Let's criticize a game!

Tired of talking about video games? In here you can talk up ANYTHING else going on in the world or beyond...

Let's criticize a game!

Postby TheLastBlade » 29 May 2012 00:52

*Please people, respect other peoples opinions. To show this: this will be the ONLY post I will make for this topic*

Was there a time where a game pissed you off because of certain flaws? Let it all out in this post.

2 games come in mind:

1. Sonic Generations: I enjoyed this game.... Too bad it was plagued with junk that was present since Sonic Unleashed.
-Speed Boosts: I view these as a cancer that is mandatory for every sonic games apparently... I hate these with a passion. Not because it's too fast, but because I want to get through a level that will reward me with speed, platforming, and execution... Not with, finishing to get an S rank, hitting walls, and have to worry about objects.
-2.5D segments: Ok I'll say it right here... I DESPISE 2.5D segments in Modern Sonic. Having fun with the 3D parts? Reminds you of the good old adventure time(get it)? TOO BAD! You have to switch control styles just to get through to these messes! .... REALLY SEGA? If people didn't like these things in 3D, then WHY would you do it AGAIN?
-Difficulty: Ok I'm not good at hard games... But I know when death traps don't make sense. "Hey you're on a platform that switches up and down and be careful! You either get spiked or fall into a pit!" *This is worse in 2.5D segments*
-RPG elements: ....

2. Kid Icarus: It's nice to know that this made it into everyone's personal favorites list or favorite game of all time. It's not mines though.
-Controls: Yeah, I said it. THE CONTROLS ARE HORRIBLE. It's nice to know that you got used to it, but to the majority of people that can't stand unorthodox control scheme, it comes off as a mixed bag. Yes, I am aware the this comes with a stand, but guys, I thought this was a handheld console. To normal people, looking into the touch screen, having 3D on, and look at the other screen is a bad idea.
-Useless Shop system: Seriously? Am I the only one in the world that is PISSED OFF on how the shop is terrible? Palutena: "Pit, this is shop where you redeem your hearts for weapons! Don't get too excited though, as these are VERY expensive! Oh hey, you got a Rank 1 in both Range and Melee! For 200,000 heart points! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOSER!" Seriously Sakurai? Is this your F***ed up idea of rewarding the player? Apparently, everyone is too busy fusing their weapons to noticed how bad this thing is! GAWD!!! I haven't seen a bad shop system since Mass Effect 2!

So those are my games that I enjoy, but with flaws that bother me. So what are games that are either bad or good that has flaws that bother you?
Bang.

See you, Space Cowboy...

The only game that comes to mind (right now) is Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. I don't know how many people have played it, but anyone who has played it knows that the dialog is gaaawwd awful long. The writing isn't too bad, but if you keep reading paragraphs long of story and info that doesn't even help you on your quest, it gets a little irritating. Plus the puzzles get repetitive and easy since they all go along the lines of the abilities of the characters you have. As long as you can get by those 2 things it's playable. That's all I have to say about that game.

From this point forward, all discussion of Metroid: Other M is prohibited under penalty

Seriously though, we're just tired of this game coming up, it seems like the thread was made for it, and we're cutting off discussion at the bud.

If I really had to criticize a game, it would be Children of Mana, I got that game almost a year ago, and I don't know what to do/get after the 2nd dungeon/temple/whatever they are since the game didn't give me proper explanation of what to do next. Should I give up on that game?

Just one question (out of curiosity), does New Super Mario Bros. discussion threads get as heated as those for Other M?

Final Fantasy XII: While I certainly don't hate the game, it's probably my least favorite main Final Fantasy game (yes that means I liked XIII more, deal with it [hey at least I actually beat XIII, I have yet to beat XII because I get so bored with it]). Why? The game has the exact opposite problem compared to XIII, it's just too open with barely anything to do. That's one thing I kinda hate in wide open games in general: having big places to explore that are just bland. No More Heroes 1 had Santa Destroy, and you'd think it'd be awesome to explore a big city on a pimped out motorcycle right? Wrong. The city is just so bland and boring that I was glad that they removed free roaming from NMH2 and replaced with with an instant travel menu. At least games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout give you big places that are interesting to explore with lots of places and secrets to discover, but NMH1 and FFXII just did it the wrong way. I at least took the time to beat NMH1 because of how crazy awesome the rest of the game is, but I still have yet to beat FFXII because I get so bored walking around all the time with hardly anything to do.

