSi, DSXL, 3DS...

Rhythm Thief or Theatrhythm?

Postby Waluigi » 30 Jun 2012 13:52

Which one should I get first? I do plan on getting both eventually.

In Rhythm Thiefs favor, the demo was loads of fun and I love the variety that was on display, and apparently the demo was just the beginning. I could see myself falling in love with it, and the $30 price point really helps.

In Theatrhythms favor, it looks like it plays sorta like an advanced EBA, and I LOOOOOOVE EBA. The music Is guaranteed to be great and the DLC will certainly extend playtime. $40 is a bit steep though...

What do you guys think?

I personally liked the demo for Rhythm Thief a lot. If you're going to get both anyways, I would suggest that one over Theatrhytm first.

I'm going to get Rhythm Thief since I've had it pre ordered. I really like the gameplay that I tried out in the demo and it kinda reminds me of Professor Layton. Tough call, both games look fantastic! If you're like me, you might want to give the underdog a chance first.

Yeah, they both look great, but I've been meaning to pick up Rhythm Thief since it came out. Theatrhythm will sell well either way, so I might pick that up used to get it a little cheaper, and buy Rhythm Thief new.

Given the scarcity of niche DS games in the past I would pick up Rhythm thief first because theatrythm is a Squeenix title based on Final Fantasy so you will be able to pick it up 6 years from now at your local walmart... rhythm thief might cost $70 on Ebay in 6 months.

Personally I didn't care for the rhythm thief demo. IMO variety is not a replacement for solid gameplay (there's not a lot of variety in Rhythm Heaven or DDR for example). The only part of the demo that I enjoyed was where you hit the buttons to punch dudes...

I wanna play a demo of theatrhythm first, but if it is like EBA/oendan then count me in. I replaced so many screen protectors playing Oendan and EBA...

I'd probably go for Theatrhythm over Rhythm Thief. At least for now. I played the RT demo and while OK, it seemed a bit lacking, and a bit too easy although that might be because they lowered the difficulty for the demo...

Cheers and thanks to all those who supported Rhythm Thief! I have an obvious bias for the game, but just wanted to say that. :)

I finished Rhythm Thief the other day and I can now say it's a fantastic game. For those of you that were concerned about the difficulty it does get harder. My only gripe with the game are the sections that use the motion controls. In my opinion they don't work that well because the movement makes it really difficult to see what moves you have to perform. Regardless of this one thing, it's a great rhythm game with a fantastic story.

If you're a fan of Professor Layton and rhythm games you'll love Rhythm Thief!

... now go get it. ;D

I personally prefer Theatrhythm because I like the old Final Fantasy games especially their music which is ideal for a rhythm game and has given me many sweet memories.
You pathetic little fool. Do you realize who you are dealing with?

Scratch that, I ended up buying Theatrhythm because I saw it for a decent price in stores when I went to look for Rhythm Thief.

It is FANTASTIC. I've already purchased 5 songs of DLC, although there's more than enough content on there already, but it's so fun to play I wanted even more songs. The RPG elements are pretty interesting too (although not entirely necessary; the game can still be played as a standard rhythm game with them completely ignored.) I really recommend Theatrhythm.

@ Poopaloop: You traitor! ;P

I picked up Theatrhythm on sale but I've been thinking about exchanging the game. Is this game just as fun for someone who never played the Final Fantasy games? I'm just worried that this game is only enjoyable if you're a fan of the series. I really wish Nintendo would put the demo on the Eshop in the Americas.

By the way, I think Rhythm Thief is going to be one of those games that is difficult to find. The stores around me didn't get too many copies of the game, and I think people in Europe are already having a difficult time finding the game. So if any of you were interested in getting the game you may want to get it sooner rather than later.

If you like Rhythm games then you'll love it. It's kind of arcadey and after you do so much it starts feeling repetitive, but you get that in most Rhythm games. I think Rhythm Thief is a story where the gameplay mechs are not really focused on music but actions instead.

What I'm trying to say simply is...

Theatrhythm = Arcade-like.

Rhythm Thief = More story/adventure like.

I think it depends on which you prefer or would get more playtime with.
Rhythm Game fanatic. DJMax, Taiko no Tatsujin, DDR, Rockband, Guitar Hero, Rhythm Heaven, Beatmania, and Pop n' Music. Amazing.

I could be wrong, but I spent a lot of time playing Theatrhythm and I think that you would only enjoy the game if you are at least a fan of the music in Final Fantasy. If you don't care at all about the music in Final Fantasy, then you probably won't enjoy Theatrhythm, but that's just my opinion.
