Rock Lobster wrote:Honestly, as much as I enjoy the 3DS at times, I feel like I want to trade it in for the Vita. I was always jealous of all the big games that came out on PSP that I didn't get to experience as a DS owner, and it seems that far more of these worthwhile experiences are in line for the Vita than for the 3DS. While the first-party 3DS games are normally top-notch, they are few and far between, so my library is very limited and I do not get much use out of the console. The battery life of the 3DS is also something I can't get past, and it leaves me playing more games on my phone than on any dedicated portable gaming device. I don't mean to hate on the 3DS, but do you guys think I should remedy this situation and go for it?

If you felt PSP had better games than DS then go ahead and get the Vita. I couldn't disagree more though, PSP had some good games, but the DS had far more good games than PSP. I suspect that will be the case this time around too, the good 3DS games are finally starting to come out. And the Vita is going to have even less battery life than the 3DS from what I understand it gets about 3.5 hours on a charge. What kind of phone do you have that gets 4 or 5 hours of playing games in a charge?

PSP had a bunch of spin-off/side titles from their main franchises. It looks to me like Vita pretty much has the same coming. Also, the 3DS is considerably more powerful than the DS was. The DS was basically around N64 level, and thus of course you weren't going to see perfect ports of games like Assassin's Creed or something.

But as far as "big games" coming out, I'd say, for starters, that something like Shinobi or Resident Evil is prettty big. Second, I'd say that a remake of Monster Hunter 3 and Monster Hunter 4 being 3DS exclusive is pretty huge, especially for Japan. Third, I know that stronger 3rd party support is coming, and with games like Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario, and apparently a Smash Bros. title in the works, 3DS will be fine.

I was gonna get a vita. was starting to like some of the software I was seeing. but proprietary memory cards that cost mad dollars for no reason and 1 psn account per device, I'm gonna take a wait and see stance.

Now that I think about it more, I think I'm not going to invest in the Vita. It does in fact have a shorter battery life than the 3DS, and I can easily get one of those 3rd party devices to extend that of the 3DS. I think I'm going to just get a PS3 for my Sony fix, as I'm just not pleased with the 360 I got. I had a PS3 in the past and was enjoying it, but I still preferred the Wii and wanted to get one for college since I couldn't bring my family's there so I had to trade it in. I ended up getting a 360 for free with my laptop, and as much as I thought I was going to like it(as much as I love the Wii, I miss out on some great next-gen experiences with just it), I don't like the exclusives Microsoft has, so I only really play multiplatform games and am really interested in the Sony exclusive franchises. As such, I think I'll be trading in my 360 and games along with making use of my work money to get one.

yea, unless you like the 360 exclusives, stay with a ps3. netflix without having to pay for gold, etc. ps1 classics. I have a wired 360 controller for my computer, that basically makes my computer a 360 that gets amazing deals on steam.

I am really hoping that the PS Vita works out with all that is supposed to go into this new handheld. As long as they can get a good flow of games that consumers want to buy I think it will be a great system. I have yet to get into the 3DS era and I don't think that I will. I had one of the original PSP systems that I really liked a lot. I really had no complaints except for the lack of really big game titles that would keep me interested. As far as picking up the system at launch that will not happen. I plan on waiting till next fall and then maybe get one. I see the potential for the great games and the intergration to the PS3 which is great. Lets hope they can keep there word on most of this stuff and sell some systems.

The Vita is something that I find to be both amazing and unremarkable at the same time. Which is causing me to hold out on purchasing one for myself.

The system itself is awesome. I very much love all the features the system has, and the graphics are astounding. It really does resemble a portable PS3 and the quality of the screen is very nice as well....If quality of a system alone were what determined how great something is...I would without a doubt go out and buy a Vita right now....

....but....This resembles last gen to me. The relationship between the 3DS and the Vita very much reminds me (at least so far) of the relationship between the DS and the PSP. As far as system functionality was concerned PSP was the better choice. Both the graphics and how they displayed were superior on the PSP when compared to the DS. I had a DS early on in it's life cycle, and seeing the PSP and how cool it was made me want one for myself. So I got one, and while the system had a couple excellent (and I really do mean excellent) games on it it did not extend past those couple games. There were, by far, more good games that came out on the DS then the PSP.

