Circle Pads or No Circle Pads on the Wii U Controller?

Postby LegendofZelda1996 » 22 Oct 2011 23:45

Do you want Circle Pads on the Wii U controller or do you want analog sticks to replace the Circle Pads on the Wii U controller?

For me personally, if the Circle Pads are improved drastically, so that the Circle Pads could feel like and be as precise as the analog sticks, I wouldn't mind leaving the Circle Pads on the Wii U controller. But if not, it would be better to replace the Circle Pads with the analog stick on the Wii U controller.

What do you think? Please comment below. And thank you. :)

Analog sticks. I just feel like I have more control with an analog stick, and it's more comfortable. I can understand the circle pads on the 3DS because it's a portable device, but there really isn't any reason for them on the WiiU other than aesthetics.

it's flat dimensions are already pretty big; i don't think it would work well or feel comfortable to hold such a big thing plus long sticks. the circle pads are both equivalent in function and aid in usability/comfort for the wii u controller form... so no to sticks.

Dude, analog sticks all the way. The 3DS's circle pad sucks, in my opinion, because has anyone noticed that it slips when you hold it in one direction for a period of time? Well, that annoys me a little bit. But besides that, it's better than having only a d-pad for a handheld.

Plus, just imagine the GameCube controller having circle pads instead of analog sticks. Yeah...

i dunno... i kinda like the circle pads.. though, i think they could implement the analog sticks if they were to recess them a little further down in the controller(if there was enough room to do that)... that way they won't stick up as far.

I would prefer if Nintendo used actual analog sticks. They don't slip out of your hand after long periods of play and are more comfortable to use. If they do end up using circle pads for the Wii U controller I wouldn't mind, but I hope they would add some more grip to them.

I'd prefer it if they just included one of these in the box, the wiipad, while interesting in it's own right, just doesn't seem like it will be practical or comfortable long stretches of gaming.

No circle pads.
I spoke with a guy that played the Ghost Recon game at E3, and he said the circle pads are a terrible choice for FPS/Action games like that.

While comfort may be an issue as Cort mentioned, I just don't see how they are going to function well in FPS games compared to analogue sticks...though I'm hoping devs will continue to use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk options for FPS games as well.

Speaking a little off topic, but wouldn't it be cool if Nintendo had released an 'improved' version of the N64 controller instead of the Classic Controller? Same with the NES and SNES...would've been an amazing experience playing with for VC gaming.

after having played almost all of the e3 demos with the wii u controller and its circle pads, i fail to see why analogue sticks are any better. the circle pads for wii u work equally as well as analogue sticks.

of course nobody has played with final revision hardware, so all things considered, i don't quite understand the rage over something that almost nobody has played with and also has zero benefit other than giving people something to complain about. this is the internet, i suppose.

I suppose after extended play on the 3ds circle pad I just think that while alright for a clam shell portable, it's a poor substitute for a real stick. after about 45 min something about the way the circle pad makes you position your thumb makes mine start to hurt. that may have something to do with the size of the 3ds, but I just think going with circle pads instead of sticks is one of those moves that in 10 years we're gonna look back on and say "wtf were they thinking".

yeah.. i know what you mean about the 3ds "cramp".. i get that too. but in the hour+ of wii u i played at e3, i had no trouble at all. part of me thinks having to do an awkward, extra deep grip for those longer sticks might actually induce cramping though.

The one demo the guy that I know complained about, was the Ghost Recon game...FPS-ish 3rd person shooter?
He was not a fan of the circle pads at all, and said,
"I hate the analog sticks
they are terrible. I played a FPS with it
that is how I gauge the analogs"

As for a final version possibly changing, did the 3DS change from its initial E3 showing to the final release? I thought it was the exact same design...which is why I think( and possibly others) the Wii U controller that was shown, will be the final product released.

Hey cortjezter.

Let me ask you a few questions if you don't mind.

1.) Is the Circle Pads on the Wii U controller feel better than the Circle Pads on the Nintendo 3DS?

2.) Do you think that the Circle Pads on the Wii U controller can be drastically improved to feel like and be as precise as the analog sticks?

For other GoNintendo users, you are free to answer my questions if you wish.

