I was wondering if it's possible to charge an American iPod through a Japanese computer using the USB cable, or would it ruin it?

Not at all. I live in Brazil and my iPod is Chinese, but I have no problem charging or syncing it.

USB is USB. no difference based on where the computer came from (all the parts were made at foxconn anyway)