Like I said, there was only a handful of actual good games that I enjoyed playing on the PSP, and that is whats keeping me from getting a Vita. The system itself seems amazing, but the library of games could end up being as lackluster as the PSP. The Vita has a pretty decent launch lineup, but there isn't a single game that I would be interested in from the launch lineup that I can't get on my PS3 (or 360). Which is another problem that the Vita has...I saw a lot of great games coming out for the system, but then I also saw that those games are coming to the PS3 as well (at least for the ones that I'm interested in). There are not enough exclusives on the system. I will only buy the system when it has a lot of games that I want and are unique to the Vita. So far the only exclusive that looks interesting to me is Gravity Rush... I'm not going to buy the Vita for one game, and I'm not going to buy the Vita so that I can have a portable PS3.

Anyways, I actually do want the system to succeed. Like I said, I love the system, it really is an awesome piece of tech, but it just needs to get exclusive games that are good.

Well, I actually got to try this at Best Buy today, even though I wouldn't have nearly enough room in my account to afford it comfortably, but I wanted to try it. I know there was a video/article going around on here about how it was kind of awkward, but I had no idea it was that bad. I don't think my hands are all that small, but it was way too big to be comfortable to hold for too long. If I reached my fingers to use the touchpanel on the back, it took my thumbs off of the screen on front and vice-versa. If I had my finger on the shoulder button, reaching my thumb down to the analog stick on that side was also kind of a stretch. There were times when Wipeout's menu required me to touch an OK/check-mark button on the screen, and I practically had to reposition my entire hand to reach it. At first I thought that Vita's decision to have all these extra control options was a great idea, and that Nintendo should have used a back touch-panel in place of the touchscreen, but now I think that it's just counterproductive to have all those control options and not be able to use them from the same position. It's not IMPOSSIBLE to reach these positions, but it's definitely uncomfortable for me.

Also, for being cartridge-based, Wipeout sure took a LONG time to load. Wasn't impressed with the build quality of the sticks either, very tiny, didn't have a whole lot of tactical feedback somehow, just felt kinda loose. I'm not saying it's a terrible piece of tech, I just think this is the usual idea of Sony being more of a business company than a gaming company, and that they focus more on including the best technology so that they're reviewed as being on top, without really thinking about how it all comes together in gaming form. As it is I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway, but I just really don't like the way it's made. It really feels like its design was made more for its looks than actually being something you'd hold for an hour or more, let alone play an action-intense game that would actually put all that power to good use and have more of a chance of cramping my hands.

Trouble with Vita, for me, is that there's a lot of cool games out for it but just nothing that makes me feel like I need the system.

Their first party output on PS3 is a big reason to get behind the machine. On Vita though the big games seem to be just spin-offs made by second-tier developers. Uncharted 4 by Naughty Dog? I'd have the machine day one. Golden Abyss, just not as exciting. If Sony want to compete in the handheld market, they need to dedicate some top-tier developers to it. It's not like they're short of them.

Similarly a lot of the games drawing praise are things like Escape Plan and Stardust Delta. While I'd jump on these in a heartbeat if I owned the system already, I'm not interested in buying a Vita for them.

So I'm waiting. I'm excited about Gravity Rush and if Sony announce some more cool games over the course of this year I'll probably get one. Plus until Sony definitely get this system off the ground I'm a little apprehensive buying one. It doesn't seem to be doing as terribly in Europe and the States as in Japan - and Call of Duty Vita is likely to be a big boost later this year - but still.

I've already seen some, but they've kinda switched from "doomed" to "Sony can still save it" articles. If they have nothing great to show at E3 I expect a whole lot more "doomed" articles to come our way.

The only way I'd buy a PS Vita is if a new KH game appears on it. (But thank god recently Nomura confirmed that it'll never happen since he wants the series back on consoles again. :) )

There are PSP games available, but very far from all of them. If I recall correctly it's all the digital versions of PSP games available for the PSP that are available for the Vita. Which means that there are a lot of great titles missing from what the VITA can get out of the PSP library.

I tried one at Best Buy. Eh, it was okay, maybe a bit big. Can't complain too much about the hardware. I would never pick it over the 3DS, though.

I'm kind of interested in Persona 4: Golden (loved the original), but other than that I can't find any reason to get one really.

Well given what Sony didn't show at their press conference I think we can expect a good number of those "DOOMED!!!" articles. There are lotsa clicks that need to be baited.
