Will you be going digital for select games?

Postby Waluigi » 01 Aug 2012 01:47

With 3DS, you can buy physical copies of games or digital copies of games (3rd parties depending)

Anyone else going to do both - get some games digitally, some games physical?

Digital - Games that are easier for me to play on the go. I'll be buying all digital games through download cards, to have a physical piece of the game and to maybe save some money:
NSMB2 (100 CN coins, short bursts, replayability, Coin Rush, will be playing for years to come, Mario at all times)
Animal Crossing (Much easier to check up on your world when you don't have to fumble with carts)
Onitore (If it comes to NA, a brain training session every morning without dealing with switching carts, easy to turn on)
Layton Miracle Mask (easy to play in short bursts due to puzzles, plus it makes it easier for me to go in the game and download the daily free puzzle)
Scribblenauts Unlimited (Title Screen + quick puzzle or two, better suited for being there at all times)
New Art Academy (something like this feels more right on a digital platform, lol; will make it easier for drawing or lessons)

Physical - These are all games I feel are better suited for play at home and not on the go, so I'd take a physical copy for of it over a digital one (or it's not available digitally):
Kingdom Hearts 3D
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate
Adventure Time
Fire Emblem

Anyone else going to go the route of both physical and digital, depending on the game?

I wish Nintendo would have done this from the start. Now my collection will look sort of weird with some retail copies and some digital copies. If they had done digital sales from the start I would have bought a 32 GB SD card and gotten all my titles digitally. It is much more convenient to have all your games in one place and not have to carry them around or risk losing them. In my opinion. I will probably only be buying digital from here on out. I realize some people will always want physical copies of their stuff, but I prefer the digital route for everything and not just games. Music, movies, pictures, books, and so on are more convenient to get digitally.

When it comes to Wii U, I'm not sure what I will do. The downloads for those games will be much larger than with 3DS, plus you don't really have to worry about carrying those around. You can always download them overnight, I guess.

Most likely going all retail.

The only real benefits are convenience and no taxes for digital copies. And for some people, that makes more sense.

I personally cannot justify spending $40 on a single something that does not exist, and is less than 500MB, just for convenience. Nor do I have the money to get lots of games new to begin with.

So it is good to have the option for those that are okay with all that and that are apparently switching carts constantly, but I am also never really in a position where I am doing that. Portable as it may be, I am usually playing at home or only playing one game on my handheld at a time.

The only game I may consider it for is Animal Crossing, because that's something I could see being beneficial to just always have available.

Since my plans for NSMB2 have changed, the first game I may get as digital could be the new Animal Crossing. It'll be better for keeping up with everything so I don't need to switch out cards all the time.

I'm not too big on digital but if the game is really rare then I'll go digital. Some games you can't find in stores in your area.

I will always go with physical just because I 100% own it, I could resell it if I choose (which I don't). But if they have good enough sales on digital games I might go with that option as well. My main reason like the idea of all digital is the digital rights act says you cannot sell your system without removing all downloads and your eshop account (unless something has changed). I am sure there will be exceptions, if the game is only digital or is so rare that its impossible to find a copy, I would go with the download.

I'll echo what others have said and go digital for Animal Crossing. Otherwise it's physical copies all the way!

I'm going to stick with all retail since I don't have a credit card and I'd have to go out and buy 2 download cards for each game. I also don't want to run the risk of losing anything since Nintendo doesn't have an account system and I want to physically own my game.

I might go digital for New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Scribblenauts Unlimited because those are more 'short burst' games to me. However, with Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion, those will most likely be retail.

Animal Crossing is 100% digital for me. For the others, I'd go retail just because I like to collect the boxes :)
Favorite Game: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)
Just Finished: Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)

Pretty much my thoughts. Animal Crossing really is that 'play once a day for 10 minutes while I play this other thing for 60 minutes.'

Wow, can't believe the amount of people saying they're going to download AC. Until I get a good reason to buy a full 3DS game digitally, I'm sticking with retail.

For starters, I see no perks what so ever buying digitally. With retail you get a cool box-art, manual (physical), and the game itself. With digital, you don't get a price cut, if you lose your 3DS say goodbye to everything, and you can't smell the awesome scent of a new game smell in the box, but you don't have to pay taxes, which is around $3-$10 depending on where you live at. Big whoop.

Granted, once they make user accounts available, it won't be as bad. Nor if they add 3DS games to the 'game of the weekend', or something like that. And the whole 'it's more convenient thing' is not up my ally considering the fact that I carry around a tote bag that holds 20 3DS/DS games, plus a charger, headphones, etc.

In the end, I'm going for retail for 3DS games.

Well, like I said, I'm in the same boat as you.

I just think if I had to pick a game, it'd be Animal Crossing.

I'm probably not going to get it digitally though. But if I were to get a game digitally, it would be that one. It would prevent me from stopping playing it.

Also, all your stuff is not technically gone. Maybe saves (SD card), but Nintendo can get you your games back through Club Nintendo if I am not mistaken. But yeah.

The reason why people are putting Animal Crossing over any other retail game is simple: Animal Crossing is a 10-minutes a day game that gets in the way of other games as a disc. Once a new game comes out it's 'man, I want to continue to play Animal Crossing, but OMG ZELDA!' and then once you spend a week or two to beat Zelda, you throw back in AC and you're not interested in it anymore.

The thinking is if you can play Animal Crossing more lazily, you'll play it for a longer period of time.

Exactly this.

Generally I get Animal Crossing, play too much get a new game and don't really get back to it.

The Wii game only lasted me long because my friend, girlfriend and I kept taking pictures of weird stuff and posting them on Facebook. And it was a dark time where no games were out on Wii to even play. As soon as a good game came, though, it was trashed for that and I rarely went back to it except for 'DLC' items and holidays, maybe.

Digital AC would allow for playing the new hit game AND hitting up the town for a few minutes. I'd be more inclined to visit the town all the time.

I nearly ALWAYS prefer physical because I love having a shelf full of boxes (even if I keep the cartridges in a seperate holder...) but Animal Crossing will definitely be tempting. It's amazing how little effort it takes to change a cartridge, and yet how much it impacts me playing a game again or not...

Most of the games on your list Waluigi is what's going to be digital on my 3DS and then some. I plan on going full digital... I unpacked some stuff a few months ago and was annoyed by how my boxes I have taken space in such a small area.

Added to your list, I'm getting Smash Bros. also as digital. That game HAS to be with me wherever I go so I can play it whenever. And it's not a game I'd want to risk losing (though, in my lifetime of handheld gaming, I only "lost" 2 games- Pokemon Blue and Clubhouse Games in a collection of at least over 100). Not going to happen again. No way.

If I was made of money, I'd buy Super Smash Bros. both digitally AND physically.

That way, I'd have the game to go with my physical copies of SSB, Melee and Brawl, but I'd also never NOT have the game available to play on my 3DS.

AGH...

Honestly, if I had the ability to do so I'd rather get MK7 digitally. Because, as is with every Mario Kart game, once I've unlocked everything (or close enough), I don't ever touch it except for local multiplayer. At the same time I'm feeling less than inclined to double dip.

I'd be more than happy though to get a digital copy of the game that comes alongside the physical copy for $10 or even $20 more of the original game price.

Something to note is that not all US states are exempt from sales tax on digital sales. I live in Illinois and the digital sales tax is 6.25%. Lower than my area's physical sales tax, but still another blow to the pros of digital download.

NJ isn't exempt from taxes either.

But on 3DS, and presumably Wii U, there are ways to get around that. You can lie about where you live in the eShop.
