Should I Trade in My 3DS

Postby Steel Diver » 25 Jul 2012 17:36

I am going to be buying a 3DS XL so I was thinking of trading in my 3DS at GameStop since I will at least get 50 bucks. Is it worth it? What reasons do I have to keep it besides nice memories? I will be transferring my games before I trade it in. The money I get for it will be going towards the Wii U. Also it won't be convenient for me to sell it on Ebay or to a friend anything like that. Also I like GameStop so I don't need a list of why GameStop is evil. Thanks!

Yes.

I'd wait for an XL specific deal or something, though, and send your profile/eShop stuff (if any) to the XL when you get it. You'll get more for it.

For example, I traded a DSi in for my 3DS and I got $60 towards the 3DS or something. Trading in a DSi on its own only gets you $25-ish at best.

I keep all my consoles. No point in paying full price just to turn around and sell it for half price a year or so later. The decision is entirely up to you though. We can't make the decision for you. If you do end up selling it I would wait for a specific sale, like MoldyClay suggested. At least you will be getting a bit for for it than otherwise. Still, they are ripping you off no matter what since they will turn around and sell it for a huge profit...

Either keep it, or give it to someone you know who'll use it.

I'm kind of leaning towards trading it in since I have no one I can sell or give it to and I won't be using it any more when I get the XL. I will be saving my Wii when I get the Wii U though.

I don't sell my consoles either. I can't stand it, even if I don't use them. We just happened to have another DSi in our house that nobody cared about (literally was sitting around for like two years and I used it for trading Pokemon over; I think it was originally my sister's but she didn't care about it).

As for a huge profit, it really depends:
For example, I traded them a DSi, which they usually only give you $25-ish for.
I got $60 towards the 3DS for it during the trade-in deal.
They sell refurbished DSi systems for only $69.99. So they're only making $10 off of it.

Granted, obviously you lose money if you bought it new, but you're also wasting money if you keep it and don't use it anyway. And if I traded it in for just the $25, then yeah, they'd be making a lot more.

If he trades in the 3DS now for $50, then yes. They *are* making a ton off of it because they make $100 (they sell it back for $150). It'd be better to wait it out until there is a specific deal or something, that way you're getting way more money back towards the XL and less of a loss overall from the original purchase. The only people that lose all over are those who bought at launch.

Which makes sense. There's no reason to have a 3DS and an XL other than collection purposes. Only reason I have DS and DSi is because my DS's top screen broke, but I still have it since it can play GBA games if I want. DSi also had DSiWare, which was relevant. Both were gifts anyway. Haha.

As for Wii and Wii U, the Wii can still act as a Gamecube. And some of those saves are not going to transfer over (all Online-enabled games, like Brawl), unless they unlock the online saves. You can also hack the Wii and play import games (which is what I intend to do once I get a Wii U. Going to play all the games that didn't make it over here).

If you're into Pokemon, I'd say no.

Save it for trades :)

I know you said you couldn't do ebay, but you could easily get $110 for it on there, probably more.

Also, I went to Gamestop last week to pre-order my 3ds XL + NSMB2 and they said the 3ds's trade value is $70.

$70? Slap to le face. Especially if it's an Ambassador 3DS. Then again, businesses are there to make a profit. I think they charge people $130 for used 3DSes, which isn't too bad I think.

Amazon is currently offering about $90 for trade in on a 3ds, I imagine you could probably sell it to a friend for a fair price as well.

If you transfer your stuff, it's no longer an ambassador 3ds.

If you happen to have an Aqua Blue 3DS then you shouldn't to GameStop. But if its any other color then go right ahead and trade to your hearts content. :p

Last time I checked at GameStop they were giving $50 for 3DS, but now they also have a $25 bonus so I will be trading in. Thanks for the help.
