Maybe the touchscreen on the gamepad could be used as an alternate form of imput to attacks. For exemple, you tap it quickly to perform your standing attack,do a stroke to perform a directionnal attack and do a long stroke to perform a smash attack.

Beyond that, the gamepad probably wont be that useful and wont change drasticaly the game.

“It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’ There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive…. In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.”

This makes me think that the next game will have 35 characters in it. Maybe even less.

Isn't that an old quote? I could swear I've read that before somewhere...

Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind if we only got a handful of new characters, or if they dropped a few existing ones for others more deserving of a spot on the roster. Plus let's not forget that Brawl had about 39 characters counting all transformations, etc. So I think we'll still have a pretty decent lineup this time.

They can just separate the two then - Young Impa being a 'SS Sheik' in essence anyway.

Uh...not really, they're pretty different characters, Sheik and Impa. Also, it'd ruin the whole transformation aspect of it.

Nah. It would just not be a transformation. Instead of Zelda transforming into Sheik, she would trade places with Impa, kind of like how characters switch in Marvel vs. Capcom or something. Or in SSB, like Pokemon Trainer.

And while Sheik and SS Impa are different characters in, they are both Sheikah and do the same kind of stuff. From a fighting game point of view, they would serve the same purpose.

Sheik's moveset is based on absolutely nothing, and it could easily be sent over to Impa.

They could also separate them as two characters instead of a transformation.

led-naruto wrote:Now that I think about it, what will the guy or guys with gamepads do?

Moreover... does that mean it will support 6 players?

If I had to guess, the Gamepad users would probably have a SSF4 style gameplay, where they could press on-screen commands to do moves.

As for 5-6 players, I have no idea. It's possible. I mean, Melee and Brawl can support that many characters technically (evidenced by Multi-Man Brawl/Melee).

I prefer quality over quantity anyway.

If anyone play as Jigglypuff or King Dedede or Diddy Kong or Lucas or any characters that are only filling the spots just for the sake of size, please come in and defend why they should be in the next game.

I suggest they limit the biggest Nintendo franchises to 3 representatives, the second tier franchises representatives to 2 and everyone else to 1 per franchises,so they would be more spots for potential newcommers from other series that never got represented before and obscure franchises.

I have friends that main as each one of those characters you listed. Not to mention out of what you listed only Lucas can be argued as a filler character (better clone of Ness)-

I thought something like changing from Isa to Kachi like in Sin & Punishment 2 with your example of Impa and Zelda. But I don't doubt the idea of an artist from Nintendo to design a new Sheik just for this game.

You mean, we can see 12 Ice Climbers on the screen? QuQ

Like the post above, I have friends that play as each of them, including me as a Lucas player. I prefer Lucas since I get more ranged and powerful attacks. I can't see them in your definition of "quality over quantity" because they are the quality part.
Your suggestion sounds conflicting with your "over quantity" statement, you're just substituting a character for another. Then again, the Mario franchise will be limited with that and everyone is already used to seeing Mario, Peach, Bowser and Luigi in the game.
But things change, I don't know how much capacity the games for the Wii U can handle, so we may see the same faces from the previous games and more.

Do you guys see any character from the Kirby series as playable or featuring in the game (as a boss, or assist trophy... or part of a stage)? I can see Bandanna Dee to appear since the recent games like Superstar Ultra, Mass Attack and Return to Dreamland. Maybe even putting some forgotten villains like Drawcia as bosses...

Since we all know new skins will be needed, I have some that I would like to see. I couldn't think of many that weren't already used (like Dark Link and white Donkey Kong), so I ended up with only two. I think both of these could work as skins:

Alright, you got me there,i was just curious.

But still,If the roster doesn`t get a whole lot bigger, then there is a bunch of Nintendo series whose characters never made it as playable and i think if they aren`t going farther in size, then maybe it would be better to see the developers focusing on potential new characters from different series that weren`t represented before than bringing back characters from franchises that were already well represented even before Brawl.

