Computer acting a little strange after internal dusting

Postby Eternal Rain » 07 Aug 2012 11:12

To start with, this is an older computer (kind of). It's a Compaq brand computer from 2004 that was bought at a Wal-Mart (still with with parents while going through college, and sadly they don't wanna replace this computer yet).

I don't know what could be wrong, I followed the directions as I should have, though now part of me is even surprised this computer is even working now. Anyway, it had been years since this computer was last dusted out. I took the computer to a well ventilated area, followed the instructions to open it up so I could see the inside, and went right ahead and dusted it out with a compressed air can. I tried to be as through as possible, but I am sure some dust got in places I couldn't see.

Anyway, when that as done I just hooked up the computer again, and for some reason the green power light flashed for a bit, yet acted like it was turning on, but there was nothing on screen. After about two or three minutes the computer finally started up proper. Now if that wasn't odd enough, my disc drive is being very finicky on when it wants to open (though I kid you not, as soon as I start typing this I test it again and suddenly it now decides it wants to work... I don't get this machine, I almost want to go Amish, lol).

There seems to now be a somewhat strange lag problem when on the internet now, but nothing too extreme. (I've done plenty of virus scans prior to the dusting and everything seems to be fine) Anyway, I just wanna know if this type of thing is supposed to be normal, like the computer is just still getting used to the fact it's now got much less dust on the inside, or did I mess something up? *hopes this thing doesn't crap out on me*

I should also note I don't remember how the computer acted the last time it was dusted out... yeah it's been that long.

Are you sure you didn't damage anything when you used the compress air? Some parts can be very delicate, especially the processor if you opened that up... Are you positive you hooked everything up correctly? If so, make sure there are no loose wires just to be sure. Also, is your hard drive making any weird sounds such as clicking noises? When your computer slows down does it go back to normal after a while, or stay slow? Does it freeze often? If all the parts are fine and working and it is still acting weird you may have gotten a virus without knowing it. Antivirus programs sometimes don't black certain things and sometimes miss them with a scan.

Anyways, it might be time for an upgrade imo. Eights years for a computer is fairly good. The parts get out dated much faster than that and you could probably find a better one spec wise for very cheap. It is hard to buy something today that is worse than a 2004 computer.