Old video games in general: Now I know some of you out there are probably gonna moan at me (especially if you're a part of a "certain" crowd) but I have a hard time getting into a lot of old 8-bit games (and even some 16-bit ones) for one reason: the difficulty is just cheap as all hell. This is coming from someone who's actually beaten all six of the NES Mega Man games, so I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about. Games like the entire NES trilogy of Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania games, for example, are just so damn cheap in the ways they kill you. Do I still like the games? Sure, when they're not kicking my ass in stupid ways. This is why I hate it when those "certain" gamers wish games would go back to the difficulty of old 8-bit games, and why I'm reluctant to try games like Dark Souls. One reason I'm reluctant because it feels like at least half of Dark Souls' fanbase is full of those "certain" gamers who are masochists that like games to be hard for the sake of being hard, and not giving the player a fair challenge. (to elaborate, I'm talking about those jerkwads who criticize you for playing any difficulty below "extreme" and will bi**h at you for saying you think games like Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania are hard)

I think that's all I have for now.

where to begin

Elder scrolls V skyrim:
walk, talk, walk, talk, walk, talk, fight enemy, walk, talk, walk, talk GOOD LORD THIS IS SO EFFING BORING. The dungeon design is an absolute joke, do you remember those corridors in metroid prime linking certain rooms together? Well the dungeons in this god awful game are basically very long versions of those corridors, they're narrow, linear, and it's just moving forward and killing everything your way. The main quest so far (I'm about 2 hours in and am in no hurry to return) consists of about 70% walking, 20% fighting and 10% talking. There was an interesting part of the main quest where you had to sneak into some room then sneak past some guards which actually made me think "OMG THIS CRAP HAS A BIT OF VARIETY!? GEEZ, DON'T OVERWORK YOUR STAFF BETHESDA." the story is also pretty lame, or at least told in a lame way. It's just talking to people and them telling you what happened and what's going on rather showing much, perfect example of "show, don't tell". The first bloody hour of this shovel revolves around travelling to every mother effing town in the whole bloody map (which is almost as big as great britain but even emptier than wind wakers ocean) talking to people just so you can hear them say "OH MY GOD! YOU REALLY ARE A DRAGONBORN!"
How this shovel won game of the year I do not know.

Sonic Colours:
This game sucks, fact. Whether or not you've noticed this yet isn''t relevant, because in a few years when you replay it, you'll notice it's the most broken down awful 2D sonic game yet (a sonic game that's 80% 2D and 20% 3D counts as a 2D sonic game in my book). Godawful physics, painful cutscenes, disgustingly crap boss fights, 3D sections are 80% on rails, most of the powerups suck, the controls are broken (try double jumping with an enemy close by and sonic will fly across the screen and probably miss the platform you were aiming for since the idiots insisted on making the game support wiimote only controls and had to make the jump and attack buttons the same exact effing button) and the level design is just flat out shovel. those darn levels where you have to travel using that damn floating spring which moves so slow it's painful, those levels where you are forced to watch sonic running around mindlessly for about 45 seconds before you actually get to do anything, those endless "3D" sections where there are 3 lanes and you just have to move from lane to lane to dodge the enemy attacks which seem to last forever. I can go on for hours but I'll stop there, and when the time finally comes and you realise that you were wrong about sonic colours and that it is a load of crap with almost nothing going for it, just remember that I told you so :)

Assassins creed 2:
jesus christ this game EFFING SUCKS! Walk beside woman at an incredibly slow pace whilst she moans about her pathetic life, carry box from point A to B, walk from point A to B (oh and the effing markers are removed if you're being chased just to waste even more time), is this a game or an effing time waster? Yes I know the box moving and walking alongside woman at an incredibly slow pace were just the beginning, but even after that there's just so much faffing about and time wasting.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 , Super Mario 3D Land: I hate how they're all so fricken linear. What I discovered when I replayed Super Mario Galaxy 1 for my first time was how linear this game was from the older games. I was always put on a set course to the star, never given the option to explore and choose my own path, or own star to go after. After completing it not once, twice, or three times, but four times (*Counting Luigi's*) I found myself bored to tears  of this game. I didn't find Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land as boring (*I'm not going to even dare to replay them since I'm in fear of experiencing the boredom once more*) but they do lack the exploration aspect I so loved from Super Mario 64 and Sunshine. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land when I play them and look back at past levels world/galaxys don't seem to offer much in my eyes. I see nothing more to them. In a matter of minutes I know where everything is. There was never any fun exploring that could be done like in the past games. All this saddens me and annoys the hell out of me to be honest.

Of course it was. This is the second thread Last Blade started on the subject of "Do certain Fanboy/girls piss you off?" & now "Let's criticize a game!" since his name calling caused the Other M thread to be shut down a couple days ago. IMO he needs a time out.

As for a game to crit, any Sonic platformer. The game-play of Sonic games pale in comparison to almost every other 2D platformer. People ask for Sega to return to the old school magic, imo that magic was never there. I own the Sonic Mega Collection on Cube and have played all of the classic entries, they aren't so hot, in my opinion of course.

