Ubisoft has nothing against the British in Assassin's Creed III

"It's assassins versus Templars. There's a revolution going on and Connor will experience all facets of it. It's not as simple as Templars backing the crown and assassins backing the patriots, it's really two factions at war against the backdrop of another war. I have nothing against the Brits. It occurs against the backdrop of the Revolutionary war. And to be even more evasive, everyone back then was a Brit, this was not Americans against British - this was a British civil war." - Assassin's Creed III lead scriptwriter Corey May

Perhaps I've been out of the loop on this one. Has there really been all that much backlash with this? I really haven't heard many complaints at all.

Reminds me when there was a big buzz of Capcom being racist because Resident Evil 5 took place in Africa.

heh, it's a little amusing that in AC3 we have a Canadian game where they themselves are the "enemy" (since Canadians obviously were British during the American Revolution)

There is no denying in our bloody history and the things we have done centuries ago with regards to British history but it makes for great movies and games in this case. I love films about world war 2 and hitler and such but in no means does it make me feel like all Germans are racist killers. Games and films and books are fantastic when it's about real history. We Brits have a lot of history so it's good to see a game like this even being made.

Ubisoft has nothing against the British in Assassin's Creed

Postby AlexPuma » 12 Jun 2012 17:24

I remember the controversy surrounding the release of Mel Gibson's "The Patriot", coming shortly after Braveheart, that both movies portrayed the British as unsympathetic monsters that oppress freedom for teh evulz. I'm thinking that is where this stems from.

It was a simpler time when that was the only controversy surrounding Mel Gibson... heh.

If everyone was British in America before its birth as an independent country, why did we lose the accent? So silly. It'd be cool if we all still talked the same.

This is half of a joke, which is why it didn't make sense.

The other half is that ZombiU takes place in UK, which meant that Ubi's E3 games were about killing British and designed by the French devs. Silly, but it was there.

It's a part of history, what's the problem?
On the other hand it's a fictional take on our world, it's still a story there are heroes and villains and there's a bunch of 0s and 1s taking shape as grunt soldiers.
I had nothing against the Florentine guards in AC2 for instance but it didn't stop me attacking them for **** and giggles. Why? Because it's fun and it's a video game.

(I generally don't care about all this so I'm gonna stop here before I get worked up or something but that's basically my opinion. I'm not English but I am British)

Ubisoft has nothing against the British in Assassin's Creed

Postby Crow » 12 Jun 2012 18:56

...So uh...what?
why does anyone care?
Im not sure who I should be more annoyed with, the jerkoffs who find this offensive, or ubisoft for being cowards.

If an assassins creed game took place in Ireland, would they paint the british sympathetic during the bloody sunday massacre? would they apologize for including it in the game?

We killed the british in their sleep on christmas
we were brutal as hell, we fought a guerrilla war against a bunch of uptight redcoats playing like war was a turn based strategy game. Do you see anyone apologizing to americans after bringing that up?

You see every day in the news someone new blaming the ENTIRE country for the wars in the middle east, and nobody is apologizing for it.

Has anyone apologized to the japanese for making them the villains in WWII games? Or is it just because of the sick experiments they performed on POWs? Is there a rule? like you have to reach a certain amount of war crimes and acts of inhumanity to be disqualified for apologies?

and people are always talking about how awful the US is for the enola gay bombings, does that change anything?

If you find any of this offensive, please remove yourself from the internet, because youll never make it. I just hope there isnt some ham handed twist ending where this whole time the british were the good guys, because god forbid those supposedly sensitive people get their feelings hurt over something that happened more than 200 years ago.

@brianxbang
Interestingly, its noah webster's fault if I recall. He wanted to create an american language to seperate us further from the british, when people say they speak "american" and not "English"...they are actually right. Not that anybody ever seems to call it "american english"

I don't know a thing about the civil war, except for whoever's whining about this has some serious double-standards considering you never hear about these things in games where you're killing people from the Far-East or Russia or Germany.

...Plus, the movie Austin Powers probably portrayed us far worse than a video game about a real war ever could. If I want an apology for ANYTHING, it's that.

People are both overly sensitive to things that aren't at all racist, and it's also due to a certain level of naiveté, because the headline itself suggests you're very confused.

The guy at Ubisoft is right. Everyone was British back then, because the colonies were populated primarily by British people. No one was "American", because there was no America. So the only way you'd think the British would have a problem with this is if you weren't aware that everyone back then was British.

Ubisoft has nothing against the British in Assassin's Creed

Postby Soler » 12 Jun 2012 19:40

What irks me is not that the main character is fighting against the British Army: what irks me is that the main character is a NATIVE AMERICAN fighting against the British Army, when everything I've read indicates that Native Americans hated the colonists and supported the Crown.

It's a bit like Ubisoft thought, "Well, we can't have the PROTAGONIST fight on the side of the Empire, because the Empire is always evil and vive la révolution and all that."

And by the way, I'm Irish.

The Native Americans weren't entirely unified or anything. I've never gotten the impression that there was much consensus between the tribes. I imagine they picked sides (or abstained from) on a case by case basis.

That wasn't even necessarily true. It wasn't' a "British Civil War". There were hardly just British colonists. There were Spanish, French, Dutch, Irish, Scottish, German, etc. etc. etc. etc. There were all kinds of people who came to this land.

Whether they should have or not, and how they handled themselves here, especially as concerned to the native people who had lived here for thousands of years, is another story. But let's get the facts straight. It was NOT "British vs. British".

@deuxhero

So does the fact that they are french make them brit haters? Or america haters? Or history revisionists? Not sure what you imply there.

And it was indeed a British civil war. There is no other way to look at it. The fact that they were immigrants doesn't change anything to that. Brits had a ton of immigrants too. Especially at war as there are usually a good number of them in the army like it's always been the case. And they are an island you know. And a small one. They have always been a commercial and cultural crossroads. Just like you guys.

These people in america who declared war to the crown were british by right, payed taxes to the british crown, etc... And again if you think birth has anything to do with nationality, you can think again.

@thorn-rock

Ummmm....you DO realize that's incorrect, right? There were NOT just British people in the colonies. There were many Dutch, French, German, etc., as I already pointed out. It was ALREADY becoming a "melting pot", though that wasn't working out so well intitially. The point is, it was NOT just British citizens in the colonies fighting against the Red Coats. So no......it was NOT a "British Civil War". Britain had plenty of those, on it's own soil....making them ACTUAL "Civil Wars". Just saying.
