is the DS dead?

Whats better then one screen? Well two screens of course! Current-gen portables inside: DS, Lite, DSi, DSXL, 3DS...

is the DS dead?

Postby bobafruit » 16 Aug 2012 19:33

Everyone knows that now that "the last Story" is out for the Wii that the Wii is probably dead.

Are there any more quality games coming for the DS? Is there life left in this little guy?

It seems like the DS is dead since releases have only been trickling out lately, but Nintendo did just release Pokemon conquest, which makes me wonder what kind of support we can expect... there are still truckloads of unlocalized jRPGs, and if you remember the GBA did get one or two last RPGs before being taken off life support.

The Wii is officially dead after the Kirby Collection, and the DS is dead after Black/White 2. It's kind of sad for me that the first full generation of consoles I clearly remember getting is dying.

Well, the DS still has Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 coming, and they seems to be major releases for Nintendo, and Europe will get Learn with Pokémon: Typing Adventure other than that, there isn't much coming, even if Nintendo puts it on life support, it would be adviseable to look for games you missed. That's what I've been doing since February 2010 (after ignoring it for 3 years) and my DS collection grew from 15 games to 51 games until this day.
And last year, we still got some games from Nintendo:
*Little Charo Travels in English (for Japan)
*Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelations
*Pokémon Black
*Pokémon White
*Solatorobo: Red the Hunter (for Europe)
*Pokemon Card Game: Asobikata DS (for Japan, secretly)
*Kirby Mass Attack
*Dragon Quest Monster: Joker 2
*Professor Layton and the Last Specter
*Fossil Fighters: Champions

Well given the 3DS is out and has been for a while, I'd say it is. The only thing left for it is Pokemon Black 2/White 2, and those are only on the original DS for compatibility reasons.

I asked NOA, again, about the other Fire Emblem game for the DS, the one yet to be localized and here is NOA's reply.
I even asked whomever, to forward my request for the other Fire Emlem DS game to Reggie.

"Thanks for writing back. I wish I had some new information for you, however, we haven't heard of any plans to release Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - Heroes of Light and Shadow here in the Americas. I have, however, documented your interest in this game and have forwarded your comments to the appropriate departments here at Nintendo for review purposes.

While there are no guarantees that this game will be announced for release in the future, if any announcements are made regarding this title, we'll be sure to post the news to our website (www.nintendo.com), so please check back from time to time."

Yes. Black 2/White 2 aren't keeping the DS alive, it's more or less just a final shock back to life after dying and then going down for good after that.

Likewise, Wii is dead and has been, but keeps getting shocked awake. The last big Wii release is actually Epic Mickey 2. So both will be officially dead by this fall, but they are in a state I could hardly call alive.

I mean, honestly, they've been in a sort of coma since last year anyway, just vaguely springing to life since Skyward Sword and Mass Attack.

Well, it may be officially dead in the sense of not getting any new games.

Unofficially, however, it's not dead to me. I've only played a relatively puny number of games for the system, so it's still got a lot of life in it as far as I'm concerned. Shoot, I'm still discovering GBA games. :P

That's an auto-response. I don't think they even read it. They just insert the title you mention in between "release" and "here" and hit send.

My guess is that DS will still be alive in 2013, meaning it will have some games come out for it. But that will most likely be it's last year.

As for Wii, yeah, it IS pretty much almost "dead", though, with The Last Story JUST having come out (Except in places where it got delayed....grrrr), as well as the fact that technically, DQX is still supposed to come out for it in NA (one would assume). And a few other choice games, like Lego Lord of the rings, Epic Mickey 2, WWE 13, Madden 13, and of course the Kirby Collection, are still coming out between now and Christmas. Not a bad way to go.

It's ironic though, that with the exception of the GC, every other Nintendo home console has had a Kirby game be one of the last major Nintendo published releases for it. Kirby's Adventure, Kirby's Dreamland 3, Kirby 64, and now the Kirby' Collection. I guess Kirby should just be known as "The Closer".

Re: is the DS dead?

Not to mention, aside from Pokemon, Kirby Mass Attack was Nintendo's last big game for DS, wasn't it?

