pending any concrete news, i have a feeling this topic is nearing the end of its discussability.
NSMBW is a 2D game though. It uses 3D graphics, but it's a 2D side-scroller. I would never count that.
Not to mention, it's a sequel to a handheld game and is technically part of a continuation based on the original 4 games.

Yoshi's Island is a special case. It's two different things:
1. Super Mario Bros. 4 Episode II
2. Yoshi's Island 1
And Yoshi's Island goes on to spawn its own series. Likewise, Super Mario Land comes to this problem with the Wario Land series which spawns in the middle of the Super Mario Land games.

Personally, I always viewed Galaxy 1 and 2 as the same game. I mean, it technically is. It's a glorified expansion, like Half-Life 2's Episodes. Galaxy 2 is basically what could have been a whole disc worth of DLC for Galaxy, if that were an option.
Doesn't make it any less amazing. I love Galaxy 2, but to me, it's just an expansion of Galaxy.
If you asked me to list off the 3D console Mario titles, I'd say Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxies. I would not be surprised by a Wii U game being considered the "4th" console/3D Mario.
But that's just me.
