Super Mario 4?

Postby BasementofNerds » 09 Apr 2012 16:32

I keep hearing about this rumor and people keep saying it will be the New Super Mario Bros. 3DS game, but I personally think it will be a Wii U game I mean think about it.

1. Super Mario 64
2. super Mario Sunshine
3. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
4. Super Mario 4

Makes sense to me. What do you guys think it will be on 3DS or Wii U?

Sounds good but isn't the number 4 unlucky in Japanese superstitions? But I guess it's going to be down to the way the next side-scrolling Mario looks, if it's like the 'New' series then you can expect them keeping the name but I believe we will see the kind of style that we had in Super Mario 3D Land minus the 3D.

I fail to see any pattern except for Galaxy 1 followed by Galaxy 2.

On the other hand this makes sense:

1. Super Mario Bros
2. Super Mario Bros 2
3. Super Mario Bros 3
4. Super Mario World (Super Mario Bros 4 in Japan) already exists... :P

So, if there are rumors of a Super Mario Bros 4 game then I think it will be New Super Mario World for 3DS, which would explain why some people are saying it is the 4th. I don't think I have heard anything about a Wii U Mario game besides the one with Miis.

yeah.. 4 has the same pronunciation as death, so maybe.

but perhaps it'll be super mario 4D land, and be a persistent online world happening in real time. or not.

i don't know how that list managed to come into existence, but it seems to have forgotten all of the pre-n64 mario games, as well as the 'New' title on wii (which was still 3d, just not third person, behind, in case that's what the numbered list in the OP is referring to).

Super Mario World is actually called "Super Mario Bros. 4" in Japan. So, this is not a thing.

it's only bad luck if you use the japanese pronunciation or characters, the use of the arabic numeral '4' or the english 'four' are not considered bad luck.

and yea, smb4 is super mario world.

Image

since they used the numeral '4' there is no bad luck.

Just a wishful guess, but remember what Capcom did on the VC with Megaman 9 & 10? That was them picking up a retired series, pretending the last 15 years didn't happen, now imagine if Nintendo broke out an old NES dev kit and made a new downloadable NES VC title. They could even put it on all 4 platforms, Wii, Wii U, DSi and 3DS, now wouldn't that be cool.

Sega kind of did the same thing with Sonic 4, but they used a new engine.

I'm not talking in a squeal sense, I'm talking a series sense, this will be the 4th series of a 3D console Mario game, so I think that's what it means by Super Mario 4, I mean all the games have been called Super Mario. It's not the Super Mario Bros. series I think they're talking about, its the Super Mario series they're talking about. (Two different series haha)

Okay, but that would be kind of messed up if they did that. They would be saying that "Yes, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are one game that we sold you one half at a time.". I'm still hopping for an NES VC title.

I personally feel like it would come out on the 3DS and the WiiU Mario game is going to be called Super Mario generations. and it will be like sonic generation except with all the Mario games.

except it's technically the 5th, since NSMBW was 3d.

pending any concrete news, i have a feeling this topic is nearing the end of its discussability.

Well how about turning the thread into 'what do you WANT in a 2D, so-called 'SMB4', ignoring the fact that SMW is technically SMB4 since we basically do the same for SML3:WL?' Me, I want the variety and uniqueness of power-ups and different worlds of SMB3 along with the secret exits and level design and overall exploitable game engine of SMW.

As much as I love SMB3, not being able to return to levels or worlds later is an annoyance, and there are very few 'secret exits', and fewer that make any sense comparable to the map. SMW on the other hand has some great level designs that match up a little better with what they looked like on the overworld map, and some of the secret exits kinda made sense, at least more than the very few that are in NSMBW anyway. The main problem I have with SMW is that the powerups lack variety and are less interesting to me, and that the different worlds are sometimes too similar to each other. It doesn't even have a proper ice or desert world... like Sunshine's all-tropical theme, it's almost all tropical/foresty/grassland themed. So basically I want the variety and uniqueness of SMB3 but the complexity, depth, and basic engine of SMW....and more or less nothing from the NSMB series.

NSMBW is a 2D game though. It uses 3D graphics, but it's a 2D side-scroller. I would never count that.

Not to mention, it's a sequel to a handheld game and is technically part of a continuation based on the original 4 games.

Mirr0rR3flection wrote:So would you say Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is Super Mario Bros. 5? o˛0?¿?

Yoshi's Island is a special case. It's two different things:

1. Super Mario Bros. 4 Episode II
2. Yoshi's Island 1

And Yoshi's Island goes on to spawn its own series. Likewise, Super Mario Land comes to this problem with the Wario Land series which spawns in the middle of the Super Mario Land games.

Personally, I always viewed Galaxy 1 and 2 as the same game. I mean, it technically is. It's a glorified expansion, like Half-Life 2's Episodes. Galaxy 2 is basically what could have been a whole disc worth of DLC for Galaxy, if that were an option.

Doesn't make it any less amazing. I love Galaxy 2, but to me, it's just an expansion of Galaxy.

If you asked me to list off the 3D console Mario titles, I'd say Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxies. I would not be surprised by a Wii U game being considered the "4th" console/3D Mario.

But that's just me.

yeah.. i think that pretty much speaks volumes as to why the OP's concept of a "super mario 4" and the reasoning behind it would never work. one person disqualifies a game for their own personal reasons, and someone else has totally different criteria. (which is why i don't disqualify NSMBW because of it's camera angle... the galaxy games had fixed, "2D" style areas too)

i don't have any problem with shifting the topic to a wishful thinking discussion, though i could swear we already have one. if i find it, things could get merged...

Oh now I see why. :?

To sell it by name association seems most plausible though I still believe it could have sold without the association.