And I really don't count Kirby Dream Collection as a 'last big game' for Wii since it's technically old games, 4 of which are available on the Wii already. And The Last Story already came out everywhere else, so that's only really a last hurrah in NA.

DQX is a Twilight Princess situation and will probably be looked at more as a Wii U game when that version comes.

So that or Epic Mickey 2 are the last games for Wii. Now it's just hand-me downs, ports, multiplat games and things that come out every year (sports).

DS will obviously still get games in 2013, but none of them will be good. Or they will be, but the 3DS versions will be better.

We'll probably still get some DSiWare though.

Re: is the DS dead?

Like everyone else has said, Pokemon Black and White 2 will be the last major titles for the system. After that the only other DS games will mostly be mostly low key titles of highly varying quality, and some of them are getting 3DS versions anyway (the impressive looking Adventure Time game will be hitting both platforms, but personally I'm getting it for the 3DS).

On the Wii side of things, I think the last hurrah for it (in NA and Europe at least) will be Epic Mickey 2 this October (even then it is rather close to when the Wii U is supposedly launching, so people may just pick up the game to play on their new backwards compatible system). After that I'd say the original Wii is pretty much done for and it'll be all about Wii U (as for Dragon Quest X, once it does release internationally, I think it is possible we may get both versions, especially since it's supposed to have cross-platform play, but I'm telling you right now the Wii U version WILL be the most heavily promoted).

Yeah, that's the other thing. Epic Mickey 2 is so close to Wii U, some people will probably just play it on that. Just like probably EVERYONE getting Black/White 2 is going to play them on the 3DS (unless they don't have one) since it ties to the system (online) and they're going to want to use Dream Radar with it.

I also keep forgetting about Adventure Time for DS. Haha. But yeah. We're at the point where everything is so close to Wii U and more people owning 3DS systems that most people are not going to play them on the original system they were for. Kind of like how the last Gamecube games were probably played on Wii instead.

Considering it's close to 7 or 8 years old, it should be. The 3DS has every reason to have the games now. The DS has none. It's dated Tech, while still able to have good games, you just can't do somethings on it. I love my DS, but I think it's time to put the boy down, and get a 3DSXL. -salutes my DS in a box- Of all the souls I've encountered..... his was the most... human.

I'd totally forgotten that pokemon black and white 2 had yet to come out...

Anyway, anyone think we have much hope of official localizations for the boatloads of unlocalized jRPGs?

There are probably more unlocalized DS jRPGs than there are PS3 and 360 jRPGs combined.

Well... the answer to such a question is dependant on who's answering it. The answer may be influenced by the entertainment derived from the games, and/or which games are yet to be played. It may very well be the CONSOLES being spoken about, here, since we're moving into another console generation. Me, however, thinks they're far from perishing; there's a whole boatload of games for the DS that I'm yet to play. Even so, don't we at some points in time derive enjoyment from games past? So if the console's dead, that doesn't mean the games on it are.

First of all, a Nintendo console doesn't die three days after it's final Nintendo game. That said, if it is dying this year, at least it went out with a bang. 2011 was a great year for the DS and 2012 hasn't been that bad either. Pokemon Conquest, Pokemon Black & White 2, Adventure Time, Devil Survivor 2; three, maybe four games that have extremely long playing time that could get any DS owner through the year. If there are only going to be a few games worth getting for your system in a year, make them count. Nintendo, Atlus and Wayforward did just that.

I think the idea is that the console is dead, not the games.

Most people are playing Pokemon BW2 on their 3DS. Most are getting the 3DS version of Adventure Time. I'm sure people picked up Conquest for 3DS as well, and Devil Survivor 2 (or are hoping for a 3DS remake like the first one).

Obviously not everyone, but you could also argue that Gamecube isn't dead since people are still playing Gamecube/GCN games.

The DS is dead for the most part and the only people buying/playing them are people who can't spare $180 (which is understandable) for a 3DS. Obviously you can stand to be a DS-only owner for a while longer, but the amount of games out now for 3DS makes money the only possible barrier, since there are more than enough quality titles on eShop and at retail and it is backward compatible.