Let's talk about Mario & Luigi Partners in Time and talk about its way-too-complex battle system (I mean 4 people? Really?), broken hammer attack/dodge (seriously, WTF am I supposed to do? Just press the button? Where's the strategy in that?), its SHORT length (roughly half the length of SS... really?), stupid story (aliens... how original), ZERO exploration (a castle? This isn't SM64), lack of Bros. Moves (Bros. items don't count... YOU HAVE TO BUY THEM. It's like DLC, except with in-game currency) CRAPLOADS OF GRINDING (I didn't even have to grind in SS!), enemies that look more-or-less EXACTLY THE SAME (shroobs, more shroobs, even more shroobs...), dark NOTHINGNESS in levels, no towns whatsoever (the few towns you visit are in ruins), and... this is the biggest... WORST FINAL BOSS IN THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES. You know why? Because....
Spoiler:
what, there are actually 4 FINAL BOSSES, and the last one can ONLY BE KILLED BY USING AN ITEM? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? YOU HAVE TO USE A FREAKING ITEM TO DESTROY THE FINAL BOSS? THAT'S NOT WHAT FINAL BOSSES ARE FOR! And what? A minigame after the final boss which is actually the final final boss? IS THAT REALLY NECESSARY? Well... at least I can relax and watch the good I've done to this world... wait... I saved this world, right? THEN WHY THE HELL CAN I NOT GO BACK AND SEE ALL THOSE SAD SAD TOWNS ALL HAPPY AND STUFF? WHAT? YOU WANT ME TO GO BACK TO THE FINAL BOSS SO I CAN EXPERIENCE IT AGAIN? DO YOU THINK I WANT TO EXPERIENCE THAT GOD DAMN THING AGAIN? Sheesh.

Mario& Luigi Superstar Saga:

Okay, I really like this game. But there are a few small things that really annoy me. So, there's this one theme that plays a few times in the game, at least twice, both time Beanbean Castle Town is destroyed (You can hear it here). I swear it is the most annoying and bland music I've ever heard in a Nintendo game. Secondly, while fun there's no real challenge in the game. By the tome I got to Bowletta, I could take him...her....it, down in 2 or 3 BROS. Moves, and that was accounting for her mini-tranformation. The true final battle is a bit more challenging, but really only because you start out with 1 HP.

Every Call of Duty game:

CoDs 1-3: World War II over and over...

CoD 4: MW: Holy hell awesome!
Basically 5 more games that were almost the exact same game as CoD 4...crap.

Mass Effect 3/series: Crappy ending, the bad design choices are VERY obvious in hindsight and did I mention the shovel - and I mean shovel that you wish you could use to bury this game with - ending?

Other M...I kid. :P

New Super Mario Bros (series):

Okay, this series has probably the most bland art style of any Nintendo game. I could put up with it somewhat on the DS due to it's limitations, but then I saw very little improvement minus the smoothing out of models and I was like 'The hell?'. The multiplayer was decent fun, but the art style combined with unimpressive music left a bad taste in my mouth. Nintendo has shown to be averse to making things in thhe way they once did. Just look at how crappily treated 2D Mario is treated relative to it's 3D brethren: Doesn't get orchestrated music, boring art, quick dev time and, lack of charm.

Super Smash Bros. Melee:

Even though I was a tournament player, this game has several annoying things. First and foremost- the UNBEARABLE hitstun. If you get hit at about 90% damage by a Smash Attack, it's over, no if-ands-or-buts. Then there's the balancing issue. The characters that dominated were Marth, Fox and Falco due to their cheapness and OPness. Fox's Up Smash was particularly annoying, as was his Reflector. And God, so MANY clone characters...

Those are the main ones, or at least the first ones. May do some more tomorrow. Need some sleep. xD

Well, to tell you the truth, I didn't exactly HATE Partners in Time. I had some fun with it, despite its many frustrating moments. The game isn't broken in any way, just poorly designed in some areas. It was an okay game. Could have been worse, I guess :P

Brawl- Balance stinks, and because the game still makes a failed attempt at being balanced, it is not even entertainingly unbalanced. The physics are way too floaty. Characters move like they are swimming through taffy. The character roster still feels anemic. Tripping is stupid. All potential for high-level techniques has been removed because Sakurai is afraid of the imaginary problem of tournament players persecuting 8 year-olds or whatever. Online play is bare-bones and filled with lag/getting dropped randomly. And Subspace Emissary mode is a ten-hour long platformer using characters that are not actually designed for platforming (and what platforming there is is dumbed down so that even the heaviest and least mobile characters can play through every stage) with ugly-enemies and levels and huge dopey cutscenes that necessitated the ridiculous load times of dual-layer disks and last level literally made from the recycled bits of alllllll the other levels put in at the end to pad things out even more. A glitch cost me all my Brawl data after completing it, and I had to resort to following FAQs in order to find alternative requirements for re-unlocking all the characters because there was no way in hell I was going to go through SSE all over again.

FAILURE.
