GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

As you say, it is not mandatory, so I did not buy one because Nintendo peripherals die really quickly.

I will, however, be enraged if I am forced to buy one if a redesign has a 2nd one built in.

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

@Alleyway
Flawed argument, you're using yourself as a reason the Circle Pad Pro is OK (you don't use the 3DS outside = nobody is gonna use it).

The 3DS is SUPPOSED to go outside. Remember StreetPass?...

on-topic: No opinion. Certainly not compelled to buy it, though.

I'm not planning to buy a CPP, for 3 reasons:

1. I don't have any games right now that use it.

2. I have an aversion to big clunky add-ons that spoil a device's design.

3. In the event a redesign is released with dual analogs, I'll probably sell my 3DS and upgrade. I got my current system cheap, so I shouldn't lose much in doing so.

I'm holding out as long as I can because I have a battery pack and I don't want to have to choose between the two. Having a better battery life and a second circle pad would have been ideal from the beginning and seems like a no-brainer. There are things that can be done without a second circle pad and keeping it in just for tradition, isn't a great reason, but not everything is ideal controlling with other methods and just being able to have the option is best.

There are pros and cons for every control scheme. Stylus controls can work perfectly fine for me, the downside is holding the whole system in one hand and losing easy access to pretty much all the buttons except L. And it doesn't effect me personally but left handed gamers got the shaft in that regard.

While a second analog control is familiar, it lacks precision. I've always thought it wasn't ideal and really I'm thoroughly enjoying using gyro controls provided I have enough space. The precision is nice and being able to quickly and accurately swing around to shoot someone is very satisfying. Playing the MGS demo though really made me realize how 3rd person games would be a total pain to control the camera without analog control. Buttons went out with the N64 for a reason. A touch screen could make for a less than ideal alternative but gyro wouldn't help. Recentering with a button ala the Wii remote method is okay, I've actually gotten very used to playing games like this and find myself using recentering on other consoles when available, but sometimes I just want to quickly and accurately swing the camera around to look around a corner or to spot an enemy that is just out of my view. A second analog might not have a lot of use in general play but until a method comes along that is better for camera control, it should stay.

Nintendo didn't try to keep it off the Wii U because the Wii remote and Nunchuk only used one analog. The Wii U tablet has basically all the same inputs as the 3ds minus a couple shoulder buttons but they didn't assume people could use the touch screen or gyro controls for games. Seems to me whatever it was that kept them from putting it into the 3ds was a big miscalculation and something that they must have realized for the Wii U but still decided against it.

I'll probably get one eventually but I'm not really looking forward to getting one.

Oh gawd, whoever uses it in travelling can just take it off and play something other than a shooter. It's not like the 3DS is swamped with them.

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

Personally I have a CPP and love it. I am an adult that uses his 3DS for breaks at work (Manager of Information Systems). So when lunch rolls around it is 3DS time. Since I always have my backback with me (for bringing my Laptop to and fro) there isn't an issue of bulk. Both games make it easy to pop in on and off and not lose settings.

To the few swearing there will be a redesign with the 2nd analog..I don't think there will be. There isn't a way to put a second analog in without making the system noticeably harder to hold. Also, where would you put the required triggers (for games that support the CPP). The system is a perfect size and the reason I selected it over the Vita for now (that and the Vita nubs are awwwwful). Even on that system they only have one set of shoulder buttons.

Just my 2 cents.

Hmm. I just realized my last post made me sound as though I'm not really happy with 3DS because I need the system to have integrated dual analog controls. In reality, that's not true, I really don't need it to have that kind of control scheme at all, and I think dual analog controls are begging for some kind of replacement. I do want to see a redesign since the system has numerous flaws as-is, but dual analogs wouldn't necessarily have to be included if they could just fix the lack of good camera control in some other way. I believe touchscreen camera controls could work fine as a substitute, if only the touchscreen had used a different kind of tech that allowed accurate tracking of a finger, but as it is, it can only reliably detect taps. I also think headtracking using the built-in camera could work well for camera control, but developers don't seem interested in that, and it would be directly at odds with the stereoscopic 3D feature of 3DS. That's not a big deal for me, since I almost never use the 3D feature any more, but it makes it a lot less likely to happen.

GoNintendo 'End of Day' thought - Did you buy a Circle Pad P

Postby The_King_of_Mars » 10 Mar 2012 15:09

I was a bit curious how much of a difference (if any) the Circle Pad Pro would make on playing Resident Evil: Revelations.
After placing my order through Nintendo's online shop, I met up with a few friends who were lucky (and smart enough) to buy a Circle Pad Pro from GameStop as soon as they went on sale. They couldn't stop talking about how much better the actual gameplay is with the device. I was extremely skeptical that it could, but after I had a chance to play RAID mode with it, I was sold.

I can never play RE: Revelations without the peripheral again. It is THAT good.

I have yet to pick it up myself, but I will definitely consider it in the next few weeks. I'd like to replay RE: Revelations in hell mode with it, to see the differences.

I wasn't very into the idea initially, but the fact is that most 3DS just don't NEED it, while some could certainly benefit from it. Resident Evil Revelations works fine without it, but I'm totally interested in playing it when I get my CCP.

Kid Icarus Uprising doesn't sound appealing if I have to play a crazy action game like that with the stylus AND controller, but the CCP could be the option that makes that game feel good for me.
