PSP threatening DS?

Postby the_sackboy » 03 Sep 2008 14:28

The day of reckoning has finally come, PSP owners! With Sony coming out with the PSP-Brite and it's awesome new features, it seems the PSP is ready to take on the DS where it hurts. So far, we've seen 3 revisions from Sony, not really known for big system upgrades, and only 2 from Nintendo, known for a new system version every month it seems. Sure, Nintendo may not see the PSP as a threat, or bring out a "Nintendo DS-3000", but know this DS: Your days are numbered (not really).

Seriously though, all the exclusives that have come out lately for the PSP have really helped. I don't see it ever overtaking the DS, though. As for the PSP-3000, I'm glad I don't own a PSP yet, so when I do buy one, I can buy the latest greatest version. But the upgrades seem pretty minor (though the brighter screen looks nice).

It's a shame that it takes 2 remodels to even start to catch up to the DS, a lot of people wasted their money on the earlier two models. I'm afraid to even buy a PSP now, who knows when they'll come out with another upgrade after I spent all that cash on the last one. Uncool.

I hope Nintendo makes a whole new system though, and inspires Sony to do the same, because I've always thought this teensy weensy upgrade = new system you have to buy thing was, frankly, kind of silly, and unfairly expensive for gamers. It's why I didn't buy the DS Phat, I figured something like the Lite would be out by the time there were games I really wanted.

A 3rd DS would crush me, seeing as I'm replacing my broken DS Lite in a few days with the new Silver one. They don't need another upgrade though, they need a whole new system if they want to really boost sales and further the industry standard.

Meh, I have a drawer at home that looks like a Nintendo portable graveyard. DS Phat, check. DS Lite, check. Several GBA Advances, check. GBA Advance with backlit screen, check. GBA Micro (the only one I really regret), check. I'm a sucker for Nintendo's handheld gadgets.

On topic though, I'm not sure what else Sony could improve about the PSP in the future other than improving the battery life and speeding up the UMD access speed. Maybe stick a few gigs of flash memory in there so you don't have to constantly fiddle around with a memory stick. But then people wouldn't have to buy memory sticks and Sony would lose money, so that'll never happen.
