Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U controller obsolete?

Am I the only one that thinks these claims are absolutely ridiculous? I watched Microsoft's press conference. I like the idea of SmartGlass...but I never thought it would 'kill' the Wii U.

The Wii U and its GamePad are meant to be together. They are forever linked as the main focus of the platform. SmartGlass is an added bonus that developers will have to support. Hasn't anyone thought that perhaps Wii U devs will go with Wii U first and then port some of those ideas to SmartGlass instead of just making for SmartGlass and ignoring Wii U?

What about the fact that third parties have no idea what kinds of phones or tablets their consumers have when making a game...but if they make a game for Wii U, they know for sure that the GamePad is there.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby WesFX » 04 Jun 2012 20:56

At best, the penetration of SmartGlass will be as deep as something like Kinect. If every system doesn't come with it, not every owner will use it.

No. The Wii U Tablet is designed to work in tandem with the Wii U console. Smartglass is an app that is at the mercy of the device it is attached to.

This renders the Wii U controller obsolete about as much as Six-Axis did to WiiMote.
We're going to rack up some serious Nintendogs trainer points together!

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

I don't see how adding a little extra info on your tablet or smartphone exactly makes it revolutionary.

The Wii U and Smartglass are different, yet similar the way I see it.

Wii U and Smartglass both allow you to see extra details for the games you are playing, maps, info, etc.

Wii U however allows you to truly interact in real time with people, the game, and the extra stuff.

I've been looking into Smartglass, and whilst yes its a nice addition, I honestly, without sounding too much of a fanboy, don't think it's comparable to the Wii U's gamepad in terms of what it can actually achieve on and off games
Considering I've been playing Video Games since I was 3 years old, I'm still pretty terrible at them

PSVita is already proof that this concept just can't work with two seperate devices.

This is just more anti-Nintendo bias. It's amazing how much analysts and so-called journalists continuously dump on the company that basically saved the video game industry back in the day, and the only one still trying to innovate and bring new experiences to more and more people.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby AtomicBean » 04 Jun 2012 21:16

I don't get the excitement over this. It uses existing tablets and phones for input, which last I heard people hated as a primary means of control.

That said I don't see how anyone could see this as a Wii U killer.

What--you're expecting that coverage of this E3 is going to be about games? Perhaps enthusiasts celebrating the new product announcements from a gaming pioneer?

Of course not. This is all you're getting.

No, 'cause from what I understood, they want to shoehorn tablets/smartphones on the 360.

Read something similar on Pocket Lint.
Basically tech heads are stuck on their smart phones.
Personally, there appears o be market disconnect between what the journalists want and what the people want.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Having to use a separately-purchased tablet that may or may not be optimized for the application is not really the same thing as the Wii U gamepad.

Don't have a smartphone or tablet, so smartglass would be useless to me.