You mean the best controller ever made.....with the exception of the microscopic d-pad that was horrible for things like fighting games, the amount of force it takes to press and hold down the L and R buttons (especially for games where you have to a lot, like Mario Kart and Zelda), and the size and placement of the "z button". I like the GC controller just fine, especially the Wavebird. But those three things I do take issue with, precluding from, to me, being the "best controller ever". The Playstation controller model is also precluded, for the simple reason that I have never cared for the disjointed d-pad. Again, especially with fighting games, it can get rather uncomfortable, and is not AS functional as a normal d-pad, over time.

I like the N64 controller fine. In fact, I don't really have a problem with it at all. The analog stick is more vulnerable to wear and tear, so the GC stick is better. But otherwise, the N64 pad had nice button placement, the Z-trigger was perfect, and the d-pad was right size. Though ultimately, I guess I still say that the SNES had the "best controller ever", as far as size, comfort, functionality, button placement, d-pad, etc. It was flawless. Which means the Classic Controller Pro, by extension, I would suppose is also kind of "the best controller ever", if it were the MAIN controller for the system. Because unlike the first Classic Controller model, the L/R/Z buttons are in a nice place (PS-esque), and the damn CHORD is coming from the top like it's supposed to.

So yeah. If the Classic Controller Pro were the main controller for a console, and not just an extra one, it probably would get my vote for "best controller ever", so far.

I'd say a tentative maybe. I just don't really believe in the circle pad as a analog stick replacement. I find it slightly more difficult to hold an exact position with one without applying pressure to it. and I can't use different parts of my thumb like you can with a stick, there was a really good article somewhere I read about subtle differences between a circle pad and a stick that laid it out really well. I'll try to find it.

Re: Circle Pads or No Circle Pads on the Wii U Controller?

Postby cortjezter » 24 Oct 2011 03:19

loz..

1) i think i already answered that in chat this weekend

2) i believe they are already as accurate as analog sticks. i also played an fps demo and while i admittedly don't play that genre much, the controller was more than adequate for me, and nobody else was complaining or having difficulty. i also don't believe the wii u pads are literally copy/pasted from the 3ds, so directly comparing the two like they are identical isn't as appropriate as the general idea of circle pads.

i think that for the form factor, it's a smart move for comfort and ergonomics. i'd liken it to holding a juicy encyclopedia or dictionary vs holding a magazine. it's going to be a lot easier to hold and manipulate that magazine for long periods of time than the thicker tome.

coffee..

i did not get a chance to play the ghost recon demo, so i'm not sure how well that software was polished or not. it is entirely plausible that your friend's difficulty could have been a result of the software and not the controller, especially since it was not nintendo's demo. the fps i played was nintendo's, and had no trouble between rmc, t27, and i. i guess one person's anecdote isn't worth any more or less than another's, but considering our party of three seemed fine, and one wasn't keen on it... i'm not sure how the objective person should keep score.

Ok, I have not used the Wii U and probably a lot of you haven't so I think to say that it won't feel right or it won't be as good when the people who actually used are saying the contrary is just not right. Comparing to the 3DS one is also out of the question because they are two different things, even if they are called the same, I'm sure they are not same (maybe bigger, more rugged...). From what I saw the only problem I could See was the grip, and that is easily fixed.

Oh, and the Wii U controller can change from what we saw at E3, and I think the fact that Nintendo decided not to show more Wii U info until 2012 may be prove of that.

I would really like an analog pad, something that is as precise as the circle pad, but a bit more tight and with a little more grip, like in most modern-day home consoles. Maybe like an analog stub? (NOT like the PSP one. That was insanely uncomfortable).

I like analog slightly better. The circle pads seem a little less durable, but maybe I'm just imagining it. One thing I want for sure though is the octagon shape around the edges of the circle or analog stick. It makes it much easier to press any direction precisely and quickly. Sometimes I find with the 3DS circle pad I start to drift off course if I am running straight ahead for a while.

a compromise would be nice, how about telescoping analog sticks so they can be longer or shorter and resemble
both circle pad and analog stick?

i think the 3ds slider pads are nice, but bigger ones would be ideal. i assume wii u will have bigger ones.
