Wii U rumours: What can you live with if they don't happen?

Postby MrWu » 03 Jun 2012 14:34

The lack of leaks from Nintendo and a whole lot of innuendo and speculating has caused a considerable amount of expectation that Nintendo will blow our socks off. But I am somewhat worried that even if Nintendo manages to drop a bomb or two (in terms of surprises) it may not live up to expectations simply because at this point everyone expects every speculative titles/feature/rumour that has popped up online to become true, or are likely to become true.

Here are some examples
- GTA V Wii U timed exclusive/lead platform (Given take2's acrimonious relationship with Nintendo when Chinatown wars didn't sell as expected, they may simply give Nintendo the finger)
- Diablo III/SC2 or any Blizzard game (why would Blizzard prefer Nintendo?)
- Steam/Gabe support for Wii U
- Wii U will finally get a mainline FF game that isn't FFXIV
- Multiple 3rd party multiplatform titles getting Wii U versions (RE6, LOs2) comes to mind
- Multiple DRC support for Wii U
- Wii U version of VMU
- Cloud Storage / rich apps environment etc.

So from this list, and from your own expectations which disappointments can you live with , which will make you upset ? (I left out live-without because it is assumed most of us will buy a Wii U regardless)

Personally
I can live with
- No Steam or Blizzard support
- No cloud storage / rich apps environment (again will be disappointed, and this may impact sales)

I will be upset
- If Nintendo can't pull 3rd party support up from Wii levels
- If no multiple DRC/uPad support

It will be easier to list what would make me upset.

-crap online. again.
-no accounts, digital titles tied to the hardware.
-no HD support
-tiny onboard storage
-lots of ram, but half locked away to service a bloated OS.
-no ethernet jack.
-no wireless 'classic controller'
-developers shoe horning in motion or screen features that don't make sense (every motion control in dkcr)
-no multiplatform support again.

I meant hard drive. not high def. and no, accounts aren't confirmed. just profiles. they still may tie everything to the hardware. it's not confirmed yet.

and we don't know anything about the online that matters. digital stores/account based purchases and actual online gaming. I do agree however, they are looking to be on the right track. I just want more xbl and psn, and less facebook/twitter. I can't play multiplayer over email.

Pretty sure accounts are confirmed or Iwata's blurb 25 minutes in where he says

"“We expect several generations of Nintendo hardware will be linked by the Nintendo network. In a similar way, the social element of Miiverse are also designed for Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and future Nintendo devices.”

Can't possibly work and it will make no sense to have a social network accross multiple platforms as Nintendo is planning to have accounts tied to the platform.

That's not to say there won't be something you don't like when the details are revealed. I assume there will be something for the Xbox fans and Sony fans to diss, but I'm fairly encouraged after the conference that a lot of the rumours we've heard
-unified accounts (needed for miiverse)
-cloud storage (needed for NN/miiverse integration)
-Nintendo apps on non Nintendo platforms (not necessarily games)

Will come true.

As for HDD, I'm pretty certain NeoGAF insiders and others, including Nintendo last E3 have confirmed it won't come with an HDD, but will support HDD via USB.

I don't put it past nintendo to derp it up hardcore. if they don't separate the hardware from the account system for digital purchases then it's really all for naught, imo.

and I agree about external drive support. lets hope they let any external drive work and not some nintendo branded drive only.

I want to be super excited for nintendo's online, but they've done pretty much nothing right in that space for the past decade.

Off that list, I won't really mind anything except no Steam support. That would be -really- awesome.

If friendcodes are still around, I can live with that since I've gotten use to them. :p

More than anything, I want and expect friendcodes gone. If they're still around, Nintendo has immediately lost focus and their hold on the online world.

It'd be cool for Steam and Blizzard support, but I'm not holding my breath.

But Nintendo needs a harddrive. Hopefully USB instead of proprietary, or even how PS3 allows for harddrives to be switched around, but it needs it in general, and badly. SD cards are not a long-term solution. The technology will take too long to have 128GB at a cheap enough price for consumers, and by the time it does we could be seeing games topping up dual-layered 50GB blu-rays.

1 hour just for Wii U seems excessive, unless there's extended time explaining the OS and Miiverse that they just previewed, which, I think they will mention but not go further in. The idea is out. Social Network + Nintendo.

I truly think there's 1 or 2 big ones dropping tomorrow. Major partners who will need onstage time to discuss their plans. A Steam/Blizzard type deal where it could be more than 1 exclusive.
