Well, I think they are just getting the NSMB games out of the way since they will most likely be system sellers, and will push the 3DS more (and the XL due to same-day release) and the Wii U.
3D Land is something completely different, but I can almost guarantee that a new 3D world Mario game like SM64/Sunshine/Galaxies will be coming to Wii U, it's just not the game they're using right now. If I am not mistaken, the 2D-sidescrollers sold more than the Galaxy games did. It makes sense to use them first.
Galaxy/Galaxy 2 are more restricting in the way the overworld is handled (Galaxy 2 moreso than Galaxy), when compared to SM64 and Sunshine, but it could just be because of the way those games were planned out (and Galaxy 2 was just tons of stuff leftover that they didn't put into Galaxy 1).
I'm hoping for/assuming a game closer to SM64/Sunshine (but with the enhancements of the Galaxies) will be coming to Wii U. The HD graphics would benefit the series more than reusing Wii assets for the 2D game, in my opinion.
Unless they did it like Mighty Switch Force and it was HD hand-drawn 2D, then it'd look awesome, but I can almost guarantee that Nintendo's not going that way.
