i think the 3ds slider pads are nice, but bigger ones would be ideal. i assume wii u will have bigger ones.

I talked to one of the admins in the GoNintendo chat room and they said that they tried out the Wii U controller at E3 2011 and they said that the Circle Pads on the Wii U controller is bigger than the Circle Pads on the Nintendo 3DS.

I'd have to see how they feel on the Wii U, but I like how the circle pad handles on the 3DS.

It seems that the slide pads of the U have some "edge" or raised circumference like the one in the nunchuk's stick. That alone should give enough of a grip on them.

For the WiiU, you can't have Giant analog sticks like the PS3 etc. They'd stick out too far and you'd need extra long thumbs to actually reach them, but IMO, analog sticks are more comfortable in general than Circle pads. I wanted the 3ds to have analog sticks since it was announced. but con-caved ones that didn't stick out any more than a circle pad

I think that the picture on the link below shows that the Circle Pads on the Wii U controller has some edge or raised circumference like the one on the Wii Nunchuk's analog stick.

let's hope the wiiU tablet controller keeps the circle pads

Postby bfx9 » 12 Jan 2012 19:54

i don't know about you guys, but because of the circle pad, my skill
at Mario Kart 7 3DS has been the best by far in the series.
I'm an average player who is in the A tier with MK7.
I attributing it to the circle pad.

The wiiU circle pads should have a larger surface area to move
which means more "analog" control, which is a good thing.

I wonder how good the pad is in relation to a tight analog
stick with regards to pinpoint, fast aiming for a FPS?
The sliding mechanism may actually be an actual advantage for certain
genres.
And.....
for over all comfort and especially racing games and 3rd person
adventures like Mario 3DS, I think the circle pad is perfect
for a Nintendo system and a unique selling point.
who cares about FPS's anyway?

there is always the Xbox for that.

so are you 3DS owners on board for wiiU circle pads?

Circle pads scare me. Despite what Nintendo promises they just seem so.... fragile. My cousin breaks everything he touches. He's not a 3 year old or anything - he's just an idiot. He's too rough with things. Every time he comes to the house I nonchalantly hide my 3DS in a drawer somewhere. He already wore the heck out of all our sticks for basically every other controller we own. I'm wondering how long it's going to take him to break the circle pads on our WiiU

(seriously one game of super smash bros. and that thing is gone. Don't you think? Anyone?)
Everyone's entitled to opinions. Bc Nintendo stated they're listening to fans, I will make my voice heard. plz, don't take offense if I'm contradicting ur opinion in any posts. They arn't directed at u and I promise to not make fun of anyone personally^_^

I really like the circle pad on the 3DS. After just a bit of "getting used to" it's like playing with analog. Change is good sometimes we don't have to always be afraid of new things.

Also, it looks so good on the WiiU controller that I wouldn't want big sticks coming out of it. Let's wait and try it, I'm sure Nintendo will wow us as usual.

As much as I'd like better analog sticks, (pressure sensitive ones too) I'm just praying that they release the console in black at launch instead of releasing new colors three years after launch.

3 years? try 6 months. this is nintendo we are talking about here. maybe 2 colors at launch (and that only happened once with a console). then more later when sales start to slow.

I personally don't care what color my system is, but I'd kill for one done up in zelda gold with triforces and stuff on it.

They changed a lot of things around that should improve the controller tremendously. While the circle pads are okay, I would much rather have real analog sticks and am very happy they made that change. It doesn't really matter to me if they are click-able or not, but I guess that would be an added bonus. The new positioning of the sticks looks more comfortable as well. Also, the start and select buttons are now in a region where you can easily press them while holding the controller normally. Still not sure what those weird buttons are under the plus control pad and by the power button, but we will know soon enough. I sort of wish the controller was a bit smaller with everything closer to the touch screen. However, I can't really judge the actual size until I've held it myself. From what I have seen, it is fairly large though...

I'm very glad they decided to go with analog sticks. I do hope they add the octagonal shape around the analog sticks though. Thats why I always prefer Nintendos analog sticks to other companies.

You know the first time I use the circle pad on my 3DS It felt soooo good that I can play on my 3DS more comfortably and move easier I have no trouble at all with the circle pad I actually like them more than analog sticks.

Wii U Pro Controller

Postby mattmattishere » 03 Jun 2012 22:05

I have noticed a lot of people complaining about the button placement on the new controller. I was on gaf and came across this picture that explains a lot. Also I think they wanted to keep the same button placement as the Wii U game pad. http://i.imgur.com/AzVKu.jpg

@mattmattishere
This is my first time seeing that controller but I can already understand why people would have a problem with it. It looks uncomfortable and ugly. It's like a flip from the Wii Pro controller, where that one was similar the Playstation controller, this one is a copy of the 360, except it has both sticks high. Why can't they have left stick high and right stick low? It's much more comfortable that way. I'd much rather have a comfortable controller than a pretty one, and this controller isn't even that. I wish they'd just make a Wavebird WiiU. The Gamecube controller was soooo comfortable.

The change to actual analog sticks from the circle pad is a godsend. I'm sorry, I've played the 3DS, and it's a good system. But that circle pad is NOT the same as an analog stick. It's very slippery, and not as precise. I'll take this change any day of the year.

And quite frankly, the controller is supposed to be very light. I don't think it's size is going to be a big deal, and I'm sure most people are going to get used to it right away. And those that still want to complain? Can go buy something else.

Internet complaining about ripping off the 360 design is one thing, but internet complaining about the button/stick placement is ridiculous.
360: Left stick high, right stick low
DualShock: both sticks low
U Pro: both sticks high
...if there's complaining to be had, then they should complain about both the DualShock and the U Pro. And wait, how the hell would people know how comfortable or uncomfortable having both sticks up high would be? I don't think we've seen a controller that mimics that to compare to, so let's all calm the eff down. :o

I'm sure Nintendo knows what they're doing controller comfortably-wise. Otherwise, wouldn't we all be screwed with the Wii U Gamepad since the layout is basically the same?
Just be nice. Or else.
