Katawa Shoujo

It's a japanese bishoujo-style visual novel, essentially a coming of age story, and it has some light interactions to it (think the old choose your own adventure books). It is very well written and some parts actually choked me up a bit, it was created by an international team of amateur writers, programmers, and artists.

A warning, for anyone looking to try it. It has nudity and sexual situations. They are handled very tastefully though and the adult content can be disabled. It's no worse than a movie or anime with a sexual scene in it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was almost brought to tears a few times over fictional characters. I went into it thinking it was a game and was a little dissapointed in the lack of interaction in all but key areas. Once I got over that I was pulled into an amazing heart wrenching story I encourage anyone whose old enough to check it out.

Hisao Nakai, a normal boy living a normal life, has his life turned upside down when a congenital heart defect forces him to move to a new school after a long hospitalization. Despite his difficulties, Hisao is able to find friends—and perhaps love, if he plays his cards right. There are five main paths corresponding to the 5 main female characters, each path following the storyline pertaining to that character.

The story is told through the perspective of the main character, using a first person narrative. The game uses a traditional text and sprite-based visual novel model with an ADV text box.

also it's free and on pc did I mention that?

I really wouldn't consider it Japanese, since it was made by an international dev team.

The game really is awesome though. Its one of the best visual Novel's I've ever played, and I've been looking forward to it ever since I played the demo about a year ago.

Emi's route is probably my favorite and seems to be the arc with the best writing. The fact that I had a relationship just like the one she and Hisao had definitely made it the most emotional one for me.
