Music Quiz Q&A

Postby Luigi III » 20 Apr 2007 18:29

1. Where do I submit songs for the music quiz?

2. Does the song need to be from a Nintendo game, or just a game on a Nintendo system?

I JUST saw this thread. MalikHalo is ON TOP of things!
He's right about everything so far, but I'll re-cap again and throw in one or two more things.

1. gonickyhill@gmail.com is the place to send the submissions.

2. mp3's and wav's can be acceptable. Wav's are bigger and sometimes a little harder to get off of Gmail (if there are issues on Gmail's end) but I can still work with them. If you do end up sending in a different sort of file, make sure to send directions as to how I can open it with Winamp. I'm not always computer savy.

3. Major restrictions:
a)Songs should be from a Nintendo System. Catalogue includes
Nes, Snes, N64, GameCube, Wii,
Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, DS,
Virtual Boy AND games currently on the Virtual Console.

If they have only been announced or rumored to come to the Virtual Console, they can not be used.
b) no midi files
c) no remixes of songs

4. Send in as many songs as you want. All the songs get saved in an archive I have set-up. If you send in more than one song from the same game, I won't play them together on the same podcast unless there I see fit. It's nothing personal, just trying to fit in more people in the time we have to do it.

5. When sending the e-mail make sure these are somewhere in there:
a) Screen name you want to be credited as.
b) The name of the game the song came from.
c) The platform it was released on.
d) The song file. (this can be sent as an attachment or a link to a site for me to download. If you want to send in a bunch of songs at once, the best way may be to archive them and send them as a bundle.

5. As far as where to get songs, there are a lot of ways. There are a lot of sites to download files. Many people use http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks.php
Just make sure you are not downloading or looking through the midi files.
Another thing that some people have done recently were output audio from their televisions to their comupters and record the music that way. People also take from actual game soundtrack discs. A lot of soundtrack compilations are available, and most of them are really worth the buy anyway. I don't think all emulators use the exact same music from the games, so I might have to not allow that. As time goes on, maybe that will be lifted.

All people who have submitted, please share the sites you use or your approach to the game section. And as time continues, I may change the rules.

Hope this all helps for you.

Did you read rule #2? It says mp3's and wav's......if you just gave it to him from YouTube, he would have no way of playing it on the show....

What you *could* do is go to http://www.listentoyoutube.com. Copy/paste the youtube link in there, and it spits out an MP3 for you. Now the quality isn't tremendous, but I'm sure it would be fine for the purposes of the show.

I haven't heard one of my submissions in a while. Did you get the ones I sent on September 16?

Hopefully reviving this thread isn't a problem, but I have a question/concern about it, and this was the best/first thread I saw on it..

It's just that it's one of my favorite parts of the end of the podcasts, but I've been noticing that on the last couple shows, the crew doesn't seem to be as interested in the music-quiz...they like having it, but if they don't know it, they just seem like 'oh well, whatever, don't know it, don't care'. It's just that... I was wanting to submit some awesome/nostalgic music that I've always liked, but now I wonder. Do they prefer songs that are challenging and that might be answerable, or do they want us to send in Super Mario Bros. 1 Overworld every week? It's obvious that if we send in the most obscure game music ever no one will be able to answer and they won't enjoy it, but without a list of games they own, what else can we do except send in music for "games that just released" or even "obvious games everyone played and are very easy to answer".

My main interest in possibly gathering and recording some game-music to submit would be like, 'I really liked this music from all the times I'd play the games they're from, but I think it'd be challenging to guess at, and maybe they'd appreciate how good it is too'. But more and more it seems like they either know it or don't know it, and brush it off and move onto the next.

So I guess what I'm asking is 'should I challenge them with songs they probably won't know, because I liked them and I think they'd like them too', or should I just submit the same Mario-related or pop-culture-related game music and hear them get it right on the first try? All the song ideas I have now ARE Nintendo related, but it just seems like there are so many game songs out there that it's hard to know which direction to take it...

obscure or not, i think people are more interested in good songs than anything a pushover or impossible answer.