That doesn`t mean those characters that got removed would be gone forever. If anything, they could be added as dlc or unlockables in the new game,so they could still be back in the new game.I`m only suggesting that newcommers from more obscure series gets the priority if possible.

Also, the game is being made for Wii U and 3ds,and the differences between the two versions may not be as big as it`s seems outside of graphics and the connectivity elements. If anything, the roster and stages will be the same.

Samus and Link have the easiest skins.

If they really do skins some characters will have to be nothing more then pallet swaps or original designs paying homage to other Nintendo characters. Kinda like all the alt colors in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.

Seriously, that quote is ANCIENT. And the picture makes me very, very happy.

EDIT: And again my character thoughts
- Toon Link will get cut in favor of Wolf Link w/ Midna
- Ike will get cut in favor of the new FE Protagonist

So Zero Suit Samus confirmed? And if they are keeping Meta Knight around, I suspect King Dedede will make a return. Hopefully Waddle Dee will be added? =3

I also think that Toon Link will get cut (Which is a shame), but I doubt Link w/ Midna will happen.

What if SSB went the Skylanders route? After all in the N64 and GameCube games they where action figures that came to life. Don't tell me it won't work, I know plenty of people who already pay big money to import Nintendo figurines from Japan. The 3DS version could focus on the customization of the character, while the Wii U version focused on completive modes. They could release figures throughout the entire WiiU lifespan. I honestly believe they'd make more (worldwide) off SSB Figures then Pokemon Figures. Just a thought (and potential nightmare)

Simple Pattern Recognition:
#1: First N64 Zelda game: Ocarina of Time, had Child Link, appears in Melee
#2: First GC Zelda game: Wind Waker, had Toon Link, appears in Brawl
#3: First Wii Zelda game: Twilight Princess, had Wolf Link w/ Midna, ???

The skylander idea probably wont happen,Nintendo isn`t greedy like Boredvision.

Anyway, looking at the picture,it feels a lot like they just teased that Mario,Luigi,Link,Pikachu,Kirby,Metaknight,Samus and her zero suit,Donkey Kong,Marth,Pit,Captain Olimar,Mr.game and Watch,Fox,Wario and either Lucas or Ness will be back.

Easy on the Captain Olimar, they might bring in a new character from Pikmin 3. And odds are 99% chance of Ness coming back. 30% for Lucas. (The way I see it)

Yea, I'd like to think Nintendo isn't greedy, but that isn't true. All corporations are greedy.

Anyway, back on subject, what are the chances of King K. Rool appearing in the next Super Smash Bros? Not appearing in Donkey Kong Country Returns probably hurts his chances, but what if he appears in a new Donkey Kong Country Returns game before Super Smash Bros. U comes out? I believe the Donkey Kong series deserves more than just Diddy and Donkey Kong, especially if Earthbound gets two characters (Lucas, Ness).

Finally another King K. Rool supporter on Go! Nintendo!

Sadly he's not as relevant as what he once was so I really don't think he'll make it in as a playable character. However he was in Mario Super Sluggers supporting a mayan/aztec like redesign (see my profile pic)

His mayan/aztec design can be his main skin, and these could be his alternates:

Obviously this is all wishful thinking, but I think he has a 50% chance of making it. It all depends on what route Nintendo and Namco/Bandai will take. If they go the route of adding a lot of characters (10+), some of which may not be relevant or popular, then King K. Rool will make it. If they only add 3-8 characters, King K. Rool has little chance to make it. But, remember, Brawl added 9 characters, and Melee added 14. So, the possibility of 10+ new characters in Super Smash Bros. U is reasonable.

What Sakurai likes to do is promote the last game in a current series depending on the generation.

Example:
In Melee, Mario had a cape from Super Mario World. In Brawl, he had Fludd from Sunshine. I'd bet from dollars to donuts that in this version, he'd have Luma.
Mega Man 9 isn't hard, you're just not paying attention
