Disc Capacity?

Everything about the Wii and its games...

The n64's capactiy was what? 15-35 meg?
PS1 was 700 meg.

Why are you comparing the disc capacity of the N64 and the PS1 when the N64 doesn't use discs?

Because whether it uses discs is irrelavent, the point is how much space the developers could make good games with. And to demonstrate that with a lot more space they were very happy to use more space.

My point in showing each system's maximum was to show how the maximums have developed over the years. Not how discs have developed.

Ok... that's barely understandable. But I think you're wondering why I'd want all that space and suggesting that I'd be using it for mp3's and pictures etc... Computer files I think is what you're suggesting I'd use it for.

Let me just say, that I'd obviously be using my pc for those things. And giving the ps3 the capability to have an elaborate removeable storage system doesn't mean it's going to be used as a hard-drive... that would be stupid... Obviously, like we've been saying, it'd be used by the developers for better game textures, sound effects, just... high quality experience.

Honestly though, it in no way guarantees better games to be made, only good gameplay guarantees that... however games with great gameplay will probably be improved by such quality graphics, like mgs4 or the new final fantasy's.

When a game like F.E.A.R. can be held on a single DVD, I think we're gonna be alright when it comes to disc capacity.

I wonder if the optical dics nintendo will use are like a dual layer cd?

I mean, lets be honest 4.7 is becoming a nightmare for developers to work with, look at the xbox 360 already, remember some xbox games came on dual layered cd.

Big example was ninja gaiden.

One thing to remember is it's relatively meaningless to have huge storage capacity if you have limited RAM. The primary difference in graphics that you will notice for having increased space is better textures. But since the system only has 512 mb of ram or so, there's only so much quality that you can display with the textures.

Storage can be used in other areas, such as cutscenes and soundtracks, but it's hard to imagine that this type of content would use the 50 gigabytes or so that the PS3 uses. I think we'll be seeing maybe 15 gig games by the end of the life cycle, which will end up providing some problem for the Revolution, but not enough to be a chronic issue.

Thats true, I just think it would be great to have around the same memory as xbox360 and PS3, just so there are no porting issues.

I hate when a game comes out and they cut down scenes or reduce quality and stuff.

I still have a feeling the revo will be graphical bettter the xbox360 but if you don't have hdtv, you can easily see the difference, I hope nintendo games come in 720i

I was trying to find info about a rumour recentyle, that team bungie have to cut up developoment of the halo 3 for xbox360, dues to memory issues, rumours state the games was like 20 gig.

So it seems since xbox360 went normal dvd, the game may have to come on 3 to 4 disc.

I don't mind having mulit-disc games. It gives me the feeling that I'm getting more bang for my buck.

Nah it dont mean more bang for your buck, i hate disc swapping when we have formats that handle the capacity.

8.5 gigs, that is a good amount. Finally nintendo has a good game storage. that will make the games that much better

Yes thats very good news matey, I quite agree nearly 9 gigs of storage :-)

I wonder if sony made the blu ray to have bigger games, so that when a game got ported they could say it was inferior on other systems?

To fill a Blu Ray disk with gaming would result in a price too big to profit off.

i thought that a lot of games for ps2/xbox didn't fill up those 4.4gig dvd's. How would they possibly fill the blu ray's :?

Well most games on ps2 and xbox come on standard 4.7gb dvd discs, gamecube was 1.8gb, so a lot of file compression was used.

Some games like metal gear solid came on dual layered disks, which gave you 9gb if me correct roughly.

xbox 360 deveopers have already complained about lack of space on disk, maybe they using the standard dvd discs and not the dual layered version, does anyone actually no?

well they are complaining because they are putting the hd and regular quality on there which takes up a lot more space. They are using the 9gb i think.

IGN says 8GB confirmed.

Look at their FAQ ;)

Wonder if they are only speculating... again...

With HD they need next gen formats. In normal definitoin 8.5 is pushing it for BIG games. Star Ocean is 2 DVD's, same with a lot of other RPG's. They may do better with a next gen drive, but I'm not willing to pay another $60 for the system so i don't have to change a disk once in a great while.

with the graphics processors being as advanced as they are these days, i don't understand why the cut-scenes, etc aren't done in real-time. that saves a HUGE amount of disk-space since the imagery isn't a gigantic mpeg file on the disk, and would help keep down the need for super-capacity disks. plus, there wouldn't necessarily be that disjoint where the game switches over to movie-playing and back again, but rather a smooth transition.

Haha, you made me laugh in the classroom :D everyone looked at me

But back to topic, I've read on internet (surprise surprise) that it would be as many have stated before me 4.7 gig but 9.4 gig on duallayer.

the dual layer makes it just a bit thicker...........if they do this will it have problems loading in the systems........or wouldn't it get jammed somehow becuase the disk is thicker

Look at all you moie DVDs most of them are Dual Layer. And they work fine. A dual layer DVD doesn't mean that it is twice the thickness of a single layer DVD, a DVD layer is quite thin.
